September's Salutary Sayings

Thanks guys - I think she was in her late 60s. Her health hadn't been amazing for a couple of years. I nearly didn't get Walter and Jessie because I was going away and they were ready to leave just before I went away. She wasn't sure if she could cope with them for another couple of weeks as they were mental, but she wanted them to go to a special home, so she hung on to them for another couple of weeks for me  I picked them up the same day I landed home (after a 12 hour flight and lots of jet lag!). I will be forever thankful for her taking Missy in and trusting me to look after Walter and Jessie :)

Welcome back Reddichlady - sorry your health isn't good :GroupHug:

Ana's MOT was due when I was in Bali - totally forgot  My mechanic got a panicked message when I got home to do her MOT. I'll have to put Denzel's MOT date in my diary for next year, so I don't forget :)

I'll take Candy for a walk and just pop in to show her to Jan and Andy (the people who looked after Rosie that sad night) says OH at 4.10. At 4.55 I phoned his mobile to see how far he'd walked exactly..oh, I'll just finish my glass of wine and I'll be back. It's now 5.33. What did they give him the wine in, a bucket?? Poor dog hasn't had her dinner yet, and probably not a walk either. Men!

Yes I agree with Griff Suzeanna. Socialisation is good and she may have to stay with Jan and Andy in the future so it's as well to get her used to being at their place.

This reminds me of story my aunt told me. When I was a little girl my dad would sometimes take the dog for an evening walk. It was only when my aunt took Mack that my mum discovered the walk was to the pub as Mack took her right there and then pulled her in. Apparently he got a packet of crisps and a dish of mild every time my dad took him in! My father is a complete Idiot  :banghead:

He did have a good excuse, apparently their wine glasses were huge, three glasses took care of a bottle of wine! She met the cats nose to nose and was ok after an initial bark, explored the house upstairs and down, and made Laura sulk by sitting on her mum's knee instead of hers! Does anyone here use PetPlan insurance? They give you automatic 4 weeks insurance when you get a dog from the RSPCA, and seeing she has trouble with her eyes starting from the day after, if we continued with them it would be covered. If we went elsewhere it would be a pre existing condition and not covered. They are more expensive than a couple of others I've looked it (MoreThan, which we had Dyl and Rosie with and Tesco.)

Walter and Jessie are insured with pet plan. Not had to use them yet (touch wood) but they have one of the best reputations amongst my friends who are vets. Most vet practices will deal with them direct for payment, meaning that you don't have to shell out for a big bill and then claim it back. They aren't the cheapest, but in my opinion, if I can afford the monthly payments, I'd rather pay more for peace of mind should anything go wrong and they need to visit Noel Fitzpatrick  My two have lifetime cover with £7k per year vet fees and I think it's about £25 a month :)

all of my dogs have been with petplan...as is dex cat, they are really good...i had an issue with them regarding kota and her having been labelled agressive...they did however say give her 2 years and come back and we will see and they have covered her absolutely no issues at all. They always pay out, will pay the vets direct if pre agreed and will pay direct into your bank account if you want so no waiting for cheques...yes they are more expensive but having been with the one via vetuk and discovering that they had so many exclusions, were more per month and i got less for my money i am very happy with petplan

Petplan are more expensive than most but they do not hike the premiums if you make a claim. They do increase the premiums , like all policies, for increased costs, inflation etc. but having claims doesn't increase the premium. Many companies do hike the premium after a claim.

They do add on a copay of a percentage of the bill to the fixed excess once the dog is 10 years old which catches some people unawares.

I was recently speaking to a guy who had worked in insurance and he said that due to claim statistics premiums climb until about 10 years old, then increase less or reduce, because there are less claims at that age, but then increase again once the dog is about 13 years as claims increase again after that age. An interesting bit of information.

Yes thanks for that blackmagic. I think I can expect a hike on Archie's insurance at renewal as by then he will be almost 14. We are at the vets tomorrow too. I have noticed over the last couple of weeks a "little old man" look to him when he looks up at me - if you know what I mean, even though he still plays like a puppy and runs at the double everywhere.

Seeing as Jayne mentioned Noel Fitzpatrick I'm gonna ask a question that occurred to me the other day. Would an insurance company pay out for treatment from Noel, given that he often goes above and beyond anything else on offer, or would they only pay for less cutting edge technology?

Most policies now state that they will only pay reasonable costs and if they think the charge is excessive they will get their own vets to asses the costs.

They often also say they will not cover prosthesis or transplants except hip and elbow replacements.

Someone on another forum has had treatment for a cruciate repair from Fitzpatrick ( he declined the tv cameras) and Petplan covered it. However, now that the metal implant is causing problems and needs to be removed they are not giving his vet information on what exactly was used to enable him to remove it efficiently, just a general description.

They have done work for rescues at a discount.

Irish retriever rescue are currently raising funds to pay for surgery for a rescue dog with a deformed foot. Surgery will be a partial amputation and fitting a prosthesis. £1900 for the amputation , £1852 for the prosthesis. Scans etc will be additional to that.
