Mole Removal

Has anyone had a mole removed? I've got a mole on my face which sometimes is sore and bleeds a little. Last year I went to the doc's and he said it wasn't the type of mole to worry about but I could have it removed if I wanted.

It was fine for ages but recently has been sore again and bleeding so I've made an appointment to see the doc on Thursday. If he says I should have it removed, what's involved? Will it hurt?

I had a mole removed from my stomach, it was completely painless and healed without any problems at all. The consultant did it straight after the consultation and I'd be surprised if the whole thing took 10 minutes. I didn't need stitches but my mum who had two moles removed from her face a couple of years ago had a small stitch in each I think - they were very big moles though!

I've had a few removed, one on my face a few years ago, again like yours I was told it was nothing to worry about, but I asked for it to be removed as it was getting bigger each year and like your bleed and was sore sometimes, they just sliced it off, I have a tiny scar from it, but it can and might grow back. I've had skin tags that have been frozen, and also cut off and stitched. It really will depend on the type of mole and the best way to remove it.. None of mine have been painful when removed..

Moles are usually done at the sugery as minor ops but for facial ones they might be reluctant to do it there and may want you to go to hospital. They are sometimes reluctant as the scarring from the removal can be worse than the mole.My friend had a mole removed from her cleavage area and it's left her with quite a pronounced keloid scar :(

It is a minor procedure and done under local anaesthetic...that stings like bu*gery though when being injected but it is a very quick procedure but with the face they will take more care over the suturing I would have thought. They may even get a plastic surgeon to do it.I know for facial suturing in A&E we always used to get plastics down to do it.

I've had 6 moles removed - 1 burnt off by my GP, and 5 removed by a cosmetic surgeon.

Only one has come back, on my leg - apparently it was a different type to the rest and had a "root". It also bled a lot afterwards. I had one removed from my face. There is no scar, but in bright light I can see that the skin where it was is very slightly lighter. I don't think anyone else would notice though.

When the cuts were healing, I put gel plasters over them. The one on my face looked incredibly silly, but I think they helped the healing a lot.

Has your doctor referred you to a specialist?

If so, they will perform a biopsy on the actual mole to find out what it is. 99% of moles are benign, but if this one is changing appearance and is causing discomfort it's best whipped off. :)

Don't worry Wendbert, its fairly painless and quick. :flowers:

I had one on my face removed last year as it went a tad odd after my first trip to Sri Lanka ( it started itching a lot )

I went to the hospital and it was removed at the plastic suregy outpatients bit , it only took 10 minutes and Jules is spot on the flippin pain relief needles stung more than the procedure

I had to take Mark with me as they would not let me drive start afterwards ( I think some people might feel faint or maybe it was becasue of the pain relief) and i had to wear a plaster for a few days

it was fine and I would deffo do it again if needed

I've had one removed from my cheek by a plastic surgeon. The only discomfort was from the injections - just injection stinging. A couple of stitches and hardly anything to see after a few weeks - just a very faint scar. It's much better than the mole looked!

With mine it was tested after it was removed, I think it was as easy for them to remove it and test it as it would have been to take a biopsy

I have to say for a free service it was excellent and another good example of what a good service the NHS is on the whole. I think privately it costs 500 quid plus to have a mole removed and I doubt the level of care or service could have been any higher than I received

I haven't had any removed from my face, but had one about the size of a five pence piece taken off my shoulder, and a couple on my back. The injections to numb them did sting, but only briefly, and apart from a strange pulling sensation as she cut round the big one and then stitched it up, it was painless. You should be asking Sarah Jessica Parker, she's just had hers removed!

As others have said , the anaesthetic does sting and then it's numb. There is a risk of having a scar that looks worse than the mole does. One of my friends has a huge ugly scar on her knee. A Plastic surgeon would be the person likely to give the best looking result.

If the mole is not though to be cancerous you may have difficulty getting it removed on the NHS, I know when I last did dermatology all the cosmetic procedures including mole removal ( providing it was not thought to be skin cancer) had to be paid for privately but I think it depends on local policy.

If the mole is on your face, you would most certainly get it removed by the Plastic Surgeons. It takes no time at all, and the worst bit is the local anaesthetic, which stings a little like others have said. I've had 2 removed, and wouldn't hesitate to get more removed. As far as I'm concerned, it's 2 less to worry about, and a lot less painful and stressful than going to the dentist.
