Cafferysmum
When I was around 14, I watched a documentary on channel 4 about how animals are killed for meat for the supermarkets.. and against parents wishes I became vegetarian but they wouldnt let me carry on with it.. Years have gone by and im not really a big meat eater..and esp after the meat at xmas was thrown away, i thought about it more.. but.. around 4am in the morning have been forcing myself to watch a programme called cook it, kill it, eat it.. in fact after many of the episodes i felt quite ill and began to question what meat i do eat etc.. So I have decided to go back to been a vegetarian, but I need a good cookbook or informative website as I have kidney probs and some foods are restrictive.. So wise fugeeees can you help please
BillyMalc
Woohoo, always happy to help! What foods would be bad for you? There are about a million and one websites and vegetarian cookbooks about, so narrowing it down a tad would help
Cafferysmum
althought i love currys.. my specialist doesnt like me to have it, or lots of caffeine or cheese as i also suffer from hemiplegic migraines and speech dhysphasia which means it mimicks a stroke and my speechs goes and can paralise.. only time people can get a word in edge ways... so just have to be careful i dont go full overboard.. murtle
Hope you don't mind me asking, but what is it particularly about currys that your specialist doesn't like you to have as there are a huge range of curries and ingredients in them? Cafferysmum
Think its the hot spices really in them.. you know like vindaloo the yummy ones... as it can affect kidney etc etc.. the mild stuff i could get away with but its not something i have really been into.. the hotter the better I already eat tons of american ranch salad and stuff like that, but what meat substitutes can you get etc.. murtle
Ah, will think on the curries. Meat susbtitutes, I like these ones. I don't eat quorn as most of them have milk in them. I also object to their monopoly http://www.beanieshealthfoods.co.uk/ Mxxx

BillyMalc
For ridiculously tasty meat substitutes look for Fry's in your health food shop - OMG their stuff is lush!! :D Okay, quick n easy, really yummy recipe that I made last night. Fed me and 2 dogs nicely: 1 inch ginger 2-3 cloves garlic tsp ground coriander tsp ground cumin 2 tins chickpeas tin chopped tomatoes bag fresh spinach lemon juice Fry ginger, garlic and spices for a couple of minutes, add chickpeas, stir for another minute, add tomatoes, lemon juice and a glug of water and let it cook on medium heat for about 15 minutes. Then add spinach and cook another 3 or so minutes until spinach is cooked. Presto! We had it with couscous, which I just made up and then stirred in at the end - was very nice
murtle
Billy the link I put is the UK importers of Frys products, just in case you ever struggle to find their products they are really helpful. I met them at a Vegan fair in Reading and really enjoyed talking to them.
Laura_E
Yay, well done you for making the decision to go vegie I am anaemic and people are always trying to lecture me about eating meat to get protein, but they don't seem to realise that I can get all the protein I need from things like nuts, pulses, tofu etc and actually feel a lot better than a lot of meat eating non-anaemics. I have a fantastic cookbook called La Dolce Vegan by Susan Kramer. I know you don't want to go vegan, but you can adapt the recipes if you want to add dairy. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dolce-Vegan-Livin-Made-Easy/dp/1551521873 The dishes are healthy, and most importantly yummy!!! Good luck

BillyMalc
Waterstone's and WHSmith will help you out, or even if you go to the cheap bookshops, they always have at least one veggie cookbook. If all that fails, Amazon is your new best friend!
Houndwoman
If you want convenient meat subsitutes(all vegan too) then take a look here http://www.redwoodfoods.co.uk/ They do home delivery too but you can buy their stuff in some of the larger supermarkets although they only stock a limited range but Holland and Barrett sell their stuff also.
