  4. HELP STOP IRISH GOVERNMENT GRANTS TO GREYHOUND RACING Please read and support this appeal (below) from Greyhound Action Ireland. More info about the Irish greyhound racing industry and the campaign to put an end to it can be found at www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/iIreland.html Please feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message. ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] Sent: 12 August 2008 14:18 Subject: ACTION TO STOP Bord na gCon Government Grants/Letters/Email alert ................................................................................ ........................................ GREYHOUND ACTION IRELAND- NEWS FLASH / URGENT ACTION Many areas have to be tackled in our efforts to end Greyhound racing in Ireland. However none more vital than stopping the annual sports capital grants from the Irish government. These have amounted to 105,000,000 euro since 2001.As we are in a recession now surely Hospitals or the elderly would be more deserving causes. Contacting and appealing to Bord na gCon to stop the slaughter and suffering of Greyhounds that is inherent in racing is like asking the butcher to become vegan, maybe harder. If these SPORTS CAPITAL grants were withdrawn it would certainly go a long way towards making this ugly pastime less financially viable. Especially as on 31st August 2008 the Irish Government TAX EXEMPTION for both the HORSE and GREYHOUND BREEDERS will be removed, so these breeders will be tax liable (like everyone else). Read about the Grants at http://www.arts-sport-tourism.gov.ie/grant...ult.htm#grants1 The grants are awarded from the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism, Kildare Street, Dublin.2 Phone 01.6313800. 5. SHEFFIELD: THE MOST DANGEROUS DOG TRACK IN BRITAIN? Help us launch campaign against greyhound racing at Owlerton Below is a statement issued by Greyhound Watch, who carry out research into the dog racing industry. In view of this, we are appealing for volunteers to come forward, so that we can launch a campaign of leafletting/demonstrations against greyhound racing at Sheffield's Owlerton Stadium. So, if you live in or near the South Yorks area, and would be interested in taking part in such a campaign, please contact us, as soon as possible, at [email protected] or on 01562 700 043. Please feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message. Tony Peters, UK Co-ordinator, Greyhound Action ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STATEMENT FROM GREYHOUND WATCH The Most Dangerous Track in Britain? The latest research compiled by Greyhound Watch would suggest Owlerton Stadium, Sheffield, is one of the most dangerous greyhound tracks in Britain. Last year (07) stewards at Owlerton recorded greyhounds either lame or 'broke-down' 309 times excluding trials; a figure covering a total of 272 dogs. For 141 of the greyhounds it was to be their last race. It is likely many of the above dogs were later homed. It is also likely many were put-to-sleep. Racing Manager Lee Duffy has refused to give any figure for greyhounds PTS following injury but was adamant such action is only taken in extreme cases. A track official, however, has given information that would suggest otherwise: Dogs PTS at Owlerton last month (July 08) include Mail Madness and Work Of Art. The former fractured a wrist bone and Work of Art suffered a hock fracture in a trial. Both injuries are very common within greyhound racing and treatable. Both, however, are slow to heal and likely to impair the animals track time. As a result, greyhounds that incur this type of injury are usual 'put-down'. It is also thought the total figure for greyhounds injured at Owlerton last year is far higher than 309. Injuries in trials forms a significant proportion of any such figure and Greyhound Watch believe track stewards failed to indicate many injuries sustained. And race results to date, point towards an increase in injuries for 2008. In July alone stewards recorded 37 greyhounds lame and 6 not finishing but with a race time not given for 19 runners the latter figure is likely many more. There is, however, no such thing as a safe track and the number of injuries as a percentage of races held will not differ greatly across the country. Nationally, the scale of injuries has remained one of the most sensitive subjects within greyhound racing and one that industry officials remain very tight-lipped about. The main organisation collecting such data is the Racecourse Promoters Association (RCPA) who has turned down all requests for information. The National Greyhound Racing Club (NGRC) hold figures relating to greyhounds PTS following injury but are equally guarded. But with research indicating a five figure number for injuries incurred annually on the 30 official British tracks and hundreds of greyhounds PTS solely on economic grounds the information would, of course, prove highly damaging for the business of greyhound racing. _______________________________________________ Website: www.greyhoundaction.org.uk MySpace: www.myspace.com/greyhoundaction Donations: www.greyhoundaction.org.uk/donations.html

  7. PLEASE CROSS POST- FORWARD ASAP HIGH PRIORITY - VERY URGENT APPEAL – HIGH PRIORITY We have received information that ITV News will be covering a live debate at Walthamstow this evening Thursday 31st July between 6.00 -7.00pm MP's who have supported Walthamstow's reprieve will be promoting the 'Save the Stow' campaign along with representatives of the racing industry. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B4_MqflmVWY It has been suggested that an offer over and above the recently publicised sale price of £31.5m has been made by Australian millionaire Richard Codd, together with two other financial backers. Regardless of whether the offer is accepted, a back-up plan to lease the stadium from the new owners, K W Linfoot, Yoo Capital and London and Quadrant Housing Trust has also been discussed. As yet, Greyhound Action has NOT been invited to contribute to the debate and we therefore desperately need your voice to defend the voiceless greyhounds and condemn this 'killing field' once and for all. Please email ITV and question whether a debate should be held at all, in the absence of greyhound welfare and protection groups? Please also highlight the obvious concerns that greyhounds are subjected to horrific injuries, which are sometimes fatal and also Walthamstow is responsible for the deaths of many of the 20 greyhounds that die every day in this industry as reported by the RSPCA. Please include links to Greyhound Protection Groups www.greyhoundaction.co.uk www.greytexploitations.com www.actionforgreyhounds.co.uk Please also enclose a link to the pictures of greyhounds which have been subjected to abuse and exploitation at Walthamstow in the last few months. http://greytexploitations.com/resources-an...tow-greyhounds/ If you prefer you can copy and paste the sample email below Sirs I understand that ITV intend to cover a live debate regarding the revival of Walthamstow Stadium. A stadium, which to quote their present owners, is forced to close because 'attendances and betting turnover on-course have declined dramatically'. Clearly the public have voted with their feet and no longer wish to support a 'circus' that exploits companion animals for entertainment or simply to be used as a betting medium. Surprising then, that ITV choose not to include the issue of 'welfare' in this live debate. The very issue which will have influenced the 'dramatic decline' in attendances. However, I feel it is my duty to speak on behalf of the greyhounds, these graceful creatures, these voiceless tools of the industry's trade. Please look at the greyhounds in this link. This is the reality of the 'Walthamstow Greyhound' and greyhounds are expected to race in these conditions. http://greytexploitations.com/resources-an...stow-greyhounds Fatality numbers are impossible to ascertain but many of the reported 20 greyhounds that die each and every day in the regulated sector of greyhound racing will have suffered whilst being raced to their death at Walthamstow. Greyhound Action reports, due to the culling necessary, because of over breeding and the destruction of surplus greyhounds, Walthamstow, along with the 30 other NGRC tacks can be held responsible for the deaths of over 500 greyhounds every year. Please link to these greyhound protection groups and consider why the issue of 'welfare' should not be a priority in this debate or indeed whether this debate should be aired at all. www.greyhoundaction.co.uk www.greytexploitations.com www.actionforgreyhounds.co.uk Kind regards Email address [email protected] As always, please keep all correspondence polite and many, many thanks for your continued support. Together we can save lives. www.greytexploitations.com

  9. I've just received the following details in an email Prescription Charges You may already be aware but from the 30th October your vet will be able to charge you for prescriptions again. The Office of Fair Trading ruled in 2005 that veterinary practices had a monopoly on the market and put in a ruling which allowed the consumers more choice. This ruling will be expiring in October unfortunately. Therefore, although there are a few months to go, your vet can write out a 6 month prescription, so it would be wise to exercise this right before October 30th to avoid the charges. Although your vet can charge any fee they wish, it is expected that they will charge approx £15 per prescription. Of course, it's unlikely to be economical to gain a one month supply but again, the vet can write the prescription for 6 months, in which case savings can usually be made. The Office of Fair Trading plans to monitor the situation to ensure veterinary practices do not start operating unfairly again and Petmeds.co.uk will setup a complaints form for you to use, should you need it, which will route your comments to the correct department at the OFT.
  10. I’m sure everyone will join me in wishing Dan (lurcherdan) my son, well as he has become Sighthound Welfare Trust’s 4th Trustee. He must be one of the youngest people in the country to become one, having only turned 18 on Sunday last, but he has for the last few years been heavily involved with sighthound welfare and is a founder member of SWT with myself. We are lucky to have his energy and commitment.
  11. Twelve cute pups need new mum Jul 9 2008 A CANINE foster family is urgently needed to look after 12 tiny puppies who cannot be fed by their seriously ill mum. And Buddies are being asked to answer the call for help. When Angelina, a heavily pregnant Lurcher Cross, arrived at the Glasgow Rehoming Centre nine days ago she was severely undernourished. Although she managed to give birth to a dozen healthy pups, the fact that she was so exhausted and malnourished meant her supply of milk dried up. Angelina is trying to look after them but veterinary treatment to help her produce milk has not worked. The only option left is to find a foster mother to take over the nursing of the three-day-old puppies. Story continues Now the Dogs Trust Glasgow is hoping a generous family will step in and help. Sandra Downie explained: “The staff here are currently taking shifts to care for the puppies round the clock and are feeding them with artificial milk. “But we’re no substitute for a mother. Unless we find a foster mum soon, the puppies may die.†Anyone who has, or knows of, a nursing dog is asked to contact the Rehoming Centre immediately on 0141 773 5130. http://icrenfrewshire.icnetwork.co.uk/pde/...-name_page.html
