  1. what a dreadful thing to happen. So sorry
  2. Shouldn't do this from work but just found this article from last week: http://www.girlstalksports.com/More-Sports...t-200702152115/
  3. Oh dear I ought to comment on this as I put the original post on. I came across this yesterday and was asked to spread as far and wide as possible. I did check out the links that were given and it seemed that, from the content of the newspaper articles, it was genuine. Also, if it was untrue and the newspaper had been sued then I wouldn’t have expected this information to be viewable to all on the web. However, I realise the implications for the board and I should have checked this out with you Pingu before posting, apologies. I’m actually in the middle of a bit of a crisis at home with a very sick dog and as this event is scheduled so soon I just wanted to post it on and get back to looking after my boy. I am trying to register with Animal Rights Community Online so that I can speak to Nicky directly and hopefully get some more information but it’s proving to be a slow job. I’m waiting to have my registration approved (I think ) then I can PM Nicky. Has anyone else tried or managed to register? I may not get chance to look at this again until Thursday. I don’t know if anyone has looked at the forum link at the bottom of the original post but Nicky is posting on there and the topic is viewable if you’re not registered. Sue
  4. with permission to crosspost: Gerald McClellan - ex boxer and dog fighter being honored On Saturday Feb 24th the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London is hosting an event called the Gerald McClellan Benefit Evening. McClellan is a disabled American ex-boxer left with brain damage after his fight with Nigel Benn 10 years ago - he's partially paralysed, totally blind, & virtually deaf. Top sports stars & celebrities are attending this high-profile fundraising evening for him. McClellan bred, trained & fought pitbulls all his adult life. 'Training' consisted of him getting dogs, cats & other animals from pet shops & rescue centres & throwing them in with his pitbulls, which he claimed needed to taste blood & kill every day. The 'rescued' dogs had their muzzles taped shut so they couldn't defend themselves & therefore injure his valuable pitbulls; they also had their paws tied together. Then McClellan would set one of his dogs on them as they lay there defenseless & terrified, unable to get up or run away, unable to cower away from the ferocious attack, unable even to yelp. Appallingly, McClellan also used to video himself carrying out these atrocities - he enjoyed what he was doing so much that he got actual pleasure from watching it back later on - he called it 'entertainment'Appallingly, McClellan also used to video himself carrying out these atrocities - he enjoyed Tellingly, his cousin said of him: "Gerald likes killin' things." He also described McClellan as: "A violent, violent, violent, violent, violent man." Scary. This is the man whom top sports stars & celebrities are going to honour & fawn over on February 24th, with all the Press watching. They're going to hold him up as a hero. Give him a standing ovation. Talk about his dignity and courage. His own website describes him as a 'gallant & noble man' - anyone else feel like vomiting? I've written to all the papers & got nowhere - no one wants to touch this story, probably because of his disabilities. To me his current health is irrelevant: he's still the same man who tortured & terrified animals until they were dead, still the same man who did it over & over again. Still the same man who videotaped it because he liked watching defenseless animals being torn to pieces while all they could do was squirm in agony & whine in terror. The Press haven't done anything, nor have other animal welfare groups I've contacted. I'm running out of options. I'm stuck up here in Huddersfield & feel so frustrated. I want something the media will take interest in - I suggested a Name & Shame campaign, but they didn't even go for that. So: are there any groups in London who could organise a demonstration outside the Grosvenor on the benefit night? Most of the people going know about McClellan's past: by attending the event they're condoning his actions & to me should be called to account for that - they're condoning the dog-fights, the animals taken from pet shops and rescue centres thinking they'd got a kind new home, the appalling restraining of the dogs so callously used as 'sparring' for the pitbulls. There are even rumours that he set his dogs on a litter of puppies. (http://observer.guardian.co.uk/osm/story/0,6903,583541,00.html) - for more details about him. www.geraldmcclellanwww.geraldmcclellan<WBR>.co.uk - contains a constan I am totally contactable if anyone wants to PM me about this issue. If a demo can't be organised, please could as many people as possible write to the Grosvenor House Hotel complaining about the event? [email protected] talkback@the-talkback [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] - cast members on the guest list [email protected] (put 'Seconds Out' in subject box) [email protected] - Labour sports secretary The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, W1K 7TN Sorry this is such a long post but I can't tell you how strongly I feel about this. My Dad's spreading the word throughout the Manchester boxing scene & has a lot of respected people on his side, but we can't seem to get anything actually done. We want the event cancelled: McClellan can do what he wants - we just don't want to see him being honoured & feted & no one saying anything about what he's really like. Cancelled would be great. But to be honest, a demonstration would be even better because it would publicise the whole thing. Anything would be welcome from you - info, links, help. This site's a breath of fresh air after the nightmares I've had to absorb into my brain over this: please please help if you can. 11. Crossposted: Found 5 January, Male, grey Greyhound (possibly Lurcher) in Kings Road, Alton, Hampshire. Muzzle going grey, may be elderly, and neutered. A lovely biddable dog who seems to have suffered a bit of neglect as his nails were dreadfully overgrown, to the point of curling up. No collar or microchip but wearing a flea collar, although covered in fleas. Appears to have been well fed. He has been take to Cedar Vets in Alton, Hampshire and from there will be passed to the Dog Warden. If this is your dog please contact the vets to find out where he has been taken. There are two numbers for Cedar Vets here http://www.accessplace.com/vet/hampshire/alton.htm not sure which surgery was involved.

  18. I've just this minute had a phone call from my vet. She's spoken to the vet from the referral centre that diagnosed the Aspergillosis and they think that there's a possibility that the fungal infection may have spread to his brain and that could be the reason for the seizures etc. I'm not sure at this point what the implications are if it turns out that it has spread that far. He's booked in have an MRI in about a fortnight to see what that shows up. I haven't heard about the blood tests yet. Although a lot of the time he's behaving what would seem completely normal he's had some very aggressive little episodes with the other dogs and also one with a shadow on the carpet so clearly something is not right. So all in all not really very good news. Sue Edited: Sorry I forgot to say thank you for continuing to send him healing thoughts.
  19. It's his best day yet He's moving around a lot better today and even went and gave the front door a load of verbal abuse when the post arrived, so everything normal there
  20. No more fits. Was hoping to have blood tests done today but the vet said no so I’m a bit disappointed about that. Monday morning at the park, before all this started, he cut his pad and although it looks clean the vet wanted to put him on anti-biotics over the weekend as infection getting into his system at this point would really not be good. So once again I’m just hoping that he doesn’t need any more valium in the next few days and then can get the bloods done on Monday. There is a slight possibility that the fungal infection has spread to his brain, although I’ve discussed this with the referral centre who diagnosed it and they said it is extremely rare. I think an MRI might be on the cards a bit later on. The vet today said that the state he was in on Monday would have caused incredible inflammation of the brain and it’s likely that this hasn’t completely gone yet so it might cause him to behave a bit strange at times. However she also said that the recovery he has made so far is quite remarkable and a lot more than she could have hoped for so I have to keep reminding myself of that!! Thanks again for your messages. Sue

    Vischa

11/6/87 –27/9/03 Vischa Vampire (Kennel Club Obedience and Working Register) Vischa came to me at seven weeks old from my local rescue, an accidental Whippet/Collie mating. Hardly had a days sickness in her life but in her later years she lost her hearing completely and her eyesight started to fail. She was only happy if she was right next to me. When she turned sixteen I worried about getting the time right. One day I got up and the little spark she'd always had wasn't there. The other dogs stayed at home while just the two of us went and sat on the grass at the park. It was a lovely peaceful Autumn day. Not much was said. Not much needed to be. An hour later she was at the Bridge. I’m thinking about you a lot today my little darling. I know that you had to go, but I wanted to keep you forever Can I go now? If you think the time is right I’d say goodbye to silent days, the dark and endless nights We’ve been so many places, together, you and me Now let me take that step beyond and set my spirit free I want to go, I really do It's difficult to stay But I am trying, just for you, to live for one more day To give you time to care for me, remember all the years Your heart is broken into two, I see it in your tears. Just hold me tightly one more time and let me hear you say, Because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today. Love from your Mom
  22. Pleased to report that the night went ok. Took him ages to settle. He kept coming and nuzzling me. I think he was feeling a bit strange and didn’t know quite what to do but he drifted off eventually. I got five hours sleep in the end but hopefully can grab a bit more later. He went a walk at the park this morning. Bless him, he was trying to do his usual sheepy dog stuff but was a bit wobbly and slow to get the ballie. The others took advantage of this just slightly!! (But I made sure he got some ballies). He didn’t eat all his breakfast today but didn’t do too bad. He’s still very restless and panting a lot. Still rubbing rescue remedy on his head. Haven’t got to go out today so I can keep a close eye on him. Houndwoman, I know what you mean about the ‘compromised immune system’. I work all my dogs in competition obedience. It’s very different from pet obedience and much more demanding physically on the dog. I have always gone to great lengths to make sure that the dogs I’m training are in peak condition physically and mentally with exercise, lots of fun and love and a good diet. I too wonder how something like this can happen to well looked after dogs when so many others are neglected and unaffected by this sort of thisng. Poor little Flo. I was thinking about her a lot last night.
