Guest caseysmom
How I sympathise. My pup is fine on recall when there are no other distractions so if all other dogs are on leads in a training class she's obedient and recalls fine. I also practise in a large field with a horse lung line and again she's good at returning, occasionally a sniff at something but then continues to come to me for treat and praise. BUT if we meet another dog out walking no treats, squeaky toys, daft high pitched voice will make her return. I always have to reel her in. So if you find the magic way of achieving a good recall I'd love to know.
K9Fran
Hi Mrs B, no he isnt food oritentated at all, trust me, Ive tried! And toys - not interested either. How often is he fed? Or does he have food left down all the time?
cheryl33
he has breakfast in the morning, snacks and titbits to take the day care with him and a small meal in the evening.
K9Fran
he has breakfast in the morning, snacks and titbits to take the day care with him and a small meal in the evening. How long does he spend in day care? Do they do any training with him? Could it be that you have become the 'housekeeper' ?
cheryl33
how do you mean 'housekeeper'? He is in daycare from 8:30-5:45 Monday to Friday and yes they do training with him from the moment he gets there to the momet he leaves. Why? Paula
Dudley always waits until the 4th or 5th call too by which time I'm using my 'fish wife's' voice He does seem to know when I mean it on the first call though even if I think I'm using a nice reasonable tone. K9Fran
how do you mean 'housekeeper'? He is in daycare from 8:30-5:45 Monday to Friday and yes they do training with him from the moment he gets there to the momet he leaves. Why? OK - he gets excercise from you in the morning, maybe an hour tops? Then I assume you're spending time getting ready for work (breakfast etc.) Then he goes to daycare - where he plays with his friends, spends time with the carers etc for 9 and a quarter hours, then you come home/collect him, maybe walk him again - maybe another hour, then I would imagine you have your evening meal, chill out infront of the telly, prepare for the next day, do some housework, maybe socialise? He gets to see more of his daycare staff and spend more quality time with them than with you - and most of that time with you, he is not the centre of attention, so why should he care wether you are pleased with him or not? cheryl33
excuse me K9Fran but who the hell do you think you are?
DanishPastry
you asked for advise Cheryl, she is just trying to help you. By all means if you don't agree with some of her points, argue them, but do it respectfully and inteligently. I can see where she is coming from with her questions, and I don't mean that in a oh cheryl is terrible owner kind of way, but in a Henry gets most of his needs covered every day in day care because cheryl is a GREAT owner, who has her dogs interest at heart, kinda way. one.eyed.dog
Bit of an over reaction I think. As above she was trying to help. Not put you down
Paula
I read it as a put down too, she might not have meant it but it sounded like a 'get at the dog owner that works full time' post. I work full time, my dogs stay at my Dad's during the day the first thing that happens when I get home is a long walk or agility training (that's 3 times a week) my house looks like something Kim and Aggie would run away from, my dogs love me I'm sure because they show it in so many ways and Dudley still looks at me as if I'm mad when I recall him. Helly
actually fran has a very valid point about his day care people. I have 2 creche dogs who are really well behaved for the staff, walk well on the lead, respond to a short loud NO first time, and yet tit about relentlessly with the owners in similar situations. I think it is down to basic respect in both these cases. Obviously as much as we care about the dogs, and fuss them and walk them and feed them, we dont baby them like their owners do, who inadvertantly seem to hand the controls over to the dog rather than be seen to be in charge by the dog. I dont think fran was being offensive, or trying to upset you.. but merely point out henry has little respect for you at the moment and you need to take charge of that issue to improve his reliability with his recall
cheryl33
Di it has really upset me and Ellie, I'm surprised you think I've overrreacted, what with you being one of my closest 'doggy friends' and what my situation is. I asked for general advice, this woman has NO idea what I do in the mornings or evenings and to me its a criticism. Can this thread just be closed, I'll ask elsewhere for advice.
