Sadly both Metacam and Rimadyl can cause liver damage. I'm amzed that a vet would give both. Dogs should be tested BEFORE administering either. Both can in some cases occasionally cause extreme fatal reactions. I'd make sure your vet doesn't give any more of either. Try googling the other drug + side effects.

“A dog that is potentially a candidate for long term use of meloxicam (Metacam) should have a complete examination by the veterinarian, a screening blood panel to establish baseline biochemical values, and ideally some kind of recheck testing two weeks after starting meloxicam. This is because most adverse reactions, unusual as they may be, occur within this initial time frame and it is important that they be recognized before they get out of hand. After this initial period, complete blood panels should be screened every six months, an important step with any medication for long term use, not just the NSAIDs. .....â€

Me, I'd contact a Homeopathic Vet asap to try to repair the damage and prevent any more. To find one, try here...

As soon as you get her home, I'd start giving her Bach Crab Apple which will help flush the toxins out her system a bit, even just rub a few drops in her fur. And Milk Thistle which helps repair liver damage. Both from health shops.

My Cassie took forever to recover from GA for spaying, either the anaesthetic they use now is worse than used to be or it was the Metacam which they seem to use routinely in my vets now.

Thanks all for your good wishes, I already have Milk Thistle in and am up on liver friendly diets thanks to Barney and his liver tumour, but will read the links. Thanks Muriel :flowers:

The vet nurse rang this morning, Daisy wasn't sick overnight but they are keeping her in on a drip. She won't eat. I can call in and see her this afternoon. She can't come home today. :mecry:

Is there an equivalent of an MRSA type of infection in dogs as I am sure that this is all linked to her original operation. At the moment I'm too upset to be angry and ask the right questions, but her treatment over the past 3 weeks has been very poor IMO. I am looking to change vets asap. It used to be a really good practice but sadly the quality of the vets and service seems to have deteriorated.

Anyone in Northampton got any recommendations.
