Insurance - Petplan/M&S

Both of my boys are currently insured with Petplan, but I've just had Finn's renewal through and Petplan want just shy of £20 /month ohmy.gif He's 3 and a crossbreed so this seems pretty expensive for their standard cover for £4000/condition and a £90 excess!

I will stick with it if it offers the best cover but I've heard M&S are good, and they are quoting me £12/month for £7000 cover and £70 excess.

My only concern is that Petplan cover conditions for life and I can't find anything on the M&S website about their policy on this.

Anybody have any advice/input? Or other companies?

Thanks flowers.gif

Bloomin insurance companies angry.gif I have no problem paying for the risks, but a 3 year old crossbreed is not a high risk and neither is an 8 year old greyhound! Makes me cross cos I don't think the companies are being fair (I know that's not their job, but it irritates me!!)

Hope Axa pay out nicely for Mollydog's leg flowers.gif

My policy for Nog is with M&S and we have premium cover which is £7k per condition for life - I pay a damned sight more than £12 for it tho at the moment its about £25 a month but when Nog turns 9 next year thats going to shoot right up not forgetting the fact we have already had over 5k off them so far for his broken leg so undoubtedly that will pad the premiums too but we'll have little option but to pay whatever it costs when the renewal comes through in December as otherwise the leg would be excluded from any new insurance company we went with and we can't take that risk. In addition when they reach age 9 the excess is £70 plus 20% of the total claim in our case this leg would have cost us £1200 even with insurance had it happened next year wacko.gif there are however some good points to bear in mind about M&S they will pay vets direct and have a good reputation with vets for fast no fuss payouts, they have paid out on our claim very fast and with no quibbles at all, they include cover for prescription diets which many policys don't, and they also cover hydrotherapy and accupuncture which some policies wont, on top of that they'll pay 30p per mile mileage if like us your vet has to refer you to a specialist vet hospital or practice - we can claim for 24 trips so far (but we're holding back on that until all the treatments done in case we run out of money on the policy).

Personally when we took the policy out we thought 7k of cover would be more than enough we never dreamed we'd ever need to claim that amount for vet bills .... and yet here we are having spent £5,500 in barely 7 weeks and still more bills to come, having had this experience I now would never consider a policy that doesn't pay per condition, for life and which didn't offer at least £7k of cover if not more, it might cost me more to have but if we hadn't had the cover the decisions we had to make over Nog's treatment would have been much more difficult. It's always a huge dilema balancing what you can afford against what level of cover is out there, and I know when Nog was first insured with tesco I think we only had about 3k per anumn cover and thought that was loads, had that been the policy in place when Nog broke his leg... it wouldnt have even covered the cost of the surgery. sad.gif

Mollydog's M&S policy shot up to 'unaffordable' on her 8th birthday. I went to Axa. Will let you know if Axa were any good shortly, I hope, as I have a large claim pending!

Me too, haven't heard a dickie yet and they received the claim on the 15th of this month :glare:

I'm still trying to decide which insurer to go with for Ben

their standard cover for £4000/condition and a £90 excess!

ooooo is it £4000 per condition?? i thought it was £4000 per year for vet bills  my petplan policy is for £4000 a year, my dog is a crossbreed and at the moment we pay £16.42 and a excess of £65, he is on their budget covered for life plan.he is due for renewal in february though but i am stuck with them anyway with all of my pets, one thing i will say for them though is that petplan pay promptly and have never queried any treatment the animals have had.

I have got Max with M&S and the cover is excellent. He is now 8 and having claimed over £6k in the past few years, his premium is at about £35 a month.

I have the rest of my lot with Axa - not quite as good, but still a good policy. Not as quick to pay out either and I had problems with a claim recently as the vets notes made it look as it it may be pe-existing (which it wasn't). However, after a letter from the vet to them, they have paid out without any further quibbles.

They are both life policies, ie will cover your pet for life :flowers:

My dogs have been with Axa for years now and I'm very happy to recommend them :) I've not had any massive claims for Kiera (fingers crossed!), but they were absolutely excellent with Mal last year and this year - just what you need when you go through the whole hell of a dog with cancer. They were always very decent with paying up, and I never had problems getting hold of them when needed. They paid out over £4500 for Mal without any trouble at all. When Mal passed away at the end of May, they cancelled his policy without any delay. In my experience they are as decent as an insurance company can be :)

Kiera is a crossbreed of about 6 years old, and I've just renewed her policy: £147 for the year - don't think that's bad at all :)

pumpkins on petplan budget life cover and hes four and a crossbreed and i pay £11.65 a month though i think i get a slight discount as i class as a petplan rep by offering the free 6 weeks insurance for all our rescues.

maude is insured with more than for £7,ooo vets fees but in addition to the excess i have to pay 10% of the total of each claim she is a 4 year old english bulldog and my premium is 24 pounds a month, petplan wanted a huge 54 quid

thanks folks flowers.gif

Both nog and mollydogs recent injuries have made me think about the cost of insurance and the level of cover - Billy is stuck with petplan due to pre-exisiting eye problems, but I do think I'll move finn. Looking at the policies one of the ones reccommended wanted an excess plus a percentage, but will look at the others

thanks again all knowing 'fugees!!!
