  1. We are all very pleased to announce that our next auction will be held between 19th and 26th November and the beneficiary will be Tailends http://www/tailends.co.uk . I know many of you will know what a fantastic job Angela does with all the very elderly and mainly sighthounds in her care. Most of her “family” have never seen decent food or lodgings their entire lives before being homed with Angela. Because it is highly likely they received little or no veterinary care in their sad, neglected lives, Tailends sets about seeking appropriate medical attention for them and gently nurtures the dogs back to health and makes their last few months or years the happiest and most comfortable they have ever known. Please help us to provide Tailends with a worthwhile grant to ensure the beautiful hounds there continue to get all their essential veterinary care, food and creature comforts denied to them for so many years. How you can help What we need is items to auction. Anything that is in good condition will help. Anything you can donate, how ever big small or in between, will be gratefully accepted as long as it is in a good condition. Please send details of anything you can give, preferably with a photo, to me at [email protected] and please state if you need postage refunded. Please contact shops (both on and offline)you use and ask if they might kindly donate to this worthwhile cause. Let’s make this Christmas the best Tailends dogs have ever had.
  2. As with all greyhound rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing centres, the pressure of having to cope with thousands of retired greyhounds - annually - is constant. But behind the scenes of the fantastic work carried out by an army of volunteers are the stories of cruelty, rarely published, for fear the abusive owners or trainers will cease to ‘hand over’ or ‘give up’ any further unwanted dogs. Tia’s latest News page offers an insight into the distressing situations rescues are faced with every day and the frustration felt when forced to deal with a greyhound's abandonment, abuse, threatened or immanent destruction and even death itself. One of which was Emily Rose, a 4½ year girl, found dead and covered in fleas, having lost the will to live. She is listed on Tia’s Wall Of Shame, in her racing/gambling name - Pablos Jacqui – which now catalogues 777 greyhounds. Sadly, Emily Rose’s death may have been prevented, had the racing industry prosecuted her owner, a licensed trainer – Nick Bradshaw - under the Animal Welfare Act, for the cruelty he inflicted on his greyhounds throughout 2008. For his criminal abuse and neglect and in a court of law, Nick Bradshaw would have undoubtedly been banned from keeping animals. Although completely within their jurisdiction, the racing industry does not enforce the Animal Welfare Act but merely the Rules of Racing - affording owners and trainers protection from criminal prosecution - awarding lenient penalties and the freedom to continue to abuse, neglect and destroy healthy greyhounds, simply to supply the demands of the gambling industry's requirements for betting ‘units’. 5. We have virtual tickets available numbers 1 to 49. These numbers will be available to anyone at a cost of £10 per number. We will run the lottery for 10 weeks with fortnightly draws (that means there will be five draws). The prize for each lucky number will be a £20 cheque. So you will get 5 chances to win £20. We will use the bonus ball on the Saturday night lottery show as the winning number. Start date to be announced. We will guarantee £500 to Greyhound Gap for their kennel fund if all the numbers get taken, ie we will fund the prize money. 13. DOG owners have hit out at council proposals to keep dogs on leads at nearly 50 open spaces across Wey-mouth and Portland. Spokesperson, Bev Ogden, 37, has blasted proposed Dog Control Orders that would force her and fellow dog owners to exercise their pets on leads at areas including the designated dog area of Weymouth Beach. “This feels like ‘big brother’ telling us where we can and can’t walk our dogs. We feel the majority of dog owners are being penalised for a minority who have ‘problem dogs’. “These proposals will have a massive impact on dogs and their owners. Dogs are social animals and need to be exercised off the lead. “If you don’t let them off the lead, you create problems and make them ‘lead aggressive’,†said teaching assistant, Bev, who owns three dogs. But Councillor Ian James, Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s brief-holder for community safety, said the council had to represent the interests of all people. “We have got to look after the interests of everybody. “Although we are nation of dog lovers, there are some people who are petrified of dogs. Most dog owners are responsible people, but the sad fact is that there will always be a handful of irresponsible owners. We have to cover all occasions,†said Coun James. The community safety chief urged people to make their feelings known in an eight-week public consultation on proposals to replace local bylaws with Dog Control Orders. Owners could face on-the-spot fines of up to £80 if they fail to clean up after their dogs, or allow them on to land from which dogs are banned. Dogs would be kept from play parks, skateparks, bowling and putting greens, basketball and tennis courts, and all other recreation areas displaying ‘dog exclusion signs’, under the proposals. The fines would also apply to owners who fail to keep their dogs on leads in certain areas, even when ordered to do so by the dog warden. Public gardens, allotments, and recreation grounds, including the Rodwell Trail and all parts of Lodmoor Country Park, except for the dog exercise area, are among the areas at proposed under a ‘dogs on leads’ order. Owners who fail to pay within 14 days, persistent offenders, or those who fail to give their name and address to the dog warden, face a court appearance and fines of up to £1,000. Registered deaf, blind, or disabled people would not be subject to the orders, according to a council statement. Local people have until September 11 to have their say on the proposals, which can be found at www.weymouth.gov.uk. Councillors are expected to vote on the proposals early next year. http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/4510581.Dog_owners__anger_over_Weymouth_and_Portland_restrictions_plan/
  14. I'm so very sorry Wendy . Sleep tight sweetheart .
  15. I'd like to think that justice will be done but something tells me he'll just get a rap on the knuckles.
  16. Our Fin has it the entire length of his spine. We had no idea until he had a stroke in February 2008 and was xrayed. He manages to have a long walk in the morning with Molly and Izz and a shorter one later in the day. He is on Previcox and Seraquin daily. He's only just turned 6 and I know the day will come when we have to make a decision. For now though he still has a run or two a week and steals food from the cupboard if he gets half a chance and chases Izz to the door to greet visitors so we think he's happy and painfree for now. I hope your Cassie can still enjoy herself and be comfortable for as long as possible .
  17. As I understand it, these regulations only apply to greyhounds currently exploited for racing. I would assume any companion greyhound comes under the Welfare Act that is now law.
  18. Please personalise and send your views to DEFRA by 22nd July. http://www.sighthoundwelfaretrust.org.uk/f...showtopic=12561
