Morning :)

Dennis and Tiger Lily are

Archie and Louis

Snow, how is Nog doing? I hope he's feeling a bit better.

Yay for Dakota being so good :)

It is truly miserable weather out there. Lots of the roads round us are flooded, which has made getting to work rather interesting. Kia is truly unimpressed and has gone into hibernation mode in an attempt to avoid getting wet. I dragged her out to agility training last night and she was super good - the first time in about 5 weeks that she's done any training, and she was a star. Logan was good too, but he always is. He would like to know why we aren't going down to the field to play ball very often. I've tried explaining that the field is a muddy lake and he comes back covered head to toe in mud, and then growls at me when I towel him off, but he doesn't see the problem. Apparently the walls, floors, and sofas will absorb the mud and it's all fine!

Good girl Dakota - Amber never had any formal training, and apart from a strong dislike of Border Collies, she is absolutely fine. I think so long as you know how to train a dog (I.e have done it before), and make sure she is socialised, you won't have any issues with her :)

That house is lovely Alex :)

Am at the hairdressers today - I fancy a change, but not sure what  Am sure my hairdresser is going to love me today

i think the puppy party is a really good idea, especially for people who haven't had a dog before, i had done all the stuff anyway she knew sit, lay, and i only went so she could muck about with the other puppies, i have been in touch with the lady who i saw laney with, she does ttouch and is a behavioral person, she does a one off 3 hour session to get you started which is much better for me.

Jazz, you have found some bargains!

I always train my dogs myself

I trained my dog dog to stand in front of me to steady me getting up, and all things like that, but cant do that with the tinies. none of these like to play fetch, so cant teach them to pick things up for me. ill try with the new one

i did get somewhat confused, i had told the lady dakota already knew sit, lay, paw and she had us all doing sit/lay, so i asked dakota to sit, she did, gave a treat, i asked her to lay and she didn't so no treat, i did this a few times...now i know my dog knows how to do it, i was told that i should wait for her to lay down then say lay errrrmmmm o.k how will i get her to do that then? telepathically perhaps Lol

Jazz, my diez was fabulous at helping me, she could get washing out of the machine, pick my keys up, and her favourite was if i spilt my black coffee she could clean it up lol

The only thing my two are good at is clearing the left over food..in Dylan's case, even when you didn't realise it was left over!

I'm rather bewildered as to why it's going to be compulsory for children to learn a foreign language when they reach seven..considering the number of teens who can't spell, punctuate or use correct grammar, isn't it more important for them to learn english properly first? One school is teaching them Mandarin, pretty useless considering that all Chinese children start learning english from a young age, and many chinese actually speak Cantonese, not Mandarin! edited to add...I mean children born and bred here should improve their english, not immigrants, before someone accuses me of racism!

i i asked her to lay and she didn't so no treat, i did this a few times...now i know my dog knows how to do it,

Lying down in a strange place with strnge dogd arouns makes a dog feel very vulnerable. I never insisted on new or nervous dogs lying down in my class until they were comfortable in the class.

i was told that i should wait for her to lay down then say lay errrrmmmm o.k how will i get her to do that then? telepathically perhaps Lol

I advised that method for dogs who resisted lying down., particularly big dogs or strong dogs. Wait until the dog lies down naturally- when it is tired after a walk or after playing etc- then go the dog and gently praise /reward WHILE THE DOG IS STILL LYING DOWN. Drop the treat between the front paws.

If you call thee dog to you or praise/reward after the dog gets up you are praising the dog for getting up, not lying down.

quite agree suzeanna, they should be able to read, write, add up and speak properly first... i can remember when my cousins went to school they were at primary school and got taught french, we had to wait until we went to secondary school to do that and then in the third year we got taught german too, now something like french and german i guess would be useful, likewise spanish as you often see jobs advertised here for IT help desks for speakers of french/german/spanish i don't recall ever seeing a request for manderin although i am sure somebody somewhere must want it

a piccie of my 2..... laney has decided he kind of likes the new pup.... i hope it lasts Lol

Alex that house has fabulous outside space. The dogs would love it! Can I book my room now for a weeks holiday?

When I win the lottery you and Archie can come for as long as you like :)

Griff - none of my dogs have ever had any 'formal' training but will sit, stay, come, etc cos I've trained them myself. I've also trained them to ignore livestock. I did ten mins at a time and now and then I do some refresher training to keep it up. They are in the middle of bullocks every weekend and aren't in the slightest bit interested. Thing about puppy parties is that dogs learn to socialise with puppies - I believe they should be socialised with dogs of all ages as older dogs will tell them off so they learn more.

I've had a horrendous day at work - I have made a rod for my own back by being too helpful and doing stuff which others should be taking ownership of, hence I'm the go to person when s*** goes wrong. Not as if I haven't got enough to do already. Since Monday I've found myself really stressed again :(

Panellists for Royal Mail survey wanted.

I'll come back to comment on some of the comments that have been posted but for now I just want to ask if there is anyone interested in joining a research panel where you send out and receive post and use a website to log the incoming items? You get a book of 12 first class stamps and a book of 4 first class large letter stamps for free every month. You do 6 months on and 6 months off. You also get the chance to participate in other types of postal checks for which you receive a £5 high street shops voucher. I usually end up with about £30 quid's worth which come in handy at Christmas.

If you work for or have family members working for R.M you can't do it - sorry! Please P.M me if interested and I will send you the details to apply. It will depend on whether they need more panellists in your area as to whether you get selected.

I hope this isn't against the site rules. It's just that I've been asked to pass on to any friends who might be interested and it can pay off for dog rescues as you might like to pass some of the stamps on to them. I send some to Eileen at Trailound Welfare from time to time and she's always glad of them.

Griff that's a lovely picture

I didn't take George to puppy classes or any sort of training as I didn't even know at the time that they even existed! I did make some mistakes but nothing that turned anything into a problem. I basically employed positive reward methods. It helped that George was so devoted to me that he was very keen to please me and picked up almost everything I taught him pretty quickly. The kids used to love that he could do a "high five" or would offer a paw when asked to "gimme five" .

By the time Archie came along I was much more au fait with modern training methods and classes. I booked him into puppy classes with a dog behaviorist that I had seen work with a badly abused German Shepherd with great results. Ruby took Archie to the classes so she could bond with him. Everything was fine except that at the end of the class the D.B asked for them all to be let of their leads to engage in some play. Archie was the littlest pup there and some of the others proved too much for him, jumping on him and crowding him. He was imprinted with a life long hatred of puppies from that!

As I have mentioned before Arch was the nortiest pup on the planet and would have grown up to be a holy terror had he got in the wrong hands. He was again enrolled into classes with a different trainer after he had grown a little. The trainer was running the Kennel club's good citizen dog scheme. This course was the making of him and I cannot speak too highly of them. They completely turned him around. As you all know I often brag about how our DW's compliment his behaviour and frequently say they is the best trained dog they have on their books. I often think that he should have gone to be a service dog so he had a job to do because I think he would have loved that.

Thanks for the offer of stay at your lottery house Alex :flowers: I know it's easy to say but a lot harder to do but do try and not get so stressed. Have you ever tried meditating? It seems to help Ruby.

Suzeanna I agree with you about the kids and the new requirement for them to start learning another language when many of our teenagers can't write or speak proper English.
