gooster
... Of being called back to the hospital for further tests after a mammogram? Just had a call from my dad, mum had a mammogram last week for the first time, and today has had a letter to go back for further tests. She is really really upset about it, as for some reason it has always been her biggest fear that she will die of breast cancer, so to get this letter has worried her senseless. It doesn't help that the appointment is the day before we are supposed to be going on holiday for 2 weeks, so that may have to be cancelled now, as I can't see her enjoying a holiday with the worry of any potential treatment hanging over her. I have said to dad that there is a high chance that they might not have got a good enough image to grade it, which is why she may have to go back. That happens quite frequently with the diabetic screening service I am involved in at work. However, I am still really worried for her that there may be something wrong. So, does anyone have any experiences about this? I appreciate it is quite a personal topic, so if people would rather PM me that's fine
blackmagic
I have been called back twice. The first time they took another mammogram and then I was checked by ultrasound. The operator could not get anything on the ultrasound so they did another mammogram to check where they should look. Again nothing showed on the ultrasound. The mammograms were then checked by two doctors and I was told by the nurse that everything was okay. I received a letter confirming this about two weeks later. the next mammogram had no follow up, but after the last one , last year , I was called back again. They took another mammogram and followed up with an ultrasound. This time they got a result on the ultrasound, but called the head guy to look at it. He decided to do a biopsy. That was followed by a meeting with the ' breast nurse' who answered any questions and explained what would happen next. She did confirm that what they had found was the same as they had looked for before. My husband was brought through for that meeting. As we live 100 miles from the hospital she arranged to phone me when she got the results in two days time. Fortunately, it was diagnosed as a fibro.. something which is benign and needs no treatment. Again this was followed up with a letter confirming and advising to attend for the next mammogram as normal. My sister was called back after hers last year but it was because the machine on the mobile unit hadn't worked. She was annoyed that they didn't say that in the recall letter and save her worrying. A friend was called back and found to have a cyst. It was picked up again at the next mammogram and she had the cyst removed privately after that. I don't know what your area is like but in this area , if you need treatment you are dealt with within two weeks. I hope everything goes well for your mum. gooster
Thank you Mum had it in the local PCT health centre place, I don't think it was in a mobile unit She is going to Wythenshawe hospital for her next appointment, which from doing a bit of google, seems to be one of 5 specialist units in the country, so I suppose she is going to be seen by some of the best people. I remember when my gran had similar problems, she got told on the same day that everything was ok. That was at Tameside Hospital though.

Karen
It might just be that they want to get a clearer image or an image from a different angle. I've had further tests after a mammogram - an ultrasound and a biopsy. What they found was benign fortunately, but if there is something sinister there it's surely got to be better to find and treat it promptly than not know. gooster
Thanks guys, still not spoken to mum, but sent a message to my dad today suggesting if they want to postpone the holiday till the end of August when it is all out of the way and mum can relax, that's fine, and they can just go together (mum works in a school so is off till September, and dad has his own business, so is flexible about time off). Not heard back since, but have been busy all evening.

suzeanna
I've been called back after a mammogram because they needed a clearer pic of one area, it was fine..and twice after smear tests, once because they hadn't got enough cells and I can't remember why the other one, those were ok too. Tell your mum to try not to worry too much, from being in my teens I was convinced I was going to die by the time I was sixty...that was five years ago and I'm still here. gooster
Thanks guys, her appointment is tomorrow afternoon. She has been feeling ok this week, been keeping her busy. Today she has been putting up shelves in my tack room at the farm Still planning to go on holiday, but I haven't packed any clothes yet - just in case I have bought her some watering can lights for the awning on the caravan, that cheered her up

gooster
Thank you all for your positive thoughts. Mum has just phoned me to say all is well. She had another mammogram and an ultrasound scan and it was all fine She said they were all really nice, and despite arriving 40 minutes early, she was seen within 10 minutes. Apparently they had seen an anomaly on the first screening, which was why they called her back, but all was fine today. So again thank you all for all your support
