Bryony
Hello All, Very happy to get accepted onto the forum! My name is Bryony and I'm really hoping to get involved in some volunteering for the Oldies Club. I'm a computer technician but am hoping to start a new career in animal rescue soon so really welcome the chance to get some volunteering experience while helping a really worthwhile cause. Here's a bit about me - I'm 25, Female (in case you can't guess that from the name!) and based in Kent. Unfortunately I don't have any pets at the moment - I work full time and also my current landlord doesn't allow pets, so it's not really practical at the moment! I used to have a black Labrador who was lovely, and have also always had dogs in my family who have unfortunately all since passed away. I really miss being around animals and am really passionate about animal welfare, so really want to do whatever I can. I don't have any experience of doing home checking so I'm hoping someone might take me under their wing and show me the ropes, so I can learn to do it on my own. I'm generally good at dealing with people, so, with some practice, I think I'd be really good at it. Anyway, I think that's probably enough of an introduction, I hope to get to know you all on the forums and maybe meet some of you in person in the future. I look forward to chatting to you all and getting involved with the Oldies Club!

Bryony
Hi, wow, I thought I'd be the only person on here at this time of night! I'm based near Gravesend, but I do a long commute to get to work so am quite experienced at the whole driving thing! So I'm hoping to be able to offer to do transport and home-checking all around Kent.

I'm in Gillingham, work in Rochester and grew up on the Strood/Higham border. Am also a homechecker so would be happy to help you out if you need it

Bryony
Hi all, thanks for the messages - it's nice to feel welcome. I've been having a look around and posting a couple of messages, but it's all a bit big and scary in the big wide forum! so I thought I'd come back in here and ask for a bit of advice, before I do anything too stupid. I'm completely new to all of this but I really want to get involved with volunteering, I can't foster at the moment, but I'd like to do transport and home-checking. I just thought, is it ok for me to just start posting on the transport/homechecking areas to offer to help with anything in my area, or do I somehow have to be approved to do this first? Sorry if this info is covered somewhere else on the forums - I have been looking around, but haven't managed to find the answer to this. I'm hoping to get stuck in with making myself useful, but I don't want to do anything wrong, so any advice would be helpful... Thanks very much. Sherlock Bones
It depends on the rescue to be honest.. offer to start and talk to each rescue individually about their requirements - they're all very nice
BOB
Hello Bryony If you want to help with transport for the Oldies Club e-mail them at [email protected] The information needed is where you live and the radius from there that you would be willing to drive. They will also need as many contact details as you can provide them.

Bryony
Thanks very much for the messages and advice, I've emailed all my details to the Oldies Club address and it looks like I'll be doing a transport run soon, so i'm looking forward to that - it's actually making me feel quite warm and fuzzy inside to know I'll be doing something worthwhile (is that normal?!?) cycas
Yes it is! I think usually you don't need any Special Powers for transporting, anyone can do that, usually it's a good idea to try and go along with somone else for a homecheck to get some experience before you volunteer, if you can - sounds like there are Fugees will give you a hand with that so you can gather some experience. Not sure if you are already doing this, but something else that really helps the oldies club is if you can put up a few posters advertising some of the oldies - you can download those from here: http://www.oldies.org.uk/docs/ Apart from promoting those particular dogs, it helps raise awareness of the whole site, and people really do read those posters and go on to surf the site and adopt dogs, even those that have been waiting in rescue for several years.
