cindere528
Dillon is going to be on heart medication for the rest of his life. That in itself is not a problem, he has responded very well to them & now seems to be back to my normal boingy bouncy gobby boy that I love so much However, he is going mad for food all the while & that is most unlike him :o . He always used to be *interested* in food (he is a cocker after all ), but he was never obsessed with it. He is a very slim, athletic build, so weight gain isn't going to be too much of a problem if he needs more food. I'm wondering if the heart medication has increased his appetite? I would be very grateful for replies, especially from anyone who has a dog on heart meds or who has in the past had a dog on heart meds.

Anne Grose
Well none of those medicines have any kind of side effect that would increase appetite. My guess would be that Dillon simply feels so much better than he has done for ages and that is what has increased his appetite. To give you some hope for a long time yet my mum was diagnosed with heart failure and I was told by her heart specialist that 40% of patients diagnosed with this die within the next 6 months - well, she is still with me 4 years later - her tablets keep needing to be adjusted to keep her stable but she is doing OK for an 85 year old who didn't have a very good prognosis. She also takes Furosemide and the human equivalent of fortekor.
EAD
Benji was on Vetmedin for about the last 9 years of his life and Frusemide for the later years. Didnt notice increased appetite but they certainly helped him. Gentle for Dillon
cindere528
OK, many thanks for those replies. As I said, it's not really a problem if his appetite increases, I was just curious as to whether it was the meds causing it. I think you're probably right Anne, in that he's just feeling so much better, he feels more like eating. EAD, that's given me a lot of hope, knowing your dog carried on for another 9 years. I know Dillon won't go on that long, he's about 11 or 12 now, but if we're looking at years rather than months, that's fab
Mrs Mop
Joe has been on them since last October and a few weeks ago he was also put on Prilactone. Joe also had an increase in appitite, wanted as much food as he could get, he has never been like this. Joe is fed 3 times a day an I soak his complete food so it swells up, he thinks he is getting a lot more food than he is. Joe is now 13, he is quite active when he is awake but does sleep a lot, he is part Whippet so that could account for his sleeping, it is something he has always done but I think he is doing more of it now. Houndwoman
Well none of those medicines have any kind of side effect that would increase appetite. My guess would be that Dillon simply feels so much better than he has done for ages and that is what has increased his appetite. That's just what I was going to say Various dogs of ours have been on the same meds and I have never seen their appetite increase. I am sure it's because he feels so much better

Wendbert
When Poppy was on all her meds (she ended up on 14 tablets a day), her appetite didn't really increase that much. However, when she was having problems with fluid build up and having regular drains, she did have days when she really didn't want to eat at all. Hopefully though, Dillon won't have the same abdominal swelling
