  1. yep advice above sounds good. sounds like maybe the little one is finding his feet and getting a bit settled and maybe looking after his turf. From what i've heard it's quite common with terrier types. unless he doesn't bark at the door normally, then it's maybe just something specific to that person.
  2. saw this boys pic on the springfield stray kennels site m10 the greyish looking gsd type http://www.lostdogsyorkshire.com/apps/photos/album.jsp?albumID=693608 he looks so sweet, he's been in there a while now too. my boyfriend is working abroad for 5 weeks and i did jokingly threaten to get another dog, but realistically I can't afford another. if i had the space and money though i think i'd have quite a few more.
  3. not chipped according to doglost ..poor boy hope he's found safe..
  4. personally i'd be very uncomfortable accepting a gift like that from someone I had never met in person. Your average friendship bracelet is made of coloured string..and if this one cost 50 to 100 pounds I expect it's made of something a little more than that. I may be over reacting but really be very careful, people can get some very strange ideas sometimes, and what may seem harmless can turn very nasty particularly if someone thought there was more to it and then finds out there isn't. but i might be wrong, he might be a totally honest guy who understands there is not now nor will never be anything more to it..but it just sounds a bit iffy..good luck whatever you decide
  5. fine by me, more the merrier.. i am suprised vets give the option of witholding fluids during op to make it cheaper, surley that puts animals at risk. I do think tattoing to mark speyed dogs would need to be put into practice everywhere to be effective, that's why i was thinking maybe the vet regulators are the people to appraoch.
  6. says soething in the article about trying to pull the dogs apart or seperate them..maybe they were fighting and kiddy got in the middle..poor boy, poor dogs..crossing fingers for all involved
  7. maybe we could get some campaign going or something, at least for all dogs a vet neuters for a rescue. I know the site is an infection risk, but realistically the spay wound itself is much more of a risk and if that is being monitored after surgery there's no reason why a tattoo can't. I know tatoos hurt, i have them myself and would never suggest they should be done with the dog awake..god only knows what scrawl you would get with a wriggly dog! would it be the BSAVA lot that needed to be approached? i did suggest it to a vet working for a rescue charity once and he laughed at me and told me i was being ridiculous and there was no need for it..but i disagree..but then he was also advocating neutering of dogs from 8 weeks, but thats a different topic..
  8. totally agree with you there:-)
  9. the neopaw ones come in pairs, which have one left and one right, i found it best to use both with those or the dog was really confused
  10. i know that but were not talking designs, and they have plenty of experience with needles and the autoclave hygene aspects, and since they are trained surgeons you'd think tattooing would be easier if anything. do greyhounds get tatood by a trained tatooist or do trainers etc do it themselves?
  11. I was reading the topic about new licensing laws in ireland and the bit about reductions for neutered dogs.. and it got me thinking..how would you prove a bitch was spayed? if it's done a long time ago there is often no scar, and if the dog has been rehomed through a rescue or stray kennels you might not be able to track what vets neutered. Also when a bitch comes into rescue, currently unless there is an obvious scar, the only way to be sure the dog is spayed is to open them up to check, obviously carrying quite a few risks to the dog dependant on age and health.. so my question is why can't vets tattoo a little x or something onto the belly of a dog, or even a traceable code or soemthing linking it back to the vets.? it could be the same code as the microchip vet code. it only has to be tiny and the fur could grow back over it, but it would make it so much easier to tell if a dog is neutered or not.it shouldn't affect show dogs as they have to be entire don't they? or is that just the males? (sorry don't know much about that stuff). anyone know why vets don't do something like this? am i missing something obvious?
  12. at the start it gets compared to flyball and agility..christ if every owner that did flyball or agility with their dogs lost that many dogs a year to the sport, or rehomed dogs when they were no longer able to compete and win..they would be banned surley...
  13. I bought some of these for my mums gsd when she began dragging her feet due to degenerative disorder. I bought the high performance outdoor boots, they were great, and easy to get on, just make sure you get the right size. they come in pairs for either front or back feet, and i've seen them on sale cheaper on ebay. http://www.canineconcepts.co.uk/item--High-Performance-Dog-Boots-2-boots--neopaws---dogs
  14. not sure how long the dap spray takes to work but i know they say give 1 to 2 weeks to see effects of dap collar.
  15. Aww what a babe! fingers crossed for you and him. he looks a very clever fella.
  16. thanks a million all peeps that posted:-) glad someone could set me straight on the local stray kennels.
  17. i suspect all council poo bins would be incinerated, like with medical waste. I know big boarding kennels have to have seperate bin collections for it, and it's the big yellow waste bags.
  18. get quite a few people ringing us at work asking who to contact when they have lost their dog. I'm a bit confused lately. I currently say Springfield kennels and Mount pleasant and is it fleet lane or something in bradford? It used to be oakenshaw grange and marina too but I don't know if they are still open or not, keep hearing conflicting things about marina..anyone know? do you report it to the police? i know every area has a dog warden and i tell people to contact 24 hr vets too in case it was taken in injured out of hours..should i be telling people to check every vet or would an injured dog the dog warden picked up go to a standard vet? if someone takes an injured dog to a vets off their own back do vets report it as stray to the wardens or not? also point in direction of doglost too but is there anything else i could be suggesting? aside from posters etc..can anyone clarify what stray kennels are still open in the area?
  19. You will never get every dogged microchiped without every non registered breeding bitch being spayed. How many litters for sale do you see in the papers? how many people got their puppy "from a woman down the street who's dog got pregnant by accident".. these people will not chip before they home the dogs, they don't even wear collars or walk their dogs, they let them stray. Vets should scan any pet that goes to them for treatment, regardless if it has being registered before.Microchip comapanies only hold on to the most recent details. You need training to chip a dog safely as well as done wrong and with a lot of bad luck a dog can be paralysed. Yes more chipping is a good thing, more free and subsidised microchipping is the way to go, and all registered rescues should be chipping and spaying every dog. but vets need to step up as well, and I can't see it ever being 100% of dogs that are chipped.
  20. just read coape site and they do do shorter courses too, my friend is doing the one that leads to her being able to get vet refferals for behaviour. My mistake
  21. i'm told the coape courses are in the thousands..just worth baring in mind. Also i know people with mixed views on compass, the behaviour and psychology one i have heard mixed things about but the advanced diploma in behaviour managment is meant to be good. Just signed up for it myself will let you know how it goes
  22. spasholt animal bahaviour bsc is part time and meant to be good
  23. i think to some extent puppy socialisation classes can be a bit much for a pup.But not becuase of fears over bonding, i mean a class is once or maybe twice a week, i can understand concerns over bonding when it's 2 male littermates that the owners do very little with individually, but not when it's one lonely pup going to a class to learn how to act around other dogs, my only concern with some is when the really boistrous puppies are allowed to push around the more submissive ones, puppies are really sensitive and going through fear periods and i'd be a little worried that a bad run in with a bossy pup could be the start of a phobia. But if it's a well supervised class it shouldn't be an issue. as for keeping dogs apart for 6 months it's a bit impractical for most of us who don't live in massive houses.i couldnt seperate my cats and dog so they never saw each other..let alone if i brought another dog in.
