supafrisk
I would like to add to Emma's comment regarding breeding etc and say that even if she passed criteria I would be uncomfortable rehoming a mare to the lady in these circumstances. Trallwm farm
My thoughts exactly but if you are not used to the responsibility of homing horses to be blinkered to all the pitfalls and problems.
DanishPastry
did she ask specifically for a mare? Send her a gelding, tell her she can breed it all she likes Sorry, not trying to make little of the seriousness here. I have to say, the more details you give about this person, the more I understand (although not necessarily agree 100%), but you started out only giving an email and very few details. I am also of the believe that being rude to people will not ever convince them that you are right and they are wrong. This is the major reason why I am not a dog trainer for instance. I have pretty okay skills with dogs, but absolutely appalling people-skills, as you may have noticed lol I believe in order to "win people over" and get them to realize how BIG the need is for doing more to promote animal welfare, including rescue work, you have to include them into your world, from where they are at now, and not wait till they have conformed to standard so to speak, as it simply may never happen. If no one informs people, and get them INVOLVED, how are they to know? Seeing it in writing here and there is not always enough, just think of how often we read about how many child soldiers are in Africa, or how many children in India are effectively "sold" as slaves, to work of loans (and I use the term loosely) their parents have had to take to stay alive? Do we all actually get off our backsides and do something about it? I know I don't. By only including people who fit your ideal standards 100%, you can easily end up preaching to the converted. supafrisk
TBH, regarding the rudeness, it actually sounds like the woman wasn't expecting to be asked questions about her horses and there does sound like there was more to it. Can I ask Lesley, was the woman happy to answer your questions etc? (Not defending anyone's actions btw, just wondered because it seems a bit like she took offence to being asked)
Trallwm farm
TBH, regarding the rudeness, it actually sounds like the woman wasn't expecting to be asked questions about her horses and there does sound like there was more to it. Can I ask Lesley, was the woman happy to answer your questions etc?(Not defending anyone's actions btw, just wondered because it seems a bit like she took offence to being asked) In answer to Anne we always make it clear in the first instance that we are an animal sanctuary and that we find homes for horses not horses for people. She answered all normal questions untill the instructor refs which we dont home without especially when there is a child involved. She then said she was teachng the child and I explained the child would require qualified lessons and then a reference so she then said her business partner was qualified. I then asked about Vets refs and she wanted to know why so I told her. Untill then she kept quiet about breeding and dealing because its clear on the website our policy. Unfortunately we do get some fantastic ponies in that people think they can use to make money out of but our rules are the same and we only home to families but if its a games pony or watever then they kids can use the pony for whatever it specialises in. We have many horses and ponies that have represented thier country etc. She then said she couldnt get a ref from her vet because her dog hadnt been registered long so I said sorry no so she then said she could but it was for her 9 horses and I asked if any of them were suitable for the child. Just like dog collectors you get pony collectors and we dont want a stranded pony when someone cant afford feed bills in winter. She said 6 were foals and I said are you a breeder and she said no but we just let our mares have foals so I said Im sorry but no so she said but I bought some of these to sell on and I said you are a dealer as well then and she said no and as she had chopped and changed and obviously was a dealer and breeder she then argued that she shows the ponies before selling them so I explained why we dont home to breeders because we have to stand by our ethics and possibly anything she bred could end up here being fed by us. So she started arging and I simply said Im sorry but no. There were too many ifs and buts. I got an abusive phone call a few weeks ago from the mother in law of a bloke who wanted a shetland for a child barely two years old. I told him he was not using us to risk his childs safety. Sadly people think that we are there to provide them with cheap ponies and they obviously have no idea the effort that goes into getting the right permanent homes for our ponies. DanishPastry
I do realize you must get the same type of people asking for horses as dog rescues have asking dogs. Martin could tell you for hours about the planks he has dealt with over the years lol. If you had given all this info in your first post, I doubt this thread would ever have developed into much of a discussion at all. Surely someone with a number of horses should be able to give a vet ref. Even if it just says that their horses are regularly vacced/wormed, in good condition and never have a sick day apart from that. If not, they are either negligent or have something else to hide. edited for spelling Edited September 2, 2007 by doggie mum
