  1. The article is unclear as to where the dog owner was....... If the dog owner was in the field as well, the farmer may be in the wrong regarding safe use of his firearm. Hes not in the wrong for shooting the dog though, a dog doesnt have to be actually chasing livestock to be worrying them, and a farmer has the right to shoot dogs that are trespassing in amongst his livestock. He was lucky i think to have been warned in the first place! Ive been in his shoes, i once allowed Rocky to worry livestock and BOY did he worry them - it was an accident of course, a field over the brow of a hill that used to be fenced in was now open - i couldnt see it, couldnt see livestock, allowed dog off lead. My fault entirely, dog found livestock, chased it, farmer came out WITH gun and threatened if i didnt get the dog immediately, hed shoot it. Fortunately he realised i wasnt very old, and HE yelled at rocky who stopped (i had been yelling and yelling..... no luck at all, Rocky was having WAY too much fun seperating out a ewe and chasing her down). He COULD have shot Rocky, hed have been legally within his rights to do so. I have NEVER let rocky off in a place i have reason to believe there may be livestock ever again. One warning is all i needed! its all anyone needs and one warning more than many would get! Poor dog to have such a stupid owner though!
  2. Ive got one, and persuaded two friends. Total honesty here - sometimes i find it a tad uncomfy to put in, that i think is because im very tense due to muscle cramps. Once situatued in me flue (), its totally fine, 100%, cant feel it, not bothered by it, totally happy. Again, ive had a few occasions where on first attempt, ive not been able to remove it - again thats tenseness - stop, chill for a minute, try again and its fine (and ive cut ALL the stem off mine as it wasnt comfy with stem on it). I absolutely would not go back to tampons or pads again, ever - not if you PAID me! Ive used it at night, during the day, at home , out, HORSE RIDING (sorry ive not been bunjee jumping, roller blading towed by dogs, parachute jumping etc yet....) Not one leak, no spillage (as Clazook sez, tisnt floppy!), seriously no hassle at all! Both the people ive recommended it to are chuffed with it as well and wont go back to other methods now.
  3. Dunno..... Actually, yes i do. As long as they breed to improve the breed, breed to keep a pup to show rather than breed to sell the lot, complete all health checks, offer lifetime back up for the pups etc etc, then i think that isnt a problem. Turn it on its head, rather than a rescue who breeds (which is seen as bad), how about a breeder who rescues....... Surely, if every breeder also did their fair share of rescuing, wouldnt that be a good thing? Or is the thinking that if you breed you shouldnt rescue, and then where are we? Surely people rescuing is a good thing as long as its done properly?
  4. On another forum i post on, a user is trying to find a home for her 15 month old St Bernard bitch. Ive contacted her and shes said if i can find help to do so.... Shes based in kent (dont know where), and although on the forum shes asking £350 for the bitch i think this is to ensure a good home, rather than a serious intention to earn some cash. She doesnt want the dog to go to a rescue who uses kennels and id agree with her thats not idea for a young bitch. Are there any rescues out there willing to help her or take this dog on to a foster home? At the moment she is in touch wtih a rescue (dont know which one), but they have suggested she try to rehome her herself so she doesnt end up kenneled. She is willing to have the bitch spayed although this may not be appropriate right this minute - reason for rehoming is shejust doesnt have the time this bitch requires, again another reason shed let the bitch go to a rescue who uses foster homes. Pwease someone? Although the owner has absolutely the best of intentions, the forum shes advertised her on is a horsey one not a doggy one, and there are rather a lot of thoroughly unsuitable homes there (people who would quite happily keep her outside on a chain all day etc).... Em
  5. I was brought up to ask to leave the table, to say please and thankyou, hold doors open for people, not swear (although at home we were allowed to say sh1t should we hurt ourselves...... and words like crap, bitch, arse, were not considered particularly foul, of course that was dependant on the company and the context.....) A great deal of attention was paid to manner, tone of voice etc, and there was plenty of fairly painful punishment if that type of rule was broken (my mother had an incredibly, lightning fast slap across the face in her). As a result of our, whilst not perfect behaviour, but our understanding of the rules, we were taken to places and welcomed in places small children generally aren't (the 80s being a lot less child friendly than these days if you think back). One thing i specifically wasnt taught by my parents was teh 'respect your elders' line.... and thats one i never liked coming from teachers etc.... the concept that a child is a second class citizen... everyone should be treated with respect, you shouldnt treat anyone in a way you wouldnt wish to be treated yourself.... i could never get to grips with why I as a child, was 'lesser' than an adult. (although that is the common opinion as proved the number of times adults would push in front of me in queues, talk down to me as if i was lacking in the mental department, manhandle me, grab my hair (to exclaim over its thickness or curliness) or make personal comments....... ) Probably explains why as a kid i was frequently in trouble - i respected those who deserved respect, i didnt respect those who treated me like a moron..... oh well IF i were to have kids now, i see no reason why i wouldnt instigate similar rules (although obviously minus the physical punishment meted out by Mother....). Em
  6. I have to say, my OH and housemate are occasionally lined up for an ass kicking..... Because they see one of the dogs needing a wee and then dont do anything (and i dont mean im sat on my ass watching, like if im in the bath or on the phone., or ive come home, theyve been in with the dogs and all four are desperate for a wee).... I line em up and ask them how THEY would feel if they had to be taken to the toilet every single time for the entire duration fo their lives........ how would it be if THEY were desperate and were told 'no, you have to wait i cant be bothered right now'........ They generally get it but men being men, it needs a few repetitions. Lady next door to me wont walk her dogs as then theyd get dirty..... why that would bother her i do not know as both are kept in her outshed and never allowed into the actual house. Grr.
  7. LOL - love how you matched the pics up to the words in thes ong...... teehee!
  8. Woo go Seff! Hope he enjoys his new, somewhat lumpfree life now Kaffy! I may have to go start the Seff Floppychops Sulkyface Appreciation Society..... queue up now to join please folks!
  9. Update on my finger - it dunt hurt now, i havent got blood poisoning and my tetanus is up to date. Fink i can go back to sewing leather tomorrow (it still hurts if i try grab a needle with that finger as the needle lies in the exact same direction as the cut..... ouchy). Fanking yoo for your concern if not really about me but about yer stuff!
  10. Er, five - and does ' i sucked it' count as properly cleaned?
  11. Tricky one that Bebe.... my mum lived in SA for a few years waayyyyyyy back in the late 60s. She had a houseboy, and a 'lady who does' who between them pretty much covered cooking, cleaning and gardening and fixing stuff. Whats fair? No i suppose the 13 year old, like my mums 15 year old houseboy, would have preferred to be riding around on ponies, etc.... but that wasnt an option. Would they have prefered to earn nothing whilst someone else did a job they could and would willingly do? My mum and her then husband didnt need a houseboy or a cook, but as new people moving in they inherited the staff from the previous tenant, and were inundated with people offering to work for them. The wages they were paid were good for the work they did. I know my mums houseboy, John, would also ask to read my mum and her partners books whenever he had time off, which of course he was welcome to - an opportunity he wouldnt have had otherwise. I personally wouldnt feel comfortable in the same situation with 'staff' but then i wouldnt feel comfortable living here in the UK and having staff. People do though, and i dont think the thousands of 'ladies who do' feel used, do they?
  12. Ok.... my finger..... Before you look, i know i know its barely worthy of this thread. But UNDER that blood is a small yet really really deep cut - cut myself with a saddlers knife - these are devastatingly horrifically sharp as they have to cut through leather, AND id just re- sharpened it..... this knife is so sharp it cuts through really thick harness leather like butter..... So it cut through my fingertip as if it wasnt there..... Looks like nowt though! hurts!
  13. Hes lying......... Im not nice at all! He is however, very blonde, that is true.
  14. In two minds - yay for them being able to act a lot sooner than they previously have..... Boo if they dont sharpen up their knowledge on various aspects of animal welfare (on another forum just discussing that a great many peoples horses would, according to the RSPCA's website, be classed as 'neglected'..... because they dont have a field shelter, they dont have loads of fresh grass - the RSPCA site says horses should be fed 'fresh hay', apples carrots and corn.....!!!!! Somewhat out of date that, fresh hay should never be fed, horses with or prone to laminitis need to stay away from lush grass......... etc etc) I hope we dont see them barging in with all the powers to do loads of things...... and not the knowledge to make that sensible.
  15. Eek - sorry id NEVER clip off. As Helly says, it makes the coat go fluffy and tufty and that means it matts more easily and traps muck more as well. Wont your groomer trim and strip? That way you can thin out th ecoat, trim it shorter with scissors but avoid the damage clipping does to the coat - its a little more work but the bonus is it doesnt require expensive clippers so you can learn to do it yourself. You also then let the dog keep his/her ability to regulate its own temperature - a clipped coat wont do that any more where a thinned one will.
  16. Seff: I iz handsome boy me, velly handsome, velly distinguished'.... Connie: You iz got yer knackers on show, thats not velly distinguished at all!
  17. Predictable - hmmmm, maybe, i dont know. Is it fair to say its predictable when a really clearly good dog wins? Fabulous Willy is a good dog, hes ALWAYS been a good dog and 2 years ago, he was a good but somewhat immature dog. Now hes great, hes mature and he has the confidence that shows through in the ring. Of the dogs there for BIS, Willy was for me the only one who was not only happy and confident, he actually ENJOYED what he was doing. I was suprised the maltese didnt take reserve but also not surprised that the terrier did... Moans? Id like to see this dogs strutting their stuff on a looser lead tbh, if its THAT good then you shouldnt need to hoik its front paws off the floor to make it look like its really striding out. General moan - i have NEVER before noticed so much holding of chunks of dogs faces as the judges are going over them - show dogs are supposed to have impeccable temperaments - yes, of all the shows (bearing in mind that in real terms crufts is just a show its actually NOT more special than any other Champ show), Crufts is a very very long day with more than the usual amount of hassle, so dogs are more likely to be a bit knackered...... even so, do they have to be held like that, are they all going to bite the judges hand off? Do they all hate being gone over THAT much? Odd.
  18. Harry's lookin gooooood..... Mich is lookin.........concerned. Top tip here..... the more you cut harrys coat the worse it will matt cos the undercoat and top coat will be the same length...... use a coat king which will thin a leetle, and cut a leetle, and use thinning scissors as well nad you wont get the choppy look(in fact you could also use them to keep on top of his trim, and your parents might not notice what you are up to!).... and the coat will be less likely to matt (it will still matt a bit though).... also if there are matts, cut carefully up them, vertically rather than straight across as you can often tease them out saving chopping a big line..... a hyooge handful of cheesey treats or something and Harry should forgive you! Can you tell ive been hacking lumps out of my friends collie x and also her cat lately?? grr.
  19. From what ive read of the film - i think anyone going to see it PURELY for DR's botty would quite probably be in for a bit of a shock, its NOT about a 'nice' subject at ALL. Yes...... tis wrong and foul and mucky to consider the prospect of rudery and Harry Potter........... Ill say no more
  20. Ive got frosted windowfilm - because dogs cant see out they dont scratch at it or sit up on the windowsills when im out. Ok, i cant see out either but thats not a problem (the view is of a row of shops, stunning.....). Lets loads of light in though, so its fine with me. The only real difference its made is if i fwant to see if the shop is open i have to get OFF my backside and open the front door to see.
  21. LOGIEBOGIE! Four, blimey time flies when you are a hurtling looning maniac! Happy birthday Logan, from me an Rocks an Dilly (sure abby and ptep say hi too despite never having met you ) Em
  22. chuckey - your friends bitch should be eating anything she wants right now, anything at all (yes, even if that means shes eating prime steak or flipping Whiskas!)..... and she should be eating as much of it as she likes, as and when she likes. (puppy food IS good though). If the last two weeks of pregnancy are demanding..... the first few weeks of feeding a litter are beyond belief - hence the skinnyness.
  23. Cor there ARE people on here with similar tastes in obscure music..... Just cant pick a favourite album - Levellers always come in my personal top ten albums - Nightwish also... GOGOL BORDELLO! rar! 'START WEARING PURPLE WEARING PURPLE, START WEARING PURPLE FOR ME NOOOOOOWWWWWW".... ahem..... scuse me.... I also liking muchly, Something for Kate, and Grinspoon. And oooooooh so many others!
  24. Why do we like the dogs we do? Hell could freeze over and i wouldnt consider rehoming a labrador. Not the dog for me, they dont suit my life, i dont 'get on' with them, they would not be the dog id look for. I wouldnt turn one away on the doorstep, id foster and find a rescue place or a home for one, but i wouldnt keep one. Does that make me bad? Ive done the same with a couple of terriers, again, small terriery things are not the dog for me. Tall pointy things are - when i got Abby i was actually discussing a deerhound puppy with a reputable breeder. Abby came along instead. If id not been considering another dog, i wouldnt have got abby as i wouldnt have mentioned the idea to anyone and id not have heard of her. Next time round, i will buy a deerhound from a breeder. Probably thats a very selfish thing, but i have three dogs out of four that are rescues (4 is dill and i bought HIM directly due to rescue nastiness, i passed a home check then failed it as i was thought to be friends with the 'wrong' person. As it happens i wasnt but too late really....). Perhaps i should have not bought dill and sat here lurcherless due to someone elses bitchyness. But i didnt - these days i would have gone about things differently i guess. After that, i will have another rescue, and i intend to have rescues around as long as i can have dogs (and that OUGHT to be another fifty years). I dont think id buy a pup if the breed was common in rescue, unless that breed was a particularly difficult, ie not a dog for someone with no experience of the breed.
  25. A Mister Twister - get thee to wilkinsons for one or three. They are totally ace and my lot and Leela and Reb love them as well, may well replace the shoe thing as they are rope AND fluffy toy so quite heavy and good for shaking about. Em
