Bosun

What a rollerscoaster we are on! Bosun had a bad night last night. This morning we decided we were going to let him go so we called our vet out to the house. By the time the vet got here Bosun was walking around looking bright eyed and interested in everything

His breathing was still pretty noisy though. Vet said that Bosun looked as though he wasn't ready to go so he suggested we try something else before anything drastic was done so we are just off to the surgery to collect some Codeine which hopefully will ease his breathing problem and his rattly chest. We will try anything so long as we can get him more comfortable. He is so determined to stay as long as he can so we have to try and help him

We had mentally got ourselves prepared to let him go this morning (if that's possible) and now it's all changed again. Vet says he is such a determined little soul we have got to do what we can. He said that after he sedated him Thursday evening he was quite expecting him to have slipped away during the night.

He is such a brave little soldier

Bosun is still fighting on  The Codeine is helping quite a lot though we know that we are only treating the symptoms rather than the cause but at least he is coping much better but still fragile.

Things may be a little clearer now according to the vet. He may have gone off his legs last week due to a mini 'stroke' that affected a part of his brain that would not normally be affected as he didn't have the classic symptoms such as vomiting, nystagmus (rapid eye movement) etc.

The breathing problems are due to a separate issue says the vet ie. one of two things. It could be his heart is now so enlarged that it is putting pressure on his trachea and causing the irritation or there is a possibility of lung cancer :( The thought behind this is because he developed a haemangioma on the side of his waterworks but couldn't have it removed because he can't take anaesthetic, it could now have turned into a haemangiosarcoma which means he could have secondaries in the lungs which is the favourite place for it to move to. This is exactly how we lost dear Blackberry last year but hers started as a mammary tumour :(

Whatever, we are not going to put him through xrays or tests as it would be too traumatic for him so we will continue so long as he is comfortable.

He is having a lot of relief now from his coughing spasms, he just gets them about 4 times a day instead of 4 times an hour which was becoming distressing for him.

Here is a pic of him taken 2 days ago when he was just starting to respond to his treatment
