Metropolitan Police

Been waiting agggges to tell you this

The metropolitan police have been given the go ahead to adopt a similar policy to that of Merseyside [written by Neil Davies]

In brief, owners of dogs found to be of the pit bull type who are able to show a responsible attitude to ownership [they agree to neuter, muzzle, chip etc] will NOT have their dogs seized pending a court hearing.

This will only apply to responsible owners of dogs with good temperaments [as it does in Merseyside].

Dog fighters, those using dogs in anti social behaviour etc will still have their animals siezed.

The Met are pretty good in getting court dates through quickly and do advocate for the dogs. They have major issues with illness and stress in kennels and this new policy will hopefully bring about huge improvement in the condition of released dogs [they will spend a minimum amount of time in kennels, probably 2-3 weeks max]

In addition to this [and this is very very good news] in the new year, dlo's will be visiting every single kennelled dog. Those that are suitable for 4b applications [nice dogs, decent owners] will be released on bail prior to court hearings!

This is amazing and fantastic news.

Further to this, the met are looking into the possibility of not having to seize 4b dogs AT ALL. This hasn't been confirmed and cartainly hasn't been given the go ahead yet but will be bloody marvellous if it comes off.

DNB are in constant contact with the Met and are arranging a meeting for early in the New Year to discuss other plans the Met have in relation to the DDA.

We're also in touch with the ACPO advisory group and are hoping to see this policy becoming national. At the moment there are several forces who are unwilling to adopt it [for various reasons]

If it becomes National Policy they won't have any choice :) Richard Brunstrom likes it and he's the ACPO lead on dangerous dogs.

A few things need adapting to [like removing refs to individual forces] and of course there are some things that some forces may want to change to suit themselves, but the basics [and most important bits] will remain.

Again this isn't concrete yet but its looking hopeful.
