Peachy
I think you're doing the right thing as well. It's definitely what I would do in your position. She has a chance of a very happy and healthy life for a good few years yet so that's worth the gamble for her. for you though because you must be feeling a bit confused and for Dolly Doodle who probably isn't

Phoenyx
The decision is the worst bit Dolly looks at me with those big, trusting brown eyes and I will always try and do the right thing by all of my dogs, but as much as I'm hopeful that the operation will cure Dolly, there's a huge doubt that I could be agreeing to an operation that could kill her Hell and high water. It's a dreadful decision to make, as I know only too well here with Skeeter. Will be thinking of you and Dolly and wishing her a full and quick recovery
BillyMalc
Thank you Last night I emailed Malcolm and said I wanted to go ahead with the operation. It's going to be a risky operation and there will be weeks of recovery after but if we carry on with the medication then its only treating the symptoms and not the cause. I now have to wait to find out when the operation will be The decision is the worst bit Dolly looks at me with those big, trusting brown eyes and I will always try and do the right thing by all of my dogs, but as much as I'm hopeful that the operation will cure Dolly, there's a huge doubt that I could be agreeing to an operation that could kill her Another one here who thinks that you've made the right decision, however a difficult one it is. Like you're saying before, if you're just treating her with meds you'd be treating the symptoms and not the cause, and inevitably that'd be what'd kill her in the end. You're taking a risk, but with a good chance that Dolly will come through just fine and will continue to have a good few years of a great quality of life. Having the great life she's having as it is, I'm sure that if you'd be able to ask Dolly what she'd want she'd totally agree with you that she'd much rather be having a shot at continuing to enjoy her life in better health than she has now for you though because you must be feeling a bit confused and for Dolly Doodle who probably isn't That sums it up pretty well! I'll be thinking of you both
Wendbert
Thank you I've not heard from Malcolm so have rung and left a message. I know the operation is going to be a big risk but Dolly had such a good weekend, going on long walks both days and running around with Wiggle just brought home how much she loves life. I know she'll need to have 6-8 weeks recovery after the op but if it gives her the chance to have as many more years as possible, then its a chance I have to take. Wendbert
I've spoken to Malcolm. He's spoken to Davina the soft tissue specialist and she said Dolly is an interesting case She doubts it's a foreign body to be where it is as it shouldn't be able to get through the oesophagus, but obviously can't be 100% certain. She said that from looking at the scans, there is a 50/50 chance of finding/removing the necessary tissue to stop the obstructions. Going on Dolly's current good health, she'd not expect the operation to be life threatening and chances of losing Dolly during surgery are slim, but again no guarantee's until she's there. We're going back on Friday for xrays and hes going to try and get her booked in for next week..

I think that's a really good way to look at it Says she, sat in the comfort of it not being my dog. There's a risk with any GA/op isn't there, but you are doing this to give Dolly the best possible chance of having a full and long life and as you say, that's a chance you have to take, you are putting her first We will all be sending oodles of good thoughts for Dolly and for you
Wendbert
Thank you Malcolm has just called again. He spoke to Davina and she's suggested either next Tuesday or the Tuesday after. She is suggesting that rather than doing a sternal split, due to the mass being nearer the spine that she and another surgeon would each go in on via a side each, so in between Dolly's ribs. Malcolm said that there's no more risk and that the ribs can be stretched apart ok but that they may need to remove a rib but if thats the case, they can stretch the remaining ones in place to cover the gap Apart from Wiggle being due for a checkup on Tuesday next week I can do either appointment so he's hoping to confirm tomorrow. snow
Actually Wendy the going in between the ribs or even having one removed sounds a better option than the chest crack - heres hoping this is all behind you soon and Dolly is on the way to a long and healthy life
