Katiebob
I have a chicken jumper made up if you need one . I knitted a few back when we collected our ex-battery hens as they were pretty threadbare. That is really sweet of you but I think tonight's supposed to be the coldest night so if she survives then I hope the temperatures are going to improve. But if you're offer is still open (and I'll confirm if she's still alive in the morning), I'd very much appreciate that If you let me know where to send a donation/cost etc. I'll pm you my address. Cheryl - I bought some silver laced Wynadotte eggs and one hatched - and it's the strangest looking bird I've got Quite possibly the eggs got mixed up but it was hatched months and months ago and it's still growing, has feathered legs and I can't identify it yet However, you might like to consider getting some Barnevelder hatching eggs. They are truly beautiful birds and they lay really dark brown eggs, like Maran eggs.
phoebejo
Barnevelders are on my to-do list I lie awake at night thinking about what breeds I'd like Space left for six more eggs and can't decide if I should hatch Cream Legbars (which were always the ones I wanted first) or some Bluebelles like my beloved Violet Since losing Catherine she and I have built up a very strong bond and I'd said I wanted more of her. I've kind of blown my budget on the Wyandottes and should really work out what's cheapest buuuuuuuuuuuuut I know I could probably sell excess legbars, cockerels too. phoebejo
I took nearly 100 photos of the chooks in the snow this morning I know you'll get bored so I'll only subject you to 20 of them Violet on one leg! Norty Pancake: Eliza: Mrs Pants thinks she's a supermodel She'll pose quite happily all day long. 9/10 Freya: Tallulah: Juliet is another who loves having her photo taken Primrose puffed up her feathers to keep out the cold Quite a few were sat on their favourite mound of earth preening themselves. Others just looked miserable. They can't wait for the summer. Maisy hates having her photo taken so this took me ages to get:

Yantan
Bejo your chooks look really well and in fab condition I'd love to be able to have a couple of chooks or three but despite our house being built in 1879 we still have a condition (can't remember the correct terminology) in the deeds that stops us having any. And all of the neighbours are aware of it as it's been a bit of standing joke so it's not like I can sneek them in and then play dumb. We had a similar thing in our last house but I wasn't surprised by that as it was only built in 1983. It was a shame too as we had a much, much bigger garden there and it would have been ideal for free range hens.
dirtychicken
I'm alive Very glad to hear it Your chooks are looking gorgeous Di - how did your moulting chook do overnight?
Katiebob
Cheryl - your chooks DO look well By some strange coincidence, I also took a load of pics of mine today too - particularly the ones I'm always going on about! Moulting hen is still moulting but very much with us, thank goodness Sorry, the pic is a bit out of focus but gives you the general idea although in reality she looks worse than this! Hen on the right is a normally feathered black rock, on the left is the one that's moulting but it's difficult to see in the pic: This is my handsome Amber Star cockerel. Isn't he gorgeous? and this is my Amber Star girl so I suppose, technically she's his wife Then there's my beautiful Barnevelder hen - her feathering is double laced and I love her to bits and I can't wait to get another couple of Barnevelder hens in the spring. And another one to show off her beautiful feathers: I'm going to stop here and post this before I lose what I've done. I'll add some more pics in a sec. Katiebob
Ok, to continue: Black lace Wyandotte bantam: One of my strange Dutch bantams with a pompom on it's head (they were given to me) The other one has a white pompom and is even weirder It's in the next picture with my unidentified chick! and my strange looking chick who I can't identify I worked out I got the hatching eggs in July last year - I still can't decide what this bird is going to be though, hopefully it's a hen!! I'd say it was a Bluebell except it's got feathered legs. The shape is very similar to my other Bluebell but who knows? Probably a hybrid of one sort or another. One day it might even lay an egg though heaven knows when Fascinating hobby and I love them all, despite their sometimes strange appearances!! Wendbert
I never knew chooks could come in so many different breeds. They really are lovely, all of them
phoebejo
Di yours are gorgeous I like your pair of Amber Stars. Tallulah is one of those but she's completely white, she hasn't got any of the brown bits. When we went to buy her Emily had originally wanted a White Star but the lady on the farm said they weren't really suitable for first time hen owners and suggested Emily chose an Amber Star instead. They ranged from pure white like Tallulah to quite heavily marked ones and as she'd wanted a White Star she picked lilly white Tallulah. Your pom pom heads have got Poland in them haven't they? But definitely something else too Bluebelle lookalike could be a Maran I suppose? I nearly bought some Copper Blue Marans eggs today but plumped for Cream Legbars to complete my incubator. I'm sooooooooooooo excited

I'm sooooooooooooo excited Actually I think I meant to say they were Polish Bantams!! Whatever they are I think they're purebred because the person who gave them to me specialised in that breed but had to give up due to ill health. Not a typing error on my part, just a memory error .................... which brings me to the next part of your post ...... yes, it will be a Maran - a Copper Blue maran now you mention it!! I'd forgotten, I bought 6 silver laced Wyandotte eggs and 6 Copper Blue maran eggs. Two hatched (one of each) but one died. I'd assumed it was the Maran that died but obviously not No doubt, it will mature when it's good and ready then I'm such a numbskull most of the time Must be my age
