  4. Thanks.... will keep his collar on him 24/7 now. Spoke to the vet this afternoon, due to not seeing improvement since Saturday from the Metacam. The nurse had said that improvement should be seen in 48 hours, whereas today the vet said to give it a week as i say, I don't want to take him off it before I'm certain that its not working, so will keep him going on that. Am now wondering if I shouldn't give the Synflex until we've seen whether the Metacam is working I don't want the Metacam to "take credit" for the Synflex working, or vice versa.... In himself, he's happy as ever. He seems to be going against all my "he is a terror with other dogs" comments; he made friends with 3 westies in the park yesterday! one of which was 16 weeks old, not sure if Osc knew what to make of it (are Bioflow and magnetic collars essentially the same? is Bioflow just a brand name or do you think there's a real difference...?) sorry for so many questions in this thread
  5. Well its arrived, along with the Synflex The Syn-flex is straightforward enough and have started him on it today (giong to double-dose as suggested for the first 10 days), but just wondering re the collar; how long are you meant to leave it on? Is it just supposed to be used when out on walks, or can it be kept on throughout the day (or even night?). I want Oscar to have the best benefit possible, so this makes me think he should wear it as much as possible, unless anyone knows of any reason why not...? Also, does anyone know how long it should be before I see any kind of improvement from either / both of these please? Oscar has been on the Metacam since Saturday and so far has suffered no obvious ill effects, although I have to say, i can't see any improvement yet (and the vet nurse said we should see "significant improvement" within 48 hours.....) I'm going to give it a day or so more, just cos Osc was out and about with me in the garden on Sunday and so could be stiffer than usual cos of this.... don't want to take him off it before giving it a proper chance to work... any advice gratefully received
  6. Oh Digby you are just . Poor baby - what you've been through . Thank goodness for Mason and all humans concerned. Sending you lots of improving every day thoughts Any chance of a linky to the paper piece when the article gets printed

  10. Oscar says he iz been a very gud boy and vat sardeen kake wud be luffly fanks anti mikayla You're welcome anytime!! Just give me a bell to check we're in - we don't go out much so most evenings / weekends are free! Well its been about 36 hours - he's had 2 doses of Metacam and although no massive improvement, though he has been wandering about, in and out of the garden quite about today and doesn't seem to be quite as wobbly. Vet said to expect "significant" improvement in around 48 hours..... (also, so far, no squits or puke, which are the main possible side effects we've been told to look out for...) Thanks for everyone's lovely comments, both here and on his pictures thread

    Lasso

Run free at the Bridge Lasso, :GroupHug: s for you
  12. Oh and just to add (cos a couple of people have mentioned it) that Oscar has a tin of sardines mixed in with his food once a week and a cod liver oil capsule once a week. Should perhaps up the cod liver, but think I've been told that too much can be harmful.... Thank you all for your good luck wishes and advice
  13. Well, he's had his first dose of Metacam this morning, and I'm watching him like a hawk for any sign of improvement or reaction.... I've ordered some Synflex and a magnetic collar, which should arrive early next week. Thanks for the reassurances - although there are some bad reports about Metacam, its easy to forget that for a lot of dogs it does help. Fingers crossed it will for Oscar. I've got some recent pics of him, but for some reason am having trouble downloading them at the moment will try again later.
  14. Yes definitely, I'm pretty sure this cold wet weather isn't helping him at all . I've just measured his neck for the mag collar (16 inches!!) and am trying to order Syn-flex and collar online but worldpay is currently down
  15. Thanks I'll definitely look into Synflex when his glucosamine runs out - it sounds really good! In the meantime, I've upped his daily doseage of glucosamine. I've also been looking online at metallic collars which could also help... When we saw Oscar on the OC website in October 2005, it said his age was around 14, so based on that, he is now around 16 and a bit. Apart from his legs, he is otherwise in good health - strong heart, kidney and liver functions fine. My OH has been away all week and arrived home late last night. This morning Oscar has been like a puppy - jumping around and giddy that his dad is back He has his good and bad days legs-wise. Osc weight 26.9kgs, and the vet has recommended i dose him as a 25kg dog and see how we go.
  16. Oscar seems happy in himself but in the last couple of months has slowed down considerably on his walks and around the house When we were last at the vets in September, we discussed his problems and the vet mentioned rimadyl and metacam, but i was reluctant due to the risks and some of the horror stories i've seen relating to both of these.... Oscar's been on glucosamine, green lipped mussel and rhus tox and although these all helped initially, he has been gradually getting stiffer and less stable on his legs. I took him to the vets this week and afte blood and urine samples, the vet said his kidney and liver functions are fine and he has prescribed us a medium bottle of metacam for him to try. This is really not a road I wanted to go down with Oscar, but have given the matter some serious consideration and don't feel we have much choice. I will continue with the gluco / glm and rhus tox but just wondered if you could please send good thoughts for my old lad - for no bad reaction to metacam and for an improvement to his old legs.
