Does Anyone Know Of A Good Behaviourist

Kerri, there's a list of UK members of the APBC (Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors) here. Sarah Whitehead is in Windsor Berks - her details are on that page.

There's also the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) - members list for Berkshire here. Sarah Whitehead is also an APDT member and it says on that site that she does one-to-ones.

Thanks both - I'm actually after personal recommendations as I've had a couple of not very helpful experiences. I don't mind throwing money at the problem - but would like it to work!

Really not sure about t-touch -0 I think we are really down to basic behaviour/training.

Rosie is seeing a lovely behaviourist, recommended by both our vet and a friend. She's in Twickenham (but comes to the home to do a consultation) and might cover your area. There's a list by area of the APBC clinics here - Francesca is on the London section. A behaviourist would first need a vet referal to treat an animal.

I've also had the pleasure of meeting Toni several times - I can vouch that she does some fantastic work with TTouch.

I suggested Sarah as she was a "name" I recognised, but I don't have personal experience. I *think* she's written for Dogs Today etc. and according to this link:

"Sarah Whitehead MSc BA(Hons) Head of Practice for John Fisher for many years, Sarah now runs a busy behavioural practice in the South of England with her associates, specialising in aggression and 'weird and wonderful' problems in dogs and cats.

Sarah also runs the 'Alpha' chain of puppy socialisation and training classes and has 18 branches - now setting a standard of training which reflects her passion for behavioural understanding and modern methods.

She also lectures internationally on this subject. Sarah's other great love is human cognitive psychology - and especially adult learning."

I will ask a dog trainer/behaviour friend of mine. She's in Hampshire, otherwise I'd have suggested her :)

I like Rebecca Cox APDT clicker trainer and student behaviourist, however she mainly deals in more basic stuff I think, depends on what the problems are.

Her clicker classes are great (Theale and Tadley) and she did a one-to-one for Sadie, which really did help us as novices although she did suggest using some aspects of NILIF it was stressed that if we felt Sadie was becoming affected negatively not to continue, she had already assessed Sadie though and determined she was a major attention seeker (in a demanding, play with me not depressed, clingy way) so learning a bit of self-control would help along with the other stuff we went through.

I did really enjoy her pet dog training classes in Tadley until we moved, I didn't like the old bat that helped her out though, she has a tendancy to pick on people in front of the rest of the class (a bit too "perfect" obediency too), however we got own back on her when after a lecture on Buster being overweight, we pointed out he was a bullmastiff not a boxer and she backed off us  Rebecca does have other people who come and help out too in the beginners classes but the more advanced class tends to be just Rebecca, her mum and the old bat (she isn't actually that old I should point out  ).

Rebecca also has tremendous patience with "naughty" dogs. In Sadie's beginners class (>5months inc rescues of any age) we had Dillon who was terrible and did two beginners classes with Rebecca, then our Buster was the "naughty" dog in his beginners class, then in the advanced class she had a GSD that had a tendancy to snap at other dogs but was perfect obedience trained in one corner, a very dog aggressive lab in another corner, Buster in another corner and a dog aggressive boxer in the other corner. Sometime she ran out of corners  but always tried to help the individual dogs while making sure the class was not overly disturbed. However just before we moved I was upset to see her use a spray collar on the boxer when he was staring/growling at other dogs, although she always had control of the remote and used it as a distraction tool while the owner rewarded as soon as the boxer looked back at her after the spray with a click/treat.

Anyway here is her website: http://www.4pawsolutions.co.uk/

I can recommend Rebecca Cox as well - she took Sophie's beginner and intermediate class, and my mum knows her quite well through Reading and District Dog Training club.

Also Elizabeth Kershaw is in Berkshire - she's written at least one book on clicker training, and is the trainer/behaviourist for one of the dog magazines. She's also very good (also helps with the teaching at R&DDTC). Her website with contact details is - canine education

I'd say probably not Francesca as she is pretty much academic I understand :)

I'd recommend Sarah Whitehead, I believe Elizabeth K is retired although not sure but both are good and i've met both and would trust them to be good... remember though, problem dogs can't always be totally cured and some of the prognosis depends on owner understanding and compliance

Not implying you wouldn't follow any programme you were given but with animals it's not always easy for things to work as we'd ideally want. Feel I'm not putting this right, hope you understand what I mean :flowers:

sorry - that made me laugh..... (and I badly need one these days).

Does Rebecca only do clicker stuff or will she use other approaches as well?

I asked about a non-reward marker for Sadie as an alternative and she explained how to properly prime training discs and showed me them but after about 5 minutes we both decided not to go down that route as it was hard enough rewarding the good with the right timing by the time I added a clicker, training discs, treats, poo bags etc to our walk I couldn't hold the lead  !

She promotes the use of the clicker in her classes but if you don't want to use it then you are still perfectly welcome, however being APDT she won't allow choke chains, prong collars etc but that is a plus I think.

Did Sophie attend the Theale or the Tadley classes?
