Ten years ago I spent one year as the secretary for a local society (nothing to do with dogs or anyone on here).
Recently I Googled my name and was horrified to find that it came up with my home telephone number alongside it due to a couple of documents from this society which have been put on a website.
I immediately emailed and asked for my details to be removed but didn't get a reply. I emailed the host of the website and asked them to remove my details, mentioning the Data Protection Act - lo and behold I got a reply from the person I first emailed! He said that the documents had to be there as they have now registered as a charity and he is not sure that they can be changed. He also says that as I sent my details to be published in the events diary at the time which was 'a matter of public notice' this is not in breach of the DPA.
Does anyone know if this is correct? I really wouldn't have used it if I had know it would end up on the 'net but at time it wasn't an issue.
I have an vindictive and violent ex out there somewhere so having moved right away from the area he is in I have done my best to cover my tracks and keep any personal information off the 'net. I check Google every now and again so I know that this is relatively recent and have my fingers crossed that I will get away with it if I can get it removed soon. I don't want to change my phone number because there are some old friends who I haven't heard from for ages that have it and I want them to be able to get in touch with me if they feel like it. I'm also broke so can do without any expense.
I was talked into taking the secretaries role on to help the society out at the last minute even though I had only been a member for a couple of months. I wasn't too happy to find that I had to give out my phone number but did so as I thought that the ex was really not likely to see the events diary in question. I haven't explained this to the society as I can't say I got on with the people in the end, the attitude I am getting back over this is pretty typical of them to be honest. I fulfilled my year as I said I would do it and then left!
The Data Protection Act seems the best leverage I have to get something done about this. Sorry this is so long, I'm actually feeling quite panicked about this.
