Crickey :( this is awful. Where on earth are they all going to go, poor dogs. In general, are these a breed that finds a new home easily?

Can't believe the first 'comment' is complaining about the article stating the kennel is near Corby. Get a life.

Up to 100 St Bernard dogs have been rescued after being abandoned without food and water at a kennel.

Two of the animals were in such a bad condition they later died.

The dogs, which include puppies and fully-grown adults, had been locked in their own cages and left unfed for several days.

Their bowls had been upturned and many of the animals were covered in their own excrement.

The kennels belonged to a well-known dog breeder, Mary-Ellen Collis.

She has disappeared and neither the police or the RSPCA have been able to trace her.

RSPCA officers made the shocking discovery at the Wardana Kennels in Brigstock, Northants, on Saturday evening after being called by a concerned member of the public who had alerted the police.

It is not known how long the dogs had been left but it could have been for up to a week.

A team of 12 RSPCA officers have been working round-the-clock over the last three days to remove the animals and rehouse them at nearby kennels.

But they were unable to save two of the dogs who were in such a poor state they died at the vets.

The remaining animals have been temporarily placed at kennels in Nottingham and Peterborough where they are undergoing full-health checks.

Once vets are satisfied they are in a reasonable condition they will attempt to find new owners.

It is thought that four of the dogs are privately owned and had been staying at the kennels while their owners were on holiday.

The RSPCA has reunited two of the dogs with their owners and is still trying to get in touch with the remaining two.

Justin Stubbs, an RSPCA inspector who was at the kennel said: 'There was faeces everywhere and upturned bowls. Something has gone wrong.

'Because they are such big dogs you wouldn't expect to see so many dogs in such conditions.

'I'll be going home and having a stiff drink tonight. But it looks like we can do something with them.'

The Wardana Kennels and Cattery is well-known amongst dog owners for its St Bernards and Mrs Collis, 50, is an established breeder.

She was a founding member of the Kennel Club's Accredited Breeder Scheme which was set up in 2004 to encourage the breeding of healthy puppies.

She is also a qualified veterinary nurse and animal groomer.

The Kennel Club last night expressed their 'deep concern' over the conditions.

A spokesman said: 'The Kennel Club is deeply concerned to hear about the alleged conditions that the dogs belonging to Mrs Collis have been found in and her apparent disappearance.

'As an Accredited Breeder, Mrs Collis' premises have been inspected by the Kennel Club and at that time there was nothing to give any cause for concern.

'The Kennel Club is disturbed to now hear about the alleged dramatic decline in her dogs' living conditions.

 it all sounds very suspicious. As people have said, where are all the kennel staff? Surely they should have turned up for work and finding the owner not around should have got on with their work anyway. Then if there was no sign of her after the second day surely they should have alerted somebody. It doesn't sound right at all! x
