  1. They haven't used any tarps They started on the Friday morning, ripped half the main roof off (mid terrace rear side of roof) and the sloping slate roof over the extension which covers Ellie's bedroom. MArk's part of roof at the front was left on over the weekend. They felted and lathed the exposed parts but didn't tarp (but I've been told by other people that if it's felted it doesn't need tarping?) it. After the shock of seeing the chimney pot sat sideways behind the chimney, I forgot to tell you all - my bedroom light AND Ellie's bedroom light no longer work Mark's is fine, but then, his part of the roof was still on on Friday. Obviously I checked the fuses, bulbs etc but it's obvious that when they ripped the slates off they must have done something to the supply. In all probability Ellie's ceiling (which doesn't have loft space) is so close to the actual roof that I presume the supply has been affected there and that her ceiling fitting probably feeds off mine (or vice versa) and that is how they are the only two affected. As soon as the Gaffer got on site Monday morning I appraised him of the situation, only for him to tell me that he can't see how them taking the roof off would affect the electrics and that it was nothing they'd done They haven't yet slated Ellie's roof, but they have done Mark's side and are working their way down mine and expect to be finished by tomorrow evening - I've discussed it with Mark, but Mark is not interested in intervening (I'm sure they're doing the blonde, female and dumb routine on me) because he's not paying for it!! What do I do? I've spoke to Trading Standards/Consumer Direct and they say send a letter in writing etc but in the meantime, Ellie and I are in the dark!!
  2. We could try but we'd end up having an Irish revolt on our hands, and lose the custom of the two Irish drinking establishments. Certainly I can see the base op "accidentally" forgetting or delaying his taxis from now on but not an outright ban. Which is a shame. However, if his best mate rings later and says he'll take me, I may well forgive them Wishful thinking on my part though I so did not just say that I think I might try bunging them on Freecycle, however I've learnt myself a lesson that I'd obviously forgotten, not to trust a customer 'til you see their cold hard cash in your hand
  3. I approached him last night about the tickets and hey ho, what a surprise, now not only can he not go but neither can his wife. Similarly, he does not want to pay for the tickets either. Cue £100 worth of tickets going in the bin later TBH, I would give them away if it meant them not being wasted. I picked his best mate up last night, who happened to be sharing the cab with him when he asked me to get him the tickets, I think he feels a bit bad about it all as he as said he will "see what he can do" and has offered to ask his sisters today if they want to go. It's a nice gesture but I would think it's a bit late in the day to do a spur of the moment thing, especially if you have kids I've even offered to bung in free transport up there and back, can't get rid of them for love nor money And I'm certainly not going up there on my tod
  4. They knocked the door earlier to tell me "umm.. you have a big problem... a couple of courses have come off the chimney and we had to take one of the pots off until Monday" Luckily the quote included repointing the chimney and removing the little chimney I thought they'd found a bees nest as I found deposited on the ground a single round wooden ball type structure about the size of a ping pong ball with a small cluster of honeycombs inside (21 of them) but the roofers said it wasn't a wasp or bee that made it, it was a spider I think the guy's seriously mistaken - what spider makes a pulp nest and lays eggs in honeycombs? It would however go some way to explaining why we get so many bees in our house each spring and why they appear to come out of the back room fire
  5. I have lots of friends luckily but only two or three special friends, I prefer it that way. I have a best male friend, and a best female friend. My best male friend and I talk on the phone anywhere between 3 times and 15 times a day, and sometimes text as well. We fall out probably once a week but one of us will invariably apologise and we're mates again. He is there for me financially too. I've lost count of the times he's bailed me out when I've been up the creek like when the car's broke down and I haven't been able to afford to repair it. When I bought the car I couldn't afford it at the price they had it up for so he lent me £1000 and said pay it back when you've got it - he can be a pain in the backside sometimes but I love him to bits in a completely platonic way - we've both said the human race would die out if we were the only two people left on the planet. His only real fault is that he can be a bit jealous regarding other friends I have. My best female friend and I talk a couple of times a week and we text a lot, she is completely different to him and as she's had a lot of problems both financially and personally I play the same role for her as my male friend does for me, helping her out with food, lifts, money etc. She would drop anything to help me, I remember 11 years ago my ex fiancee had walked out, leaving me pregnant with no money and the house a pigsty. She came round with her (then) husband and while her husband laid a second hand carpet another friend had given me, she scrubbed all the floors and bleached the kitchen etc. She was 9 months pregnant I have another friend who I talk to all the time but he can be two faced and has lied to me in the past, so I prefer not to tell him the important stuff.
  6. Ermm.. We finally got round to affording a new roof (the solicitor dealing with my late Grandfather's estate very nicely agreed to release enough money to cover getting it done) as it wouldn't have lasted another 3 months, Mark has been patching it from the inside every other month for the past twelve months Anyway, they've ripped the old slates and lath off above the kitchen and above my bedroom and have yet to start on Mark's side. However.. I just went out the back to ask them if they wanted a cuppa. I shouted up, and as there was no answer, walked to the opposite end of the garden to "have a look" as the scaffolding obscures it all. When I'd backed up enough to be able to see, a workman appeared to be wrestling with one of the chimney pots as the other workman looked as if he was holding the brickwork together on the chimney They've took the stack/pot off and leant it horizontally behind the brickwork and have gone back to felting and lathing the roof. Should I be worrying about the chimney? I mean, I'd have thought if there was cause for concern that they'd have come down by now and told me the bad news, surely?
  7. The worrying thing is, his wife actually said (in front of me) to his brother "she's got a free ticket spare, do you want it?", making me wonder if they are intending to pay if they go anyway
  8. Going off topic slightly, Mum's whippetty thing kisses and licks but his favourite thing of all time that he does with everyone, hoomans and dogs, is to check your mouth to see what you've been eating I wouldn't mind but he's like a baby bird, he'd shove the whole of his gob in your mouth if he got chance. And he only ever does it after either us or the dogs have eaten
  9. Basically, I was asked by a customer if I could get some tickets for the Saw Doctors (Irish rock/folk band) concert in Wolverhampton. I paid for them, now the customer says that out of the three people he may be the only one going One minute he says his wife is going, next she's changed her mind (but he says she may change it back again on the day) He said he's definitely going but I am getting worried that I could end up being left with three tickets I have asked him to ask a couple I know who are customers of mine, but he hasn't got back to me whether they have said yes or not So, in the event that I am left with tickets, does anyone fancy being on standby just in case? It would mean having to pick them up from outside the Civic on the night most probably.
  10. .............Only on the Refuge..........
  11. Is there an original thread we can peruse?
  12. Greyhounds, labs, springer spaniels, westies and staffies. A lot of lab crosses and terrier crosses. A few whippets and I've seen a couple of Iggys two (lucky buggers).
  13. Not to mention that in this day and age, what percentage of the average person looking to rehome a dog has the time and resources to look after a pup, compared to an adult dog? 10 years ago if you saw someone walking a greyhound, it was probably someone who either owned or trained greys for racing. Nowadays, how frequently do you see retired racers being walked by loving families who never went looking for a pup, but an adult dog they could show compassion for and cherish for the rest of it's life? Where I live, the most prominent breed of dog being walked is a greyhound, and most from rescue. In fact, judging by tattoos, I'd say a lot from Ireland too. Says me with a Welsh dog and fiercely proud of him. And thankful that the rescue involved looked beyond the geographical barriers and put their Christmas to one side for his life, I will be forever in your debt.
  14. I've got two - a freecom 500 gig whixch is brilliant because it draws power from your computer, meaning you literally just plug and play, no power leads. freecom 500 gig I've also got this one.. 1TB hard drive I was at Stak Computers this week and if you ring and speak to Nidj, he was selling some 750 gig ones. I think they were £70. They do mail order too
  15. Alex I'm so sorry I've missed this, you must be in bits Come on Max, perk up and you'll be home in no time eating sossidges Crossing my fingers and everything else that you can have him home this weekend whilst they go through the tests Keep your chin up
  16. No I'm still here, I just lurk these days
  17. I've started to notice since I broke my collarbone that the hand on that side occasionally goes a darker colour than the other, it's very noticeable when you compare the two together. I also have what appear to be light blue thick veins (lots of them coming off my shoulder/arm socket and running across to my chest (this is also very obvious when comparing the two sides). Okay so it may not be normal, but should I be getting worried?
  18. Just wondering if it's worth taking them to the cobblers to see if they can widen the heel slightly?
  19. Dublin river tall boots dublin valley boots Both about £90 but don't rub
  20. You can get party feet sticky on heel cuchions to put in the boot and you could also try those compeed blister plasters, they are like gel and bond to your blister until it's healed but cushion any bruising at the same time
  21. I was going to buy a pair last year but ended up with four pairs of these instead lol I got the synthetic and the leather pairs in both brown and black, they're waterproof and are sooo chumfy from day one. They're the only pair(s) of boots that haven't rubbed, chafed or blistered me and I live in them. I know Dublin make the yard boots in a similar fashion (not sure if you're after muck boots TM or just a pair of muckers!!) They're £25 and come in either touch tape or lace up
  22. Oops, hit the wrong button I will have a go at archiving them later then, thank you
  23. My laptop is slowly morphing into my sound system, I have 1100 albums on hard drive so far but the laptop's sound card is insufficient to play the music without crackling and popping. I have looked into buying a new sound card and I'm not sure whether to get a USB, pcmcia or express card, which is best? I have 3 usb slots but one is taken up by the optical mouse because I hate using the onboard touchpad, one has the external hard drive plugged into it and the other has a bluetooth dongle in it for hooking up my phone to transfer stuff. I wanted to just walk into a shop and buy one but it seems that nowhere keeps them in stock PC World at Coventry was my last resort and they don't have them in either, the nearest store being Sutton Coldfield What's the best card for my lappy and where can I get one without having to order it in? Thanks for looking Em
  24. Usually after I've paid my subs my pm box goes back to normal but this time it hasn't. I know I've paid cos the receipt is on the subs page - I don't want to delete my messages really so how do I sort it out?
