snow
Back from the vets - she was very pleased with Nog's progress cos the bugger decided to use his leg almost continually whilst there were other dogs there naturally however he soon resorted to normal as soon as he was in the room alone with her - so she said hey look he uses it going left - I said ummmm really? *evil grin* she said yes look let me show you .... so she did and he did so she said lets try it outside ... I said ohhhkayyyy *smirk* out we went ... and lo and behold a 3 legged Nogster going left handed should a vet call one of her patients "a little sod" ? Anyway he's come home with Provicox and Antirobe - the leg is warmer than the good one and the flushing scars suggests there might be a wee bit of an infection in the leg (or it could just be him dissolving his stitches ) so we'll try him on some AB's and pain relief and see how he goes. The one bit of good news is though that she feels he can go over the fields now and try some rough ground exercise on and off lead - we dont have to be quite so precious about the leg anymore and she was happy that he's using stairs and jumping on and off the bed - in fact he caught me by surprise in the car park and lept down out of the car on his own rather than wait for me to lift him down for the first time since he broke the leg back in August - mind you he still made me lift him back in again! Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with provicox in sighthounds - I googled it and it's a NSAID and given that Nog doesn't tolerate Rimadyl any longer I just want to be 100% sure that this one is fine (vet knows he cant tolerate Rimadyl thats why she gave Provicox it's me googling thats made me go ermmmmmm). Do you mean Previcox? Mollydog has been on Previcox since Aug 2008. No problems at all, it really helps her a lot and in retrospect I wish I'd started her on it earlier. It's supposed to be safer in long-term use than Metacam or Rimadyl, and better for 'bony' problems. Whether it will suit Nog the wonderdog I can't tell you, but probably the only way to find that out is to try!
celeste
I've wanted a pair of them for ages! Do report back how you like them (or not) Will do Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with provicox in sighthounds - I googled it and it's a NSAID and given that Nog doesn't tolerate Rimadyl any longer I just want to be 100% sure that this one is fine (vet knows he cant tolerate Rimadyl thats why she gave Provicox it's me googling thats made me go ermmmmmm). Obviously Bens not a sighthound but he's just had to come off Previcox as it was making him lethargic and I think caused his anorexia, after being off it for a week he's masses better and has really perked up, saying that though, my vet said it was one of the safest on the market and if it does cause a reaction it's generally the stomach that effected rather than the liver or kidney's, did you see the site about the young lab that died on Previcox ? it put the wind up me when I read it. chickentikka
I've wanted a pair of them for ages! Do report back how you like them (or not) I luffs mine I have really odd shaped feet and toes, inherited from my dad and made worse by a mis-spent youth of wearing killer f*ck me shoes They are a bit off a faff to get on but if you do it slowly toe by toe they are fine, people look at you as if you are Shrek if you wear them out but so what. Biggest tip is keep your toenails really short and persevere with the wierd feeling, after an hour or so you'll love them. cycas
... should say I've read that 'Rowdy's last vacation' page too, and I'm not convinced. Maybe the dog had an unusual reaction to Previcox, but I note that this was a dog that was hit by a car, there's little detail about how carefully he was examined - were there x-rays? Was the dog kept in? He wasn't able to stand unaided, wasn't eating well - yet none the less they took him 9 hours in the car. Then no vet till the day after the day after the journey, even though he was clearly ill afterwards. No emergency vet in the night either, even though the dog was projectile vomiting and very distressed. There was no post mortem either, and given that, I'm not entirely clear why the owner is so fixed on the previcox as only possible cause of death: I'm no vet, but I'd have thought that an undiagnosed internal injury would be more likely. If my dog wasn't able to stand, I don't think I'd want to put her through a 9 hour car journey. Edited April 21, 2010 by cycas

Sarah B
Well HRH has definitly got a sore hip Vet has prescribed Metacam, lead rest and no haring about/jumping about like a twit. However trying to explain this to Scooby is, well, difficult. We shall see how he is after 7 days and if he's no better he is to go back. If he is better then it's light off lead excercise for another week, then see how he goes etc etc. If he is no better then he'll have to have more tests The vet says he *may* have the onset of arthritis - not good as he is only 5 I shall look into hydrotherapy and physiotherapy for him tomorrow. I think he'll prefer hydro. Can peeps with waterpups tell me roughly what it costs on average for a session? Been to the docs as have been told I have sleep apnoea but my lovely doc says it's more common than we think and not to worry about it Bit wierd being told you stop breathing in your sleep though How do you get diagnosed with that? OH has told me I do it, and I know he does it. I thought it was normal ... finally ordered a pair of 5 Fingered Feet... I had to Google them - OH came in and said "Oh my God you are not having a pair of them...." Edited as I have crapper hands than normal tonight Edited April 21, 2010 by Sarah B
safneo
Sam, everything crossed for real money too! Alex, for when you need one. Kelly, what an amazing smile. No wonder you can't be grumpy. Suzeanna, what a dreadful, dreadful situation. Jules, could it be brought on by stress or have you always had it? Julia, should have asked him if he used prong collars too! We bumped into Clare1976, her hubby and the lovely Lady on our evening walk. I have to say how amazing she is for 15. And she still has the biggest smile , especially with her ball in her mouth! Making sure Saffy didnt nab it!

Edited as I have crapper hands than normal tonight Sarah, Neo has just been diagnosed with arthritis and he is only 6. When I took Saffy to hydro we went to a proper qualified one (on insurance) it was £25 a session. When we used to go for fun prior to a different one, think is was about £15. I am going to price it up again now for Neo too though he doesn't 'do' swimming!

snow
Opps sorry yes Previcox - my only concern was that the rimadyl did cause Nog's tummy to be sore & bouts of vomiting and he had to have it only with an antacid which he detested, the side effects list also mentions sore tummys with previcox but I've done a bit more googling and founds lots of sighthounds that have been on it long term without problems so I'll just keep an eye on his appetite and see how we get on. Nogs hydro is £20 a session with a fully qualified Hydro Therapist at a specialist Hydrotherapy center for £20 Nog gets a hot spa bath prior to swimming, his swim session, a rinse and shampoo and full blow dry. Session lengths vary when he first went he was in the spa longer than he swam for nowadays he's free swimming in the big pool against the jets and his average swimming time is around 15 mins. It's certainly well worth the money - Nogs wasted muscles are really coming back now and he's starting to kick from the hip as opposed to the toe flicks he had been doing. I don't like wearing shoes very much but can't really go about barefoot anymore, even in the house it's a bit iffy with the dogs leaving bits of chewed up toys and things strewn about. I've lost count of the number of times I've removed a piece of plastic of unknown origin from my foot I've been wearing crocs but they still feel like shoes. It is real work , I am talking to them tomorrow to see if they have real money to go with it Yay! Hope it works out
