Well Dolly Doodle is home

It's all changed again. I saw Malcolm when I went to get Dolly and he showed me the x-rays. The mass is huge, over twice the size of her heart and from the top of her rib cage down to her tummy. He showed me where the airway was being blocked by the mass and how difficult it is to see what its attached to. He tried doing ultra sound from a different angle to the xrays to see if that helped but it didn't make the view any clearer.

He then spoke to a couple of specialists, who are experts at imaging. I've googled them (like you do  )

NICOLETTE HAYWARD

BVM&S DVR DipECVDI MRCVS

European Specialist in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging

KIT STURGESS

MA VetMB PhD CertVR DSAM CertVC MRCVS

RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Medicine

(Internal Medicine)

Apparently, when Malcolm emailed them both the x-rays they got very excited about them and want to see Dolly at Anderson Sturgess in Winchester next week. One of them specialises in endoscopy and the other in ultra-sound and they think that between them, they can a) get a better view and b) using the appropriate needle, get a sample of the mass.

The problem Malcolm had was that to take a sample when he couldnt see clearly would have potentially punctured the lung or caused a bleed.

So, we're not going for MRI on Monday now but instead will go to Winchester on Tuesday. If they can't get a clear enough view again, then we'd need to go for a CAT scan which would have to be done at the RCVS in London.

As for the mass, Malcolm said without a biopsy its hard to be sure, but cancer can't be ruled out due to the rate its grown. Having said that, her white blood cells were fine and she doesn't present any other symptoms. It could be a foreign body thats got lodged in the airway and then infected, which is possible considering Dolly's previous stair/carpet/table eating months ago.

After all that, I still don't really know what's going to happen longer term. Until they have better scans they can't say whether the mass can be removed.

Dolly in herself is actually quite perky considering, although did have a huge coughing fit when I went in to get her, although Malcolm said she'd been quiet in her kennel. She has had some supper and is now asleep on the sofa

Once again, my vets have been fantastic and I trust them completely to make the right decisions for Dolly. We've come home with Metacam and anti-biotics and Dolly has got some childrens Benelyn to sooth her sore throat.

Thank you all so very much for the good thoughts. You have all been so supportive, esepcially this last year and it really does mean a lot :mecry: :flowers:
