Feeling A Bit Upset

Thanks Ian. :flowers: I had to go to the vets with Gemma yesterday so had a chat about Roxy. I explained my position on ops and intrusive tests and the vet said he understood what I meant about not wanting to spoil her final weeks (hopefully months!). He said he'd have a chat to the senior vet and then get back to me to discuss any other options.

I've been giving her Milk Thistle and have been cooking really nice, interesting meals for her. She's eaten just about enough so far this week, and she's been bright on her walks, so hopefully she'll be around a while longer.

Glad that Roxy is eating okay and still enjoying her walks

When Flyn started his liver problems, they did a blood test first to check his liver function (although we weren't told not to feed him  ) Then he went back later for his ultrasound which they did while I was with him. He had to lie on the vet table and I watched the pictures as they scanned him (I remember seeing lots of air bubbles in his intestines  ) and it took about 15/20 minutes. I suppose the fact that he was a lazy greyhound meant that he didn't have to be sedated.

Hope she still has lots of time left yet Jo :GroupHug:

It's good to hear Roxy is doing well. I believe if damage isn't too severe the liver can gradually heal itself, though kidneys don't so you may well have months rather than the weeks you fear if you can get her eating again.

Somewhere along the way I came across this site which has all sorts of interesting / helpful fact sheets so it might be worth doing a search for liver on there http://www.vetspecialists.co.uk/index.php

Sorry for dredging this thread up, but I thought about it the other day and wondered how long ago it was that I posted it. Turns out, it was exactly a year ago.

The good news is that Roxy is still very much alive and she's much healthier and happier than she was a year ago. The only 'treatment' she's had has been milk thistle, and I'm convinced it's helped her. She still has her off times and goes off her food, but they only last a few days and then she gets her appetite back and perks up again. I've given up trying to feed her the healthier dog foods and she now has whatever she wants - tins of Butchers are what she'll eat most reliably. She also has chicken and cous-cous (cous-cous is just about the only non-meat item that she'll eat, other than KitKats, and I obviously don't want her to eat many of those; although I'm wondering if she was weaned on KitKats as she always perks up when she sees one, and she is from York (home of the KitKat) ).

I might take her back to the vet for a blood test soon, to see how the results compare to last year.

Hoping she's still around this time next year!

Have you tried her on the Arden Grange Partners tinned food?

Thanks for the link. She doesn't generally like foods that have rice or veg in, so she probably wouldn't be keen. I might get some to try though as the other 4 will eat anything. They've had a very varied diet recently - eating all the stuff Roxy refuses!

Holly has kidney disease and would not eat renal diet at first but now ets it with relish, I put chicken flavoured "Bon Appetit" on it to encourage her. I got it off the internet. She is on Ipakitine powder sprinkled on her food and Rubenal tablets.

She is nearly 14 and is like a young dog again, full of life and fun.

I hope that your little girl is soon just as happy as Holly :GroupHug:
