September's Salutary Sayings

Thanks Griff. Even if our insurance refused to pay if Archie needed Noel's, or any other vet's, specialist skills we'd find the money somehow. I just wondered because some insurers will wiggle out of paying for stuff.

My really good friend in the US got bad news about one of her dogs over the weekend. Clover, her 13 year old Bassett mix has a tumour on her bladder. They can't attempt removal because it's too difficult and the op would likely kill her. They've opted not to give her chemo either and just let her live out her time whilst she is happy and still going about keeping them all in line. They are hoping she will see another Thanksgiving because the kids (both now in their 20's) will be home and they have a special bond with Clover. However they won't let her suffer if she goes down hill between now and then.

Oh your reply came in whilst I was writing this blackmagic. That is very interesting indeed. Thank you.

Right I told Archie if he persisted in taking his indoor toys outdoors then they would all end up in the washing machine. He doesn't like them being washed. He was on his final warning. They have now been in the washing machine and are currently in the dryer. In retaliation the little bugger has brought his outdoor toys indoors - complete with soil and dry mud. I give up

Before we stopped Murphy taking his bones outside he would bury them in among the trees at the back of the garden.

Days, weeks or months later he would dig them up again, covered in peaty dirt and mud. However, he took them to my husband to get them washed under the outside tap before he gnawed at them again. He wasn't going to eat a dirty bone.

We stopped him taking them outside after he dug up an ancient one that had gone soft. He had had a stomach bug and hadn't eaten for three days so was probably hungry as he demolished that bone.

The first we knew was when he suffered a blockage that the vet had to remove manually. It was a solid mass of dry bone crumbs.

How are you feeling this morning Alicia?

We went for a walk straight after the vets. What a wuss Archie is in there.

So. It is grass mites that are bothering him so he's now on steroids and he DOES have a heart murmur after all! It's only a grade 1 so nothing to panic about. The vet checked his throat, windpipe and lungs to see if there was anything there causing the cough but he was clear. His gums are a nice colour and he said he wouldn't expect a dog to develop a cough with only a grade 1 murmur. It seems likely that Archie was irritating his throat when he was scratching under his chin.

He has put a kilo on in weight though! He still has a nice shapely waist and isn't overweight but the vet doesn't want to see him gain any more. So fewer tangly twists and I'm going to have to be firm with my neighbour about feeding him treats over the fence.

Enjoy your break Loobie. I've driven through the Cotswolds but never stayed there, it is very pretty but must confess I prefer the rugged countryside of Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

Candy had a mad five minutes last night, charged upstairs, onto our bed, raced round it bouncing off the pillows, back down the stairs and repeat! She was so funny, and it was great to see her enjoying herself so much. She loves balls but the trouble is she sits and strips the cover off tennis balls then chews the dratted things in half so I have to throw them away and she won't chase a solid rubber one. Any ideas of a ball she can't destroy but will play with?

I love it when a dog has one of those silly dash around's. The sheer joy they exude is wonderful.

You can get those non destructible balls (boomers?) but they are plastic and not all dogs take to them. I got one for George and he wasn't interested. Archie inherited it but he's never really played with it. Mainly I think because they don't bounce. Sorry, that wasn't really helpful!

Have a nice time in the Cotswolds Loobie. I believe there are some very pretty chocolate box properties there. I don't care for flat but having been born and brought up with the fells of Lakeland I guess it's not surprising! The first time I went to Lincolnshire I couldn't believe how flat it all was and I really felt out of my comfort zone.
