So sorry to hear this :(

Do you know where he will be having the surgery? My greyhound, Daisy and lurcher Ben both had spinal surgery at a specialist vet in Castle Donington. Can't priase him highly enough, not sure where you are, but I can get his details you want me to.

Just got back from picking Merlin up, the good news it is were the spine joins the hips but it is bad. You can see the the disc pressing on the spinal cord on the xrays. This is usually a successful operation, because there is only the back legs and tail left on the spinal cord.

The bad news, I have to be careful with him until the operation or he could loose all movement from that disc down.

I don't have to put him on crate rest but do have to make sure he doesn't do anything very active. Not difficult with a Greyhound. Only on lead walking for 10 minutes twice a day and no jumping etc.

Depends on the infection when they operate, but he wants it sooner rather than later. Normally it is a 6 week course of antibiotics for infection were it is, but he is hoping he can operate before then.

The xrays are going away for someone else to look at them just to make sure he has it right.

The vet seems to think it hasn't been done very long but as he never runs, he won't leave my side, I can't understand how he has done it.

Brenda,

Thank you for that kind offer, I am very lucky, my vet is also an Emergency Vets and Animal hospital and the vet who he saw this evening also does these operations.

Joachim Proot at www.caldervets.co.uk will be doing the operation, Gracie has been with him since he came to the practice and he is very good. He showed me Merlin's xrays and explained them all, showed were the disc was pressing on the spinal cord. He even had a model of the part of the spine and were the pelvis joined on.

I'm so sorry to hear about Merlin but everything sounds good for the poor lad. Typical groo though, they mask the big problems so well!

My boy screams like a banshee at any minor threat to his feet or ankles but give him a serious problem, like a recent bite to his neck and - nothing.

They are persevering dogs and I am sure Merlin will recover well. My thoughts are with you both as you go through this though.

Marie
