  1. I have lost two cats to the roads in years gone by and Basil cat (very much like your cat) had 3/4 of his intestine removed as he had peritonitis after a ?? car accident, he fractured his back leg so badly it was impossible to pin and plate so we had to keep him in an enclosed area until it began to heal. Good news was it did knit together, he got a bit of arthritis as he got old but lasted till he was 16!! I despair when driving about and see so much wildlife at the side of the road, the only badger I have seen is a dead badger at the side of the road, little rabbits, foxed, hedgehogs, pheasants, its horrible. I hope I never knock anything down. to you and family
  2. Porn dvd, where the heck did that come from!!!!!
  3. Will post the link on other forums I belong to, you never know!! I love em, would have them all but got two monster cats already.
  4. Your replies have given me some thought re the items in the garden, this morning about 6 am I could hear crows sqwarking on the chimney and flying round. Our next door neighbours like to barbeque so think that the crows are stealing bits from their garden that perhaps they have not moved after last barbie... well it makes sense in light of Joshs blood test results... Thanks for your help Avril
  5. Re posting here hoping someone can give me some help and advice Josh has his blood tests back now, its apparently Hepititis, he has a count of 300 as opposed to 100, vet says its not critical but bad enough. I have looked it up on internet and there are two types, chronic and acute. Dont know which he has yet until I see vet tomorrow. But all the sites are saying it is common in dogs that are not vaccinated, Josh is up to date with all his vacs so how come he has got this.... It says it is injested from and infected dogs faeces, urine or eye discharge. I can only think he has eaten grass that another infected dog has weed upon. He is bone thin at the moment and thats typical, I feel a bit peeved here because I took him back to vet and more or less had to insist on blood tests and pooh samples to be taken and analysed. He has dropped to 33 kilo from 45 kilo (ok he was a bit portly) Has anyone else had this with their dog, I am really worried about long term effects etc

  7. Poor little thing, it makes you feel so bad when you are trying your best and it just seems to get worse. My old dog used to get hot spots and they were really sore, eventually I used to bathe them in calomine lotion at the first sign of chewing, it cooled the area down a little. You are doing really well!
  8. Thank you all for your caring replies. I am waiting for Joshs blood test results back right now. The bone was a smallish leg bone, cooked and it was broken, there is a really sharp shard hanging off, I have bagged it and saved it just in case the results show anything suspicious. I dont think a fox could get in, we are surrounded by fences and a six foot gate, I used to have more than one shep so better safe than sorry. It may have been the lads next door throwing things about but funny that I found the bone this morning early on, and the candle later on after coming back from vets. weird. I am lucky that I have a gate and trellis type thingy halfway down garden so I can shut off the bottom part till it is checked. Will have a word with hubby tonight and then get him to casually bring it up in conversation I think. Dont want to start a war!
  9. Never thought of that, surely if that was the case they would let them pay by installments, better that if the home was good and like you say he is really old to be re homed..
  10. Last week I had to have Tinks the cat to vets, he was being sick with blood in it. This week Josh has once again got the runs for no known reason. This morning I found on the back lawn a lamb bone, cooked. We dont eat lamb. Now the cats were in last night so it wasnt them that dragged it from somewhere and bearing in mind we have 8 foot fences all around our garden. Anyway off to vets with Josh this morning for blood tests and to send the pooh samples off, got back and took him down garden for a play. There on the lawn was a citronella candle I am suspiciously wondering if they are being thrown over with the intent of causing damage to the dog and cats. I once had a bitch poisoned by a neighbour and am very cautious.. Now we get on well with our neighbour, live and let live, we have a dog and cats they have teenage sons - nuff said. But I am wondering whether to go round tonight or whether to leave it. I begin to wonder if there is stuff being thrown over that I havent seen, Josh is always routing about in the hedge and I just thought he was being horrid and looking for cat pooh, but maybe not
  11. I do love the oldies, lets hope Jayne can take him in or some other rescue can give him a chance of a new start, he doesnt deserve to be in kennels at his age bless him. The owners dont deserve him either. Poor owd lad, wish I could have him but Josh is dog aggressive.
  12. Thank you for your comments, I have got three pots of poo to take to the the vet with me tomorrow ( well I will have after tomorrow mornings offerings ) I am also going to ask if they will do the blood test for EPI, my old dog had this and he went very thin too. I think its time to attack the problem from all ends. Its a good idea to contact Burns, never thought of that. My vet said that Burns is often too rich for gsds even though it states on bag that it is good for dogs with EPI or sensitive tums. I will let you know the verdict when it arrives, it is worrying when dogs go thin isnt it, he was a bit of a pudding before all ths started.
  13. I am willing to homecheck for other rescues, I have a lot of knowledge of gsds having owned them all my life, but the basics of home checks must be the same. Gsd rescue do ask that the new owners have experience of gsds in the past, but we can sort the details out if and when a home check comes up. I can give you my home number etc if you pm me. Avril
  14. Dont know íf its any help here, I do home checks for gsd rescue in the Sheffield and Rotherham area. If it would help I dont mind doing oldies checks too. Every little helps
  15. My old boy was on enzymes for 6 years, the vet gave him human ones as they are cheaper than the animal ones. He did smell though, his head smelt like cat wee ( not putting to fine a point on it) and his breath was awful. But we got used to it, the plug in air freshners are a life saver!!! As he got older his coat was very dry and he began to go bald around his neck, his coat felt greasy there and was indeed very smelly. Perhaps its an individual thing... wish I had the smell back tho cos I miss him
  16. I am at my wits end with Josh, he started in Feb with explosive runs with a lot of blood in it. Vet prescribed antibiotics and anti inflammatories, then a diet of boiled rice. He was on Burns lamb and rice at the time. Gradually re introduced the burns and explosive bottoms again. Back to vet, repeat of previous treatments. Tried chappie as thats supposed to be good, loose stools and tummy rumblings with that one. I then changed to Barf feeding and it seemed to work, he has gone very thin however, after about 6 weeks of this diet he has started with the runs again. I have booked him in at the vet tomorrow (no temperature just the runs) I wonder about the super dog, I saw it in the pet shop and thought it was too cheap to be any good- but perhaps its worth a try, has anyone any other advice re this repeated problem Many thanks
  17. I went on a debt course a few years ago, one thing they said was not to let the bailiffs in if they call. Apparently anything they touch they can take away for payment of the debt. Citizens advice bureau is the best bet really for giving advice. Keep careful records of all correspondance and take names if you have telephone conversations. Good luck with this, I can imagine how stressful it is.
  18. you sound so sad (((())))))) a big hug. Do you feel this is depression, has it gone on for some time or is it just a bad day. If its depression do get some help, sometimes though chronic pain can get you down to rock bottom and it sounds like you deal daily with some amount of pain. I always find a walk somewhere beautiful lifts my spirits and the little furry faces we have think we are better than God, so you are never a failure. Some good advice given on here, but just be gentle and caring with yourself and ask your angels for help, they never let you down
  19. Hello Fenella, loads of good info on this site, I am new to the site too although old to dogs, but we all learn something every day with our animals. Good luck and let us know how you get on
  20. Ha Ha downloaded a picture of Josh and here is the link http://www.rykat.org/forums/uploads/120947...138_1255895.jpg
  21. Just reading back on this thread about whether seven days is enough for the owner to be found?? I wonder about this. Years ago I lost a gsd bitch, she escaped from kennels while we were on holiday. She was in a reputable kennel in the Derby area run by friends of ours. She actually bent the weld mesh gate and then went over the fencing that is bent over to prevent dogs climbing it.. We came home from holiday and scoured the area, our car had a sun roof and my son stood up and shouted through the sun roof in the hope she would hear us. We were lucky, she did and we kept getting reports of a gsd bitch running round the area. We put it on Radio Derby and the following day started again. Repeat of the previous day. Going home that night I was so sure we would never find her. We got a call late at night from the kennels saying someone had got her, she was exhausted and went to this couples house, they took her in and she was laying in front of the fire with their cats!!! The couple heard the advert on Radio Derby and phoned the kennels straight away Cant believe how lucky we were, but that took 3 day of constant searching and without the radio I dont think we would have got her back. Needless to say she was never kennelled again!
  22. I looked at the poundie thread as soon as I joined the group. I was heartbroken to see so many lovely dogs in such dire circumstances. People are doing such a wonderful job getting them into Rescues and the hope of a new home. I love all dogs, but my breed is the GSD so I was really hoping that Spike would make it through and he has, he is apparently going to Blue Cross kennels. I like most on here would like to help them all, but sometimes we have to do our own little bit and know it contributes to the whole. I do home checks for gsd rescue and fund raise when I can. If we spread the word it helps. Another thing is that the council pounds often need bedding, papers etc so locally some of us can help in that way, just dropping off piles of newspapers. I know our pound in Sheffield is always asking for bedding and apparently collars and leads also. Some wonderful people on a site I belong to also put aside time to go in and clean the pound kennels out and share a kind word with the dogs in there. Spreading the word about rescues needing homes is also helpful, posters in vets etc. I am sure you know all this but as a newbie I just thought I would mention it in case it hasnt been brought up before.
  23. Well done Ian, I know the gsd rescue kennels are full to bursting at the moment. He looks lovely, god love him, its very hard for older dogs in kennel situations, he is getting some home comforts now
  24. Thank you all for the lovely welcome, I am browsing through the boards and finding lots out! I will attempt to post a picture of the wonderful Joshua but it wont let me copy and paste--- help
  25. Hello all, my name is Avril and I live in Sheffield. My passion is GSDs and I have had them all my life (53 now) I have a picture of me in the pram being looked after by Gina, even though I cant remember her my mother loved her and spoke of her often. My first 'rescue' although the term was not used them was when I was about 8 years old. We had allotments and there was a market garden, they used a gsd or alsation as they were known to guard the market gardens. One night some youths broke in and hung the dog, they burnt him with cigarettes and left him for dead. Fang as I called him (after White Fang in the book)was rescued by some of the garden men and kept in a hut, he was violently aggressive but my dad a great animal man said to give him time. I used to sit on the step of the hut and sing to him. He did calm down. The breakthrough came when he was let out and played with me. He was then my constant companion. He was never shut up again, the garden men gave him a hut to sleep in and he went from allotment to allotment for food and love. I believe he had a good life. I have trained and shown gsds and done agility. At the moment I only have Josh, I lost Shadow in February of this year. Josh is a rescue as was his dad. I have done work for Shepherd rescue in the past doing home checks etc and have recently taken this on board again. As they say every little helps.
