Mattie is a sweet Staffy girl who is about 12 years old. Poor Mattie has had some rough times in her life and she came in to Oldies Club care very underweight, neglected and in generally poor condition. We took her in from a desperate put-to-sleep situation and so she is a very lucky girl to have lived to tell her sorry tale.

These are photos of Mattie as she was when we took her in: a poor, pathetic-looking little thing.

Neglected, starved little Mattie

Mattie has been in her foster home in Northamptonshire for a couple of months now and she is doing very well there. She has gained some weight and condition and has slotted into family life easily. She really enjoys her walks too, although her new owners will need to be patient as she loves to take her time, sniffing each blade of grass!

She is very sociable with people and with dogs and cats. She’s also living with children in her foster home and would be fine to live in a busy household as nothing seems to faze her. However, because Mattie has known what it is like to be hungry, she is understandably a little obsessed with food and so she may snatch when given treats. Mattie has been fine being left for a few hours.

In summary, Mattie is a real sweety and does not ask for much — just plenty of food and a walk every day. Her foster carer finds it hard to believe what Mattie has been through as she is so friendly with everyone she meets.

Snoozing with her friends

More snoozing and socialising!

Mattie has been fully vet-checked and has been vaccinated, microchipped and flea and worm treated. Because Mattie was a stray, we don’t know whether she’s been spayed or not. If she comes into season, her new owner must be prepared to have her spayed, at the Oldies Club’s expense.

Mattie had a few old-lady lumps and bumps which have been removed by the vet. She has also had a chest x-ray that proved to be all clear. The vet was impressed with Mattie’s teeth and said they are very good for her age. She is a little deaf and has early stage cataracts but this does not seem to bother her. Mattie is on rimadyl once a day for general stiffness and some arthritis in her knees.

You really can’t beat a relaxing snooze in the sunshine!

  • 1 month later...

We had a lovely sounding potential home for her, but very sadly the lady's other dog is quite seriously ill and it's not clear now if/when she may be able to take Mattie, so Mattie is still looking.
