So glad its not cancer. And that treatment has been started. It sounds similar to what Cleo has and she is responding really well to treatment, so fingers crossed its the same for him.

The steroids do hit them hard, and its been a case of things getting worse before getting better. But as the steroids have been reduced (very slowly) the real Cleo is coming back!!

Murf hadn't picked up any over the weekend, and went back to my vet this morning as he needed a blood sample taken for the specialist. Our vet checked it on the spot and the red blood cell count is so low he is now critical and needs an immediate blood transfusion to buy the vets time to try and find out what is going on :mecry:

I hope I am doing the right thing it doesn't feel right to give up now, but Murf is so very tired :( I am told this is due to the anemia and he is not in pain. They have discovered that the red blood cells are being killed off within the bone marrow not in the blood but as yet they don't know why, if they can find out why there is a chance it can be treated, but how long can I hold onto that hope without him suffering :mecry:

Max was in exactly the same situation and had to have several blood transfusions. They made a world of difference to him - he was positively bouncing about for about 10 days afterwards. Hopefully it will be the same for Murf, cos he won't be anaemic (temporarily) any more :flowers::GroupHug: If the vet can crossmatch the blood then even better.

Clare my mother has to have transfusions every now and again as her body cannot store or tolerate iron so she gets dreadfully tired and down when shes anaemic but within hours of a transfusion she is feeling much much better and back to normal hopefully that will be the same for Murf :flowers:

Thanks for your good wishes :flowers:

The transfusion went well, we went to pick him up last night as my vet thought the best place for him was at home, he went through all the things we needed to watch out for and to take his temperature a couple of times through the night. He went off to get him and I started to worry after he was gone for ages, he eventually came back with Murf but said after being fine all day he had been sick and his temperature had spiked. He still felt the best thing would be for him to go home as long as we agreed to take him back to the out of hours vet at 9pm and took his temperature hourly through the night.

His temperature settled at about 2am, but all through the night he never acknowledged us taking his temp and this morning he is quieter than ever :mecry: I have given him a couple of small meals which have stayed down so far, but he hasn't come out for them I have feed him under the bed. I know he had a major procedure yesterday but from what has been said on here and what I have read surely he should get a real boost from the transfusion

I have an appointment at 10.30 with the specialist, and will speak to my vet later to see whether I am expecting too much too soon, but I think it looks like he doesn't want to fight this :mecry: Its so hard as my vet is really positive about treatment being sucessful but if a blood transfusion hasn't helped I am not sure what will :(
