Joe Passed Out

This morning Joe passed out I didn't see it but OH was there. It wasn't like a fit or like his previous episode of vestibulitus. Joe lost the use of his bladder and bowels and appeared to be unconcious for 2/3 minutes. He lay quietly on the floor for about half an hour then got up and had a drink of water. Afterwards he ate all his breakfast as usual.

I feel I should take him to the vet but there is nothing for them to see. What do others think please?

Bud had vestibulitis as well and a couple of times he blacked out - tended to be triggered by heat or if the weather was muggy like it is here now. I would just mop up while he was blacked out as he got distressed if he realised he had messed, then same as Joe he would just come round as if he had woken from a normal sleep and wander off to have something to eat.

Sorry to hear about Joe, it's so worrying when you don't really know what's wrong.

If it were one of mine I'd probably get him looked over to be on the safe side (but I am a terrible worry-guts with my dogs). If there's nothing obviously wrong at least you'd be reassured.

Big hugs for Joe Group_Hug_Emoticon.gif

Another thought - Bud used to get fluid build up in his chest - first time it was very obvious as he looked like an overstuffed cushion with a leg at each corner, but after that there was only slight swelling - with him it was regularly every 6 weeks and he went in for a drain (couple of times into heart sac rest of times in chest) and bounced home at lunchtime. This did not actually cause the blackouts but if Joe has similar it could possibly be a cause - the drains are an extreme treatment as normally it can be controlled with diuretics (but of course my boy had to go visiting his friend the specialist for treats so he had to be different!)

Thanks for your comments. I took Joe to the vet this afternoon and she said his heart (which has a slight murmur) sounded a bit muffled but his lungs were clear. She has arranged for him to have an xray and scan next Thursday to find out what is going on. He has some Fortekor tablets to take until then.

I feel it is going to be a long week until Thursday. :sad02:

I hope he's soon on the mend but would definitely pay a visit to the vet myself. They may have equipment that could help (eg CT scan or MRI?) or be able to refer you to a specialist even if they can't see anything at the time. There are some fact sheets here that may be of help / interest.

Sorry just seen your last post & that you have now already done so. Hope he improves soon.

sounds as if it could be fluid - remember fortekar well!

Bud had to be dramatic and have the fluid in his heart as well as chest and he had drains every 6 weeks regular as clockwork for about 1.5 years - as I said before most dogs have it controlled by drugs but even if it does get to a drain the process is simple - an ultrasound, sedation (he had the heart drains under sedation as well, no need for GA), drain, look round for treats, bounce around as if you are a young dog not a teenager, get picked up by your human cos the younger dogs are trying to rest......

Vets can do a lot with a dog with something wrong with their hearts, my Joe had a good quality of life for 18 months after he was diagnosed with an grade 4 heart murmour, leaking valve and an enlarged heart, it was so big it was pressing his windpipe onto his spine when he coughed. Joe loved to run and was able to continue running when out.

Good luck with Joe on Thursday.

Thanks for taking the time to reply especially after your recent emergency Mrs Mop, it's good to know that there is a lot the vets can do for heart problems. Joe has been getting a little slower lately but as he is 15 yrs old, the weather has been hot & muggy, and he suffers with arthiritus and a weak back end I thought that was the cause. However almost immediately after he collapsed he seemed brighter and he is more active too, whether the Fortekor tablets would have acted that quickly I don't know. We shall know more on Thursday.
