Bella is an adorable, affectionate 12 year old Border Collie x Spaniel (Sprollie!) who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Cleethorpes, NE Lincolnshire, waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.

Bella came into our care with her sister Dotty but we felt that they would thrive even more if they were separated and allowed to develop their own individual personalities. This has worked out very well and both girls settled quickly and happily in their foster homes.

You can see how happy and lively Bella is in the video below:

Her foster carer tells us:

She loves to be with you and will sit nicely near you whether you are out gardening or watching TV. She has learnt the rules and won’t go upstairs but does like to jump on the couch the minute we turn our backs She can be left without a problem (up to 5 hours) and she settles very nicely at night.

Bella is very excited by other dogs when on the lead but is fine when she meets them and particularly good off lead. However, she likes to be the centre of attention and she won’t let another dog be dominant over her, so she would be best as the only dog in her new home, or she could perhaps live with a submissive or aloof dog. She doesn’t like to share her toys! She also used to guard her bowl from her sister Dotty but she is fine with humans when eating.

Bella gets very excited by cats in the garden and will chase and bark at them. She was tested with a dog-savvy cat in its own territory: she didn’t chase it but she was excited. If she has a careful introduction to a cat that is used to dogs, she may be OK. You might like to read our article about Dogs and Cats. Bella is very good with children but she sometimes snatches toys when excited so children should not be too young; 7 years or older would probably be best.

Her foster carer tells us about Bella’s love of walks, travelling and playing ball:

Bella loves her walks, especially when she gets to the park to play fetch with a tennis ball. She pulls on her lead, especially when she is heading to the park, although she has improved significantly and a bit more training continued by her new family should have her perfect on the lead. She has learned to wait nicely at the front door and follow us out although we are still progressing this to the front gate.

She loves to travel in the car and travels very well, if anything, she is excited and likes to try and stick her nose out the window.

She has loads of energy and loves water - she even jumped in a canal when off lead! Her recall is improving and we have a ball most of the time for her which she has learnt to drop for another throw instead of just tearing it apart. If she is given a ball indoors she only wants to rip it apart but outdoors she will play fetch till she is tired out.

Bella needs an active home where she can have daily off-lead walks. She does not mind whether the house is busy or quiet, so would fit into most homes.

Bella is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. She is in good health apart from needing to have a tooth removed, and she will also be having some small lumps on her stomach tested at the same time. The vet expects that they are just fatty lumps but wants to be sure.

A final comment from her foster carer:

Even though she is energetic when she has a ball to chase, Bella is a real people dog and just loves a fuss. She will go to everyone and sit in front of them waiting for affection. We have had plenty of visitors and she is happy with anyone in the house. Only when she is ignored does she go and lay down quietly.
