  8. The 1998 Irish Control of Dogs Act is pre-dated by the 1991 UK Dangerous Dogs Act (which is where we got the inspiration for ours). While there are more breeds listed on the Irish Act the restrictions and penalties are far more severe for the 4 breeds listed in the UK act as far as I can tell. The law is rarely enforced here as long as you have your dog under control. For some people and dogs that is a short lead and a muzzle and for others that's a dog trotting alongside or nearby with no visible means of control but still obedient and responsive to their owner. No area is perfect, no generalisation will cover every situation but, by and large, well behaved dog(s) of any breed are generally ignored. In most cases we practise a deed not breed attitude here (obviously there are exceptions but for every time someone reports that their restricted breed dog was mentioned, noticed or reacted to we should remember that there were hundreds of occasions where that particular dog was not). You might run into a problem on the streets of Dublin (more people and more dogs means a greater chance that some muppet owner of a dog of your breed has caused upset and this refers to every breed) with passers-by but it's very unlikely that the Gardai will notice or care what you're walking down the road with. Normally I'd agree that the Act was poorly thought out and agree that it needs changing but some of the posts here have made me a little defensive if I'm honest so I guess I'm taking a slightly different stand to normal. It still needs changing, but then so do the UK's Elaine, I unlocked your PI account this morning (it auto locks if you enter the password incorrectly several times) and if you're still having trouble getting in let me know.
  9. Best of luck to Flora at the vets, I hope there's something they can do. I also hope you see an improvement with the Synflex, my Loki Chops was given a new lease of life when I started him on Stride Plus (a similar enough product) and is currently in better shape than he was 18 months ago when he was given 3 months left to live. He sees a regular vet and a homoeopathic vet and I've found both to be very helpful. Have you considered looking into homoeopathic treatments as well (for this sort of thing they're very much an addition to, and not a replacement for, traditional medicine)? It's horrible to watch a young dog in pain, I really sympathise on that one We decided with Loki that if he was to have a short life it'd be a fun life and we've tried to walk the line between keeping him moving/pain free and not wrapping him in cotton wool.
  10. That's a most unsightly lump, I can see why Akita wants it off. Good luck at the vets tomorrow Akita

  12. Sending oodles of good thoughts Georges way.
  13. RMQ: The hamsters and gerbil that power the Refuge - are they in the same cage? Gerbils should be kept in pairs or groups anyway, so someone needs to go the server farm and carefully introduce an new one (of the same sex hopefully) to the poor existing single gerbil that spends it's days toiling away powering the forum with no other gerbils to talk to.
  14. Lisa McMurray passed away. Rest in peace
  15. Happy Birthday Sarah MuckyChook

Mintoe had a raised temp so the vet gave him some antibiotics and we're to see how that goes. His underlying piddly problem is obviously behavioural though so we're going to contact a homoeopathic vet too. I think this was the last straw though and we've decided to build him a stud pen in the new year. It'll be attached to the side of the house with it's own run, insulated, wired, heated, added to the exiting webcam network etc and we'll see how he gets on on his own (the way this cottage is designed we can't really separate him from the others) and take it from there. I have feliways plugged in for the last couple of years - they're great things
  17. I've noticed the last couple of days that Yama Moo is spending between 5 and 20 minutes sitting down at random intervals licking her lips & swallowing almost obsessively. Her head is tilted back a little while she does this and she isn't licking at any other parts of her body or any other objects. I've had a good look in her mouth but can't find any signs of infection or injury. Her routine hasn't changed much (I'm in and out with work normally anyway so being left alone for part of a day or having us both home at random short notice is fairly normal for the hounds) and I can't think of anything that might have stressed her. I'd have booked her into the vet today but the vet she she dislikes is on this week and I don't know how she'll take to having him look inside her mouth (she's a Great Dane and he's afraid of her too so I'd only use him if it's an emergency). Has anyone come across anything like this before? She's eating and drinking well and in good form apart from this (she's currently sprawled out in front of the fire using Loki collie as a pillow).

I meant to say that obviously, given that his piddling routine has changed, he is going to the vet first thing in the morning in case there is a medical reason behind it this time. Just because there wasn't before doesn't mean I'll take a chance with his health, especially given how prone neutered males are to UTI's etc.
