gooster
Hi all As you may have seen in RMF, I appear to have broken Charliegoo. He wasn't quite right on his right hind last week, and we had a flyball show today. I warned the team that he may not be able to race, but as he seemed ok over the last couple of days, I decided to let him play. He did 2 races, but in the 3rd race he came back on 3 legs. The judge has a dog who has done a similar thing, and it ended up being the cruciate ligament. I had a physio check him over at the event who said there was nothing she could mend, but she suspects he has ruptured his cruciate. I gave him the afternoon to rest before checking his legs again. I then asked another physio to check him who specialises in rehab of injuries, and she agrees it seems that it is cruciate. He still won't weight bear on the leg, and if he does try and put weight on it, it just collapses underneath him. There is a specialist orthopedic vet in Crewe that I am going to take him to tomorrow, as the rehab physio said the sooner it is operated on, the more chance of a successful repair we will have. My main worry is the fact that he is 12 in January, and not a spring chicken. I know his flyball career is more or less finished, but does anyone have any tips for recovery Tina decent quality of life?
owl
Sorry to hear it turned out to be cruciate ligament. But to encourage you, I did know a dog who had that op when she was a couple of years older than Charlie and she made a full recovery and continued to lead an active life. gooster
Just come out of vets now. Tom is 90% sure it's his cruciate. Left Charlie there to have x rays to confirm. Tom thinks TPLO is going to give us the best chance of success. Spoke to mum and dad about what to do, as the vets is over an hour from home (in good traffic), and he needs to have the op tomorrow. They think I should leave him today whilst I am in the area, but I disagree. Charlie hates the vets, so I don't want to leave him there unnecessarily
blackmagic
Best advice for a good recovery is to strictly follow the vets rehab instructions. My bitch tore her cruciate ligament swimming in the sea. The leg was okay when she went into the sea. When she came out one leg collapsed under her. She had the banding operation, TPLO wasn't available then. She was 10 years old at he time and recovered well. Hydrotherapy helped her a lot. gooster
Thanks, he has had the op this morning and the vet is happy so far. A good angle result for TPLO is between 5 and 10 degrees, charlie's is 9 degrees. He has had an epidural for pain relief and seems happy. He can come home tomorrow morning, so mum and dad are going to pick him up. Thankfully they were on their way home from holiday on Anglesey with the caravan, so they made a detour and put the caravan on a field at the vet's house (we are friends!!). I have to go back to work tomorrow, so won't get to see him till the evening. Now, how to keep a bouncy nutcase of a dog quiet for his rehab period?? eve
Glad he had the TPLO. As I said on the RMF thread Tiffy has had this done on both back legs. She was able to put weight on it the next day. Restricting her exercise was a tad problematic though lol. Not so much the walking/running etc but stopping her from jumping on and off sofas was a bit of a palaver. Anything she could jump on was barricaded to the nth degree. Lots of heal quickly thoughts for Charlie and good luck with keeping him quiet thoughts for you
gooster
That's what I'm worried about. He loves a cuddle on the sofa and sleeps on my bed at night. I suppose I'll be relegated to the floor as well then

I suppose I'll be relegated to the floor as well then oh yes and stairs - no stairs allowed for weeks either. We had to put babygates at the bottom of the stairs as she used to like being up in my bedroom when I was out and would have sneaked up there. gooster
Sounds like it's going to be hard work!! Spoke to the vet this morning and he can come home Apparently if he is forced to go somewhere slowly, he will use the leg. But if he goes at a million miles an hour (the speed he usually goes everywhere at!), then he won't use it. As we need to get him using it asap, he's going to have to accept going places a bit slower until he's better!!
eve
yay for Charlie coming home It is a lot of work but sooo worth it. Lots of taking things at a slow pace thoughts for you
EAD
Kyla had cruciate surgery in 2008 (aged 4), my vets did the banding procedure. She has had no bother with the leg until earlier this year, had an op a few weeks ago to remove the clip and band. Shes still limping a bit so atm im keeping my fingers crossed. Give Charlie a big from us.

Gnasher
Poor Charliegoo hope he is soon recovered. When he has recovered a little more hydrotherapy might help him regain use of his leg. There are some places who use treadmills with water which are very good although as I discovered to my cost with Gnasher there are excellent places, not so good places and places which are pretty appalling and do more harm than good.
