Dog Insurance

My beasts have been insured with More Than for a few years now. Como costs £32.99, Flo costs £33.99 per month. This year I had to claim for both of them for the first time - not huge claims, they were under £500 in total. I've just had their renewal notices and Como is now £52.52 and Flo £50.04.

I'm not happy. It seems like a big jump to me.

What do you pay?

Dex and Fleur are with More Than, Dex had one claim for no more than a couple of hundred prior to the renewal in December and his premium shot up from £33 to £49. That was before I'd claimed for his operation to have 2 lumps removed so I'd best start thinking about remortgaging the house

Max is with Marks and Spencer and his costs £33.99 a month for a nearly 9 year old dog. He's been with them for 5 years and had a couple of big claims for referals to specialists where it's cost them a few thousand quid a time.

The others are all with Axa and cost about £13-£15 a month. I've not really made much of a claim for any of them with Axa and they have all been with Axa for about 3 years.

I have been mooching for 2 days trying to find the right policy for Seth. I found a company which is ethical, supports charity and has very reasonable prices. Animal Friends Insurance. I have never heard of them, and am now having a search to see if I can find any problems with them. Direct Line appears to be the next cheapest.

I saw AFI on moneysavingexpert.com they look quite interesting!! I'm just going to have a look on a comparison site - not Go Compare because their tv ad makes me want to kill someone.

I have just looked up Axa pet insurance and it's got an even worse rating than Animal Friends, but there are only half a dozen reviews. If I had read those reviews before I took out the insurance, it would have put me off, but they have been with Axa for several years now and although I haven't made many claims, I've always found them good to deal with (had a bit of a quibble over Milly's amputation, but it was because the vet had written something in the notes which looked as if it may be pre existing, once he wrote to them they paid out). Once that was sorted they paid out very quickly (less than 2 weeks to settle each further claim) and I've always found the staff very helpful.

They've also recently increased their cover from £6k to £7k.

Wispa is with Direct Line and we have a very good deal though for some reason being Xbred means the premium is lower. No idea why as being a mix means she is capable of getting into as much trouble as a GSP, a sighthound and a collie all at once.

Mrs Mop has most of hers with Direct Line who have been very good through various illnesses.

One of the people on my GSP list had a bit of a problem with More Than because they counted a leg injury as an existing condition because a different leg had been injured for a different reason a couple of years ago. He seems to have won, but they are being awkward about physio treatment and won't cover it unless it is done by the same vet who did the main treatment, and he doesn't have physio facilities. So the dispute continues.

Direct Line insurance doesn't cover 3rd party unless you ask specially as I did, but you can have it and it is very reasonable.

i am going a bit cross eyed but its amazing when you pull up the small print and exclusions what you can find. Sainsburys have quite a list of excluded breeds. Some I would expect, some quite suprised me. Sinse when was a deerhound a high risk dog?

Are they prone to developing expensive to treat conditions?

all of mine are with petplan, diez is 9 and is a staff, she is about £30 a month, she has £4000 a year vets fees...renewed each year for life, the excess is probably about £80 per condition. i have claimed for thousands on each animal, my latest claim for laney was for £1200 paid no bother the one before that was £2000 again paid up no bother
