aaaaargh, Mollydog's surgeon reckons her leg may be having problems with her implants! The bone has fused, so it's not as though it will go back to how it was, but I really don't want her to have to go through it all over again to get the metal out again!

Oh no! Thats like Nog all over again I hope that Molly doesn't have to have the plate out as it's right back to square one for you both Group_Hug_Emoticon.gif What kind of problems has she been having with the leg? I'm curious because even removing it might not work - it hasn't (yet) for Nog in terms of him being able or maybe willing to use the leg again.

Speaking of Nogs leg ... for the first time since it happened I am not happy with M&S we put in a claim for 17 sessions of hydrotherapy and since putting the claim in we've paid out for 6 more and have another 6 booked our policy states we have £750 a year for complimentary treatment which includes hydrotherapy nowhere in the policy does it state we need their prior approval or that there is any other restriction aside from the £750 cap. Today they have settled the last claim I put in and have paid for the full 17 sessions however they have written a rather snotty remark about only usually paying for 10 sessions but they would pay for those 17 claimed for but no more. I have just got off the phone with them - they have acknowledged that the policy document and booklet does NOT say they will only pay for 10 sessions, nor does it say I need their prior approval (which I had anyway and when I had queried it had not been told about a 10 session limit) however it it their policy to only pay for 10 sessions regardless of how many the vet thinks the animal might need. They will not reimburse us for the 6 sessions we've already had whilst waiting for the claim to be settled nor will they pay for any further sessions despite admitting we have used less than half of the £750 cap allowed. I pointed out that surely it's down to a vet to decide whether or not the treatment is needed not an insurance adjuster only to be told I was lucky they paid for hydro at all as most policys dont and they had paid the 17 sessions claimed as a good will gesture - I then said well on that basis you should clearly pay for the other 6 we've had whilst waiting for you to settle the claim only to be told that they had paid as much as they were prepared to for hydro but if the vet and I wanted Nog to continue hydro we could of course pay for the sessions ourselves. mad.gif

The problem with escalating it is that we are going to need to continue the policy for (hopefully) many more years to come, plus Nog's still getting treatment and may have to be on medication for a while longer. Up to now I cannot fault M&S after all they've paid out over £9k without any quibble whatsoever - I'm wary of "upsetting the applecart" and having them suddenly find a way to get out of paying any more or worse still deciding they shouldn't have paid out for previous treatment etc. I'm pretty sure that if I put in a complaint then I could win it - but tbh I'm £120 down but risking £9k and more to come so I don't think I'm brave enough to go the complaint route at the moment.

As it is we had been thinking that the hydro wasn't really going to do much more for Nog, there's been no real improvement recently, so I'll probably swim him again this week then rest him for 2 weeks and see how the legs is then, maybe just have a maintenance swim once a month or every 2 - 3 weeks if the muscle tone deteriorates. As of 18th May Nog's leg will have reached the return to full activity stage - no restrictions on anything, we'd been discussing for the past few weeks just accepting this is as good as it's going to get and just letting Nog "get on with things" using the leg or not using it as he chooses and letting him go over the fields both on and off lead with or without other dogs around and seeing how he copes - with the hope that maybe he'd start to use it as spontaneously as he flipping stopped.

Oh she'll use the leg all right! That's kind of the problem, she isn't in the least bit protective of it, she'll go 'BOING' up 3 feet into the porch without using the steps, or take off madly around the house or garden doing 'Mollydog's greatest races' or she'll stand up on her hind legs to wrestle with Az or just to bounce like a loon while yodelling. Or she'll decided to demonstrate to a dog 7 years younger with 4 working legs that actually he's MUCH slower than her (she's such a flirt, and she's convinced all the boys like a fast girl). rolleyes.gifohmy.gif Then afterwards she goes 'Oh yeah - I forgot, THAT REALLY HURTS!' and walks on 3 legs briefly until she forgets again. You should see the muscles on that injured leg, it's like she's just walked off the track with them!

She wrenched it last week, I think either playing with Az, or boinging sideways (on lead) after a squirrel, but the main problem is that she's got these blood blisters over the area where the implants are, and they keep swelling up and bursting. They seem to hurt most when they are swelling, it's better once they burst. We're not sure if she's actually rejecting the implants, or if it's just that having screws, wire, pins etc inside her leg while she's using it to do pirouettes is just catching on things and causing bleeding. unsure.gif

Short of crating her for the rest of her life, which is obviously not a reasonable option* , I can't stop her using that leg fairly intensively. Lead walking doesn't help at all, she just gets louder and more rumbustious and leaps about inside the house to compensate, and little Mr Lurcher thinks it's all terrific fun and eggs her on!

* velcro her to the floor possibly...? I'm tempted...

.... Sorry to hear about Nogs insurance difficulties. It does seem very mean of them to restrict him on that when the cost is below their own cap, but I know what you mean about not wanting to upset the applecart...

Craig was talking about putting Molls into hydro at one point when her leg had that 'deflated balloon' look, but because it's never quite stopped bleeding, we never did it and in the end she has managed to exercise it more than enough without.

We're so lucky here that the local practice has a specialist surgeon and a hydro pool, they are really good on dogs. Don't know what they are doing with rabbits, mind - but great on dogs!

Snow - Make a complaint to the insurance ombudsman flowers.gif

RMF : Had a nap on the sofa to catch up on the sleep which I didn't get last night, then sorted out the living room and made use of a load of old cushions and pillows by stuffing the gubbins into the huge beanbag I use for sunbathing. Tis much better now, more filled out.
