  1. What a babe! hope she finds something.oh for a bigger house with a secure garden..
  2. The emergency services save lives..every day of the year. I would not be here if it wasn't for them, the police who took over the scene, the firecrew who cut me free and the medical proffesionals who put me back together, people shouldn't waste time laying into people with a very difficult job..do you really think these people are paid enough for the risk they take? yes they know what they are signing up for but realistically do you think the 18k salary or whatever it is firecrew get these days is much comfort to a family who lost someone to the job? yet train drivers can bleet and whinge about working sundays and get paid a fortune..how is that fair? Yes mistakes happen..ambulances get delayed, police can be..less than helpful at times and sometimes medical staff have had a really bad day and don't have the resources to deal with what you need, but more than anything else they save lives, and I for one wouldn't want a country without them.
  3. Many thanks for aall the advice. you're all total stars
  4. Am after some advice really. I have had my dog kimi almost a year now (she's 7 yrs old) and i suspect she's had a lot of homes, at least 4 before me that i know of if not more, and i suspect over the years she's had some not so pleasant training used on her. She's very panicy if you pick up a stick/pole of any sort, even if she knows the person in question. She won't touch toys at all, is less than interested in food, and yes i have tried soo many different kinds..she will eat it just zero enthusiasm at all.She is fine to be left on her own, no sep anxiety or anything like that but i think every time i leave her with anyone else she thinks i'm abandoning her..she panics, wont let me out of her sight, looks back to me constantly, even if I am not leaving her with anyone and were just visiting. She's also hit and miss with other dogs for no reason whatsoever..that i can see, though i did a lot of work with her when she first came to me and she is much better now but still seems to have totally unprovoked reactions to some dogs. She does now do agility which she really really enjoys, and i discovered today a skate park is her new favourite plays to go but i've been thinking maybe there is something herbal i can give her that may make her feel a little more settled, or more convinced she's here for good.Just something to help her start over.I've been looking at the bach flower things but am a bit clueless. I don't think she needs the rescue remedy as that seems to be for much more severe cases but i'm unsure which individual flower i should try. I was thinking from what i've read maybe honeysuckle and possibly beech for her dog reactions, but could do with advice from someone with a bit of experience with these things. ta very much jemma & kimi
  5. social services sometimes step in, or if a dog is left alone and it's reported rspca inspectors will seize the animals. obviously thats providing the animals are reported. not sure there is any automatic system for alerting people if pets are left in a home when owner goes to prison.
  6. i got a vax cleaner a while back. it doesnt block up easy but it seems to have an issue with the height of the brushbar..it's either too close to the carpet that it sticks or too far away to clean properly, really frustrating. it did break the second time i used it and i have to say vax customer services were fanstastic at swapping it and getting a replacment out. give em a call.number should be on a sticker on the vac.
  7. really amazing to see so many involved. Brilliant work to the organisers.
  8. in the paperback..very bottom of page 100 to 101.chapter 4 method 1 explanation. i know this is meant to be really good and everyone seems to rave about it but i kinda feel upset by this. maybe there's a bit of the story missing or something in my copy.
  9. Am currently reading this book. I know about 4 years behind everyone else but hey. I'm just wondering if I read it wrong or misunderstood in some way, but does she really say she took a cat to the pound to be put to sleep because it pee'd on her cooker in the night? I know this book is meant to be very good, and it does seem very interesting but that just kind of leaped off the page at me and left a bad taste in my mouth. please tell me i read it wrong and it was one of her clients or something.
  10. my collie x furball just got a new collar, i got it cos it seemed very comfy for her, it's about and inch wide, made by ezy-dog and has a fabric covered neoprene collar. apparently it's called ezy dog neo collar, got hers on holiday from vets down there but they are on the net too http://www.innerwolf.co.uk/gbu0-catshow/Ez...CFd0B4wod-japLQ
  11. just been to crantock myself and it's lovely, my dog loved it. another one the other side of newquay is watergate bay, stunning beach, absolutly massive, has surf schools and things there and a pub/restaurant on the beach..which has a patio area where dogs are allowed even when serving food, even if wet and coated in sand! also has a carpark and some good coast walks.
  12. not wishing to put you off at all, i agree something needs to be done thats a bit more visible to the non dog community. just be warned there are groups of people who go out of their way to join various marches, look like they support the cause but they just go out to cause trouble, be it damage to property or out and out violence, or just making the cause look bad.
  13. my cats seem to need fleaing every time it's due. i use frontline, but particularly during summer there seems to be a never ending stream of fleas, i think it's from the sheer number of cats in the area, of which several are entire toms who've never seen a defleaer in their lives. It annoys me tho that my cats need doing so often and could really do with an alternative.
  14. have pm'd you now. if not already done this thread can be locked as these boys have gone home
  15. have tried pm'ing mod to ask for permission to post in the rescue section but not had any reply so please feel free to move this to correct area or delete if I am not allowed to post These dogs are with Leeds and Wakefield RSPCA. This is Tommy and Bobby Tommy and bobby are brothers, they are about 20 months old. They are staffy crossed with chinese crested so as a result have no fur whatsoever. They have been with us a while now but seem to keep getting overlooked..possibly due to their ermm..unique looks. As a result of having no fur they need extra care for their skin..regular moisturising, sunblock in the sun and warm coats for when it's cold. They are a really sweet pair, and love human company, they are very affectionate and get very excited when they get a fuss. they do need to be homed together as they pine for each other if seperated, and they would be best as only pets, as they are very close to each other and don't seem keen to let other dogs into the group. They walk great on lead and love their excerscise, and would be best suited to a home where children are 6 or over as when they get giddy their nails can be a little scratchy. if you think you could offer these boys a home, and you live within a reasonable distance and can come and meet the boys first please give us a call on 07743 773871 all potential adopters are homechecked, gardens must be secure and an adoption donation applies. All dogs are neutered, vaccinated, chipped, wormed and flead prior to rehoming As i said I know this in the wrong area but I am unable to post in the rescue section as yet although i have tried contacting mods on a couple of occasions. please move or delete this thread as necessary. www.rspcaleedsandwakefield.org.uk
  16. would like to say would only ever have a rescue but never say never, i wouldn't go to an unknown breeder but i have some friends that breed (very resposibly with all the health checks and things) and if they ever had a puppy whose new home (she reserves before breeding) had fallen through and it was looking unlikley to home, and if i was in a position to offer the dog what it needed..then i may consider taking one. however i do have a dog now, she's a medium cross..probably some collie and she was a rescue. she was 6 years old..allegedly, when i got her.She is a fantastic dog, and although she has had some issues with other dogs we have worked through them and she is a lot better now and officially un asbo'd from training classes.:-) when i was looking for her my req's were cat friendly or at the very least not cat agggressive as i have 3 cats and only a small house. ok to be left alone a while as i work full time and although my partner is usually home all the time he does occasionally work away from home so my dog ends up alone for a few hours. medium sized and up (sorry terrier peeps but they just aren't my thing) if possible some collie or gsd in them ( grew up with gsd's but well aware i couldn't give a full gsd the time it would need) good with people in general as my grandad occasionally looks after dog during day and he's not as young as he once was so dealing with a nervous/aggressive dog wasn't an option. i am contemplating getting a second dog, but my other half says no... but i have been thinking what it would need to be cat friendly or not aggressive child friendly (my best friend has a baby now and we spend a lot of time with her) ok to be left not too bouncy with other dogs as mine still doesn't like being jumped on, she's better with young dogs in general and seems to tolerate much giddier behaviour from them medium and up i would certainly look for a rescue that fit the bill first..but i am well aware the dog listed above is likley to find a home very quick in rescue and i think probably a better home than me as i don't have a secure garden at all, but my garden does back onto fields. my current dog arrived as a foster, tho i suspect as a specially selected foster as the rescue in question knew what i was looking for and she was a forever doggie within 24 hrs...she was very nearly a burmese cross but it ended up not coming in to the rescue..hehe
  17. I have to say, if you try break up a fight between dogs, especially big ones you are very likely to get bitten. not necessarily becuase the dogs are going for you but becuase they are so fired up and are striking out at the other dog then you get in the way.they are usually just aiming for the other dog but in the heat of the fight they don't distinguish so well. it's such a tragic end for all concerned though.
  18. yep really bad here still too..logs in much faster if i use the "click here if you do not wish to wait" option, used to be almost instant either way
  19. some vets...although it certainly doesn't appeal to me, will neuter females, particularly ferals or semi ferals very early..one vet i've heard of will neuter ferals from around 12 weeks...kinda scary.the same vet will neuter what he terms "shelter dogs" from 5 weeks if they are a big enough breed.
  20. i have oil filled radiators at home with inbuilt timers they are good. and not overly expensive, i have no other heating at all outside the lounge so it's my main heat source for most of the house..just don't try leaving clothes on them to try..they get very very hot..:-)
  21. am confused by several things but "rice in small quantities is ok"...i thought most good complete dog foods have a fairly high amount of rice and most vets reccomend rice as a good food for sensitive stomachs, obviously with chicken too. and commercial dog food would be no good either since it prob contains at least one of the listed ingredients..i know butchers isnt exactly great stuff but it has ham and mushroom flavour food, both are on the bad list.i know people need to be aware what's bad for a dog, and i'm sure there are dogs out there who have had severe reactions to all the above, especially the pennies and string but the list is a little scary.
  22. www.cornwall-cottages.biz going to the one called sunnyside in june, will let you kow how it goes
  23. never put a dog to sleep....no cos thy get my local vets to do it. i suppose you can technically say you've never put a dog down so long as you don't put the needle in yourself.extremly misleading though.
