run free the dogs that were PTS, i too assumed that they must've been in poor health but it turns out they were unhandable... i think i would be a bit ar£y if 50 coppers came storming into where i was, such a shame.

The helper had made an amazing job of rehabilitating this poor dog, in a very short time. . But they were in a hurry. Journalistic and whistleblower rumourmill has ..the police costs of this being put down against Anti terrorist training with outside bodies.

There has been a flurry of interest in this on Facebook , with a lot of new pages opening up and a flurry of attacks on the RSPCA. I am trying to get some clarification on what the situation is. Particularly I am trying to find out (or even promote) if there are any improvements that can be made; maintenance undertaken or anything practical that can be done while the premises are empty.

I am quite happy to supply use of appropriate machinery and train others in its use as and when necessary. I hope to hear something from someone nearer the centre of things before too long.

Regarding Rosedene Kennels - Under police warrant, RSPCA inspectors along with officers from West Midlands Police attended kennels in Walsall on Thursday 21 January 2010.

There were 59 dogs at the kennels. Three dogs were euthanised at the scene on veterinary advice. The remaining 56 dogs were removed from the premises by the RSPCA due to conditions at the kennels.

All of the dogs are now in RSPCA care under assessment and treatment before being moved to RSPCA animal centres for rehoming.

It was a morning raid while volunteers were cleaning kennels.

 

Witnesses said around 50 officers entered the site before moving Rosedene staff away.

 

56 Dogs were taken by the RSPCA and 3 of our beautiful dogs were put to sleep at the scene, being described as un-maneagable!

 

A spokeswoman named Judith Law for the RSPCA said "56 dogs were removed from the premises by the RSPCA due to the conditions at the kennels. Three dogs were euthanised at the scene on veterinary advice. All of the dogs, which have been signed over by the RSPCA, are now in animal centres for re-homing."

 

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said the operation had been conducted on a warrant under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. He said the organisations had acted after information from the community raised concerns about animal welfare.

 

As you may understand we are all absolutely devestated by what has happened. There has been much speculation in the past few days on different sites as to what happened and a lot of heated discussions.

 

All the volunteers here are passionate about the dogs at Rosedene. We are upset that the Police and RSPCA came to Rosedene at a time when the kennels were undergoing cleaning (like all kennels in the country) to conduct their search. The staff were unable to finish cleaning kennels and were escorted away so some dogs were without blankets and adequate water. They were unable to tend to the dogs and carry out their normal routine of administering medication to dogs that needed it.

 

Rosedene has not been shut down but we will be closed for further refurbishment.

 

We would like to thank everyone for their support in this matter. Please continue your support. Volunteers and people who know us know that we all put every effort into every individual stray that comes into Rosedene. A guestbook has been added to the site for our supporters.

There are rumours circulating that a further 19 dogs have been pts, though I'm not sure where these started.

I fear the worst however as the RSPCA appear to be refusing to either confirm or deny this allegation to anyone.

 

I had tried to politely ask them for a confirmation or denial myself - using their Facebook discussion board, as had others, and am saddened to see that they have since shut down the entire discussion boards, directing people to the enquiries centre (who I've not still not had an answer from on an unrelated query which I made before Xmas despite sending a reminder including a further letter and photographs via email since)

Latest local press. Despite being unwilling to answer members of the public on Facebook it appears that to the press, an unnamed spokeswoman for the RSPCA, in the final line "quashed rumours" that another 19 dogs have been pts.

There is nothing massively surprising or different to me there in terms of how I remember it / the kind of environment I saw back in December 2006 however.

Can i say that first vaccinations are done on each dog by the vets as they come 3 days a week,and homechecks are always carried out, they have a list of medications and who has what, and if a dog seems unwell they do so the vet.

Clean bedding is put in every day and there is a walking list for the dogs, for every day so they know which dogs go out.

I know because i was one of the volunteers, who walked the dogs, tranported them and did home checks.

I have had to say this because even though a lot needs to be done to the place to get it up to scratch, at least all this was done.

 

OK the buildings may not be up to scratch ... but how many other pounds, homecheck, first vax, KC treatment, daily walking, vet medication etc?

 

Am sure many other pound's buildings may not be up to scratch but don't do any of the other stuff ... which to my mind is probably more likely to mean that dogs cope better with the situation they are in than with Dogs Trust type buildings.

Are they a boarding kennel as well? If they are, what happened with the boarders?

As far as I'm aware they just take in strays now as they didn't have the room for boarders

I would think they've always had more poundies than boarders and that the RSPCA would have dealt with it appropriately had there been any boarders present.

 

Volunteers etc have been hard working over the weekend, from what I can gather in terms of cleaning, painting, tidying etc. The owners statement was linked to above and it would appear that they hope to re-open. Personally, matters having got to the stage they have, I think it may well need a little more than that, but time will tell. I just hope that those hard working volunteers aren't made to lose heart in the meantime.

 

 

The photos on the BBC link above may have been taken around November 2008 (there was also an earlier suggestion of 2/3 years ago). I am told the small stacked kennels were emergency use only, have not been used for a long time and now store bedding etc. Some of the kennels had been retiled & painted but most of the larger kennels were as shown. The office was unchanged but a vets room had been built since I was there & the building pictured from outside in the local press article is for the new dogs doing their 7 days.

 

 

 

I don't believe for a moment that Rosedene was perfect but I do believe those volunteers who say they really do care and have done their best to help the dogs with limited resources.

 

I'd also have to say that, by comparison, in certain places I've been in the boarders & strays are not really seperate, there is no vets room, nor incoming visits, no, 1st vaccinations, fewer volunteers / staff, the buildings little if any better etc. Perhaps it's time that regulations placed upon Councils licensing & contracting providers were tightened?

Comments from Walsall Council who seem to be trying to be trying to suggest "implied support" or consensus from the other two Councils. Were licensing and less significant "operational" rather than "serious" (or) welfare issues the reason for this raid and closure?

Owner says they will definitely re-open & he's written to the RSPCA telling them he wants all of the animals back.

 

Based upon the assumption / hope that writing might make what we want happen I want Shania Twain, Liz Hurley, Claudia Schiffer, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle & Megan Fox to come round & (simultaneously) entertain me tonight. I shall either live in hope or die a happy man!
