  2. This has now been passed it seems, full bill is here: Scottish Dog Control 1. The bill modernises the law on control of dogs. It enables local authorities to impose measures on the owner, or the person in charge, of a dog where that person has failed to keep the dog under control. It also extends the liability of a person where a dog is dangerously out of control under the dangerous dogs act 1991 to all places, not only public places. 2. The bill repeals the dogs act 1871 ("the 1871 act"). Section 2 of that act enables a court to make an order that a dog has to be kept under control by the owner or destroyed following a complaint that it is dangerous and not kept under proper control. The bill replaces requirements under the 1871 act with a new regime of dog control notices which can be issued by local authorities without application to the courts. The dangerous dogs act 1989, which extends and supplements the 1871 act, is also repealed. 3.Subsection (3) makes provision as to when a dog is out of control. This requires both that the proper person is not keeping the dog under control effectively and consistently, and that the behaviour of the dog, or the size and power of the dog, gives rise to alarm or apprehensiveness on the part of any person. The two parts of the test require to be met. A dog which is large and powerful and which might otherwise cause alarm or apprehensiveness but is kept under control by the proper person is not out of control. Whereas a dog which may not be large or powerful but behaves in a manner which causes alarm or apprehensiveness and the proper person fails to control it effectively is out of control. The alarm and apprehensiveness must also be reasonable. This means that the behaviour of the dog and any resulting alarm or apprehensiveness will be viewed from an objective standpoint.
  3. Me neither I'm really struggling too (loss of work and been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, thankfully mild but its a struggle some days) and am just about hanging on to the house, have cut back on all the pets food to the cheapest possible + I live on next to nothing and haven't had a good 'supermarket shop' for months as I can't afford to - my pets are very much my life (sadly two are struggling - thankfully I held on to their insurance policies even though I have to find fares to referral vets and excess payments each time I see the vet because of Ed's age) . Things are pretty sh* but I am hopeful - I have to be to keep going - I've just spend a weekend camping, a great 'free' break (well no more than I would've spent on food at home anyway) and goes to show how you can enjoy life simply and cheaply sometimes and have a good time. It annoys me when I hear others who say they can't afford their pets yet they have holidays, smoke, etc. and never consider may be re-evaluating and finding ways to cut back.
  4. Sadly some just don't want to learn either (don't know if this is sometimes down to arrogance) or they have their own ideas about it regardless of what you try to teach them - I often take Roobs with me fundraising and see 1st hand how some parents think how well their kids are behaving around dogs.
  5. Me too. I waited 20 years before I could have my own dogs (as an adult) and still feel I missed out. Yes, I enjoyed the travelling but sometimes I just did it for travelling's sake because I couldn't think of anything else to do to excite me. I spent all day out walking with my two on saturday (after a short agility lesson) but in 'my old life' doing something on a saturday meant either working or going to the pub. Am sure my pets keep me sane - I don't feel alone with them even though am on my own and am sure I'd never have had such a positive experience of moving house 7 years ago if I didn't have them. I have just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and am sure I'd seize up completely if I didn't have to walk them (+ am sure it helps re endorphins as well) so all in all the best prescription.
  6. Which rescue is this for?
  7. I hope they didn't suffer and my heart really goes out to the old lady
  8. I think it was Fi from Lizzies Barn who wanted 4000 dog collars for her art instillation that represented a number of dogs pts. We take out of a pound that if we didn't take them on the 8th day they will pts and are using this in our publicity but not sure if message gets through as Wales has a bad record re strays and unwanted dogs. People genuinely don't know the extent of the problem and when they do don't want to think too hard about it as its too painful for them so its put at the back of their mind.
  9. I stopped working as a volunteer with the Witness service after 12 years because of the courses we ended up going on all the time on how to be PC --- while I understood a fraction of the courses was necessary we were told we weren't allowed to use colloquilisms that I'd grown up with and that you had to call ladies, etc. 'women'. I will always stop to help anyone as long as my own safety isn't being compromised (but am sure then I'd help and worry about how I could've got hurt later).
  10. These two Samoyed went missing from the garden of an active (but elderly) lady's home on Tues PM at around 1830-1900. The home is quite isolated and in the midst of dense country and farmland. Local people are aware, by phone, for example, Wadhurst Estate, and the local police, Railtrack at Wadhurst, RSPCA, vets, Kit Wilson Rescue Centre, Samoyed Association etc. The owner Veronica Gunston, is concerned the dogs may be picked up or are contained in an outhouse or farm-building. There are travellers active nearby which is of concern. What we need is a team of volunteers to help a) search and b) poster everywhere sensible within a 20 mile radius. Volunteers could ring Mary Starling on 07742 569 129 to coordinate. Please try to help if you can this weekend.
  11. I have just heard of two Samoyeds belonging to Veronica Gunston, a dog and a bitch that have been missing since Tuesday. Veronica is 84 years of age and lives in Wadhurst, East Sussex. Does anyone know of Sammy people living nearby who could give Veronica some support. The dogs are Zeus 10 years who is microchipped. He is wearing a collar with the Vets T.N. at Battle 01424 772148. The second Sam is a bitch Cliquot who is 6 years. not microchipped but wearing a similar collar. Veronica thinks they got out of the garden rather than being stolen.
  12. Ollie has made a good recovery and is back home again --- he's still being monitored by the vet as he's still got a bit of cystitis and he thinks his bladder's not quite back to normal. I have my cwtchy norty cat back
  13. Bloods better but as they said this morning (they rang at 10 to 7) if he'd come in with these 'improved' results they would still be concerned. They still don't think he's producing enough urine so are going to try to measure it now as well). His temperature spiked quite high last night but its back to normal (poor love had to be sprayed with water). Am meant to be going over sometime after 5.30 this evening. He's still eating and quite bright which am pleased about at least and thankfully he's an easy going cat which helps with his treatment.
  14. Just rung the vets and he's running a high temperature now --- lots of hopeful thoughts re the bloods tomorrow
