  1. I would keep it covered until it heals over, to prevent infection getting in.
  2. I have not found garlic to be effective with ticks. ask your vet about Advantix. It is a spot on as well but my vet uses it rather than frontline. You can also get Frontline spray from your vet which kills ticks, but may not be of any use on a a nose. Neem oil is supposed to repell ticks. There is a shampoo and a powder to use on bedding. https://www5.securelybuy.com/neemgenie/index.htm
  3. Take all your information with you as vets/nurses do not seem to know very much about dalmatians.

    Dumbbells

Jenny Watson and Sandra McIntosh used to sell them. Sadly neither are aroubd the shows now. I will ask on the obedience site and see if anybody has them now. Yes, for some dogs, they did work.
  6. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think at the end of the day we all would. When my dally suffered a blocked bladder my vet just said' We'll have to order special food for him, does he eat wet or dry?' My response was that he was fed raw and I wanted to continue with a raw diet. She immediately admitted she knew nothing about a raw diet, but perhaps the vet nurses would, as they had had nutrition training. I bet I know who they got that from! It was a case of 'on your own head be it'. I contacted other dal owners and was able to get help from them. Hovis has continued on his adapted raw diet for over a year and , so far, has been fine. I also know someone whose miniature poodle was so lethargic on a prescription diet, that she stopped feeding it. The little dog bounced back and lived happily for several years.
  7. I found that thread but it is about Struvite crystals, which are totally different from Urate crystals. You also get oxalate crystals. They are all different and require different treatment Thanks for that. I'll have a look
  8. Many of us do not use dog foods made by certain companies for ethical reasons. But, if your dog developed a condition which your vet said required that you feed a prescription diet, which was made by one of these companies, what would you do?
  9. He will hungry on that diet- dals are large, muscley dogs. Check with your vet, but you may be able to bulk it up with veg. The post on private homings for Dell, a dally who has had an operation to remove stones, states that he can have Burns maintenance. Perhaps you could ask your vet to look into that. You can get the prescription diets from the online chemists, usually at a cheaper price than from the vets
  10. Assumimg we talking about a dally The Dalmatain Club of America have a list of the purine levels in foods http://www.thedca.org/purines.html You need to feed low purine as much as possible. You could use any of the low purine list. Cheese, boiled egg, cubes of bread. My dally had a blockage last year due to uric acid crystals- peculiar to dallies. He is on a raw diet which I have adjusted to mainly chicken, turkey, tripe, cottage cheese, eggs, veggie mush. He gets pieces of dry bread- which he loves- as a treat. I sometimes use tiny pieces of cooked cocktail sausages- courtesy of Tesco, small pieces of cheese. Sardines and liver are definite NO. It is very important to that he drinks plenty to flush out any small crystals that form. I add a cupful of water to Hovis' meals - like adding milk to ceareal, not mixed in, to make sure he drinks plenty.
  11. What kind of crystals. There are different kinds and treatment is different for each kind
  12. When you say 'meat' do you mean beef or all meat There are the alternatives of chicken, turkey, rabbit, lamb, tripe

    Barf

I am a member of the raw feeding forum [email protected] and there is someone from Dublin on the list. If you join, she may be able to help you
  14. another happy barfer here. My dals excema disappeared. Other pro's clean teeth small poops - better for clearing up. I know what I am feeding If introduced gradually you shouldn't have any digestive upset. Your dog's digestion needs to adjust to the new food. Stronger digestive juices are needed to digest raw feeding so you need to allow this to happen. But, please do your research before feeding this way. It is not difficult, but not the same as putting some kibble in a dish. There are lots of raw feeding sites- do a search on Google for 'barf, raw meaty bones or raw feeding dogs' There also raw feeding forums where you can information and help. On this site you can download Tom Lonsdales two books for free http://www.rawmeatybones.com/ A good book, which is short, easy to read is Kymythy Schultze's book, "The Ultimate Diet - Natural Nutrition for Dogs & Cats". It's available from Amazon. And Billinghurst's The Barf diet It can be very helpful if you can visit someone who feeds raw and actually see it happen
  15. dalmatians and dobermans also cannot sit with their bums on the ground unless they stick their legs out to the side or rock back on their cheeks. There is a small space between them and the ground. Deerhounds also have the same long back legs which prevent them from sitting right down.
  16. I think the police offer this as an alternative to going to court. ( saves them a lot of hassle) If the owner does not agree to hand over the dog, the case will have to go to court and the dog's future decided there. Depending on what act is used for the prosecution, legal aid may not be available. I think the police can get a warrant to take the dog into custody until the court case, if necessary.
