Dog Control Order - Camden, Bristol Etc

Camden council are currently consulting on the proposal to introduce a 'Dog Control Order' across the entire borough.

This will mean dogs must be kept on lead except in specific 'dog exercise' areas.

No more rambling across Hampstead Heath or any other park in the borough with your dog(s) running free. No! You'll be confined to small enclosed areas, which will probably be hardly adequate for the numbers of dogs expected to use them.

If you think it's not in your back yard, so to speak, you're wrong! Other councils will use the precedents set and you'll experience poorly socialised dogs visiting your areas too.

The consultation is due to end on the 15th March. Please click on this link Camden/Dog Control and make your feelings known.

Thanks

This is the thin end of the wedge. These people will not be happy until they have ALL dogs on leads ALL of the time. We dog owners need to get together and stop this ridiculous curtailment of our freedom.

New Forest Dog Owners had this problem years ago and fended it off by all sticking together and protesting. As far as I can see they are still having to be vigilant.

The anti dog brigade will never give up, we as dog owners need to stand up and be counted.

TBF I can see why they are doing this in Camden as my OH works there. Everyday he passes drug dealers with big bullbreeds/rotties etc with huge studded collars encouraged to bark menacingly at passers-by.

The dog control orders are sadly penalising the good dog owners as these idiots won't care a jot about breaking one more law.

My OH said the other day a bloke was selling staffie puppies out the back of a van (billed as pit bull pups) - he just wanted to buy them all to rescue them, he also sees rottie pups etc sold in the same way - we look at Sadie and think how lucky she is she didn't end up there.

Camden council are trying to push through a bye law that will prevent dogs being offlead in any and all areas that are open to the public.

This means Hampstead Heath, Parliment Hill Fields, Primrose Hill and Highgate woods to name but a few will be out of bounds for dogs running off lead.

It has cause a lot of trouble locally, petitions are everywhere. There are few places in Lonodn where you can let your dog offlead and now they are trying to take those away. I signed the petition in my vets.

All the staff/wardens on the open spaces are against this but the council are adament.

If they get away with this in North London - it will go to other open spaces in London and then all over the country.

Hampstead Heath is a very large open space and is used by dog walkers and runners all year round, other people just use it in the few warm months we have yet they are the very people who want dogs kept on leads because they do not like the dogs being anywhere near them.

I think they will have some trouble with Primrose Hill as Queen Victoria deeded the park for people to exercise their dogs. Nice lady.

OH Dear!!! Hopefully there will enough people to fight this?? I spent most of my time in London in Richmond Park, I loved the city but had to rely on that space to get my sanity back!! Can't imagine what an impact that will have on you!!! :(

Here's hoping something can be done to stop this rediculus(sp) trend.

Richmond Park is a Royal Park and is not controlled by any council. The same goes for Wimbledon Common which is run by the Conservators of the Common, this also includes Putney Heath and Common. It has been a rule on the Common for a number of years now that no more than 4 dogs can be walked together unless you have a licence.

For reference the following London parks are also controlled by the Royal Parks and not particular councils:

Green Park

St James's Park

Hyde Park

Kensington Gardens

Greenwich Park

Regents Park

Bushey Park

Brompton Cemetery

The City Council in Leicester tried to segregate dogs off on a park local to me but it was deeded as a park for dogs - so they didn't get away with it!

I've just sent my two-penth worth to Camden Council - their website says the following:-

Please note:

  • These proposals do not apply to Primrose Hill or Regents Park
  • The Dogs on Lead Order does not apply to Hampstead Heath
