you a daddys girl as well Jacky, not that I am you understand

Look at this: horses help troublesome teenagers . Sounds like a great project! Not quite the same, but when I worked in the riding school I taught one kid with ADHD, after 10-15 minutes he would say that "Mayflower is tired now and need to back in her stable" and as soon as he was in the car with his mum he would fall asleep! That is how much concentration it took for him.

Being a daddys girl is great isn't it? Mum rang last night, told me off for being sneaky and getting to him first!! She said she'd of made me pay half!! Then in the next breath she told me she'd paid for my plumber to come and service the boiler cos she knew I was skint!! Shameful 38 and still getting hand outs!!

Anyway that looks a brilliant scheme! I do think kids get a great deal from working with animals.

not good pics as it was my phone, will try and take camera one day. Just a short hack to avoid the main road, 1/2 a mile down we met a monster - aka a black pony in a woods, so Nookie had a wobbly and decided to spin in the road and try and trot full speed home, to conquer our monster fears I had to walk him past the black ponies field so that he could see it was just a pony - he walk up to the field bellowing and the little pony refused to answer which only convinced Nookers even more that it wasnt a pony  Hopefully we can get over our monster pony fear the next few times out

Bradders. Am interested in the pig oil and sulphur. Where do you get it and what do you do with it? Is the sulphur a powder you mix into the pig oil? Dexters owner has now said the evening primrose oil and royal jelly isnt working. His RH leg is very red and scabby. Bleeding in places. Having said that I turned him out last Friday and he hasnt left the field til I went up today. As he has done nothing for a week I lunged him while I waited for the temperature to rise and take the edge of any ideas of exuberance he might have been fostering. We had the best lungeing session I have ever managed (out of my 3 attempts so far) and he was actually listening to me. Had to lunge without the roller though as couldnt get the girth to meet!!!

Only a short hack as he was looking at every little thing. Both he and Nippy took exception to the black reels on a new electric fence as we rode through the estate. Also didnt like the new sheep fencing that had been put up since they last passed. Dont quite understand why something as innocuous as a fence would be a problem but then I dont think like a horse!!!

A bit down today. Laddie my oldie had lumps removed last Monday. He went ga ga for 36 hours after the anaesthetic, pacing constantly and crying. Results came back today as liposarcoma - a low grade cancer. There were good margins round the tumour so have got it all so thats a good thing.

edited to say Laddie is a dog not a horse!!!

Ooo Bobbysmum, best wishes for Laddie's recovery! :GroupHug:

The vet has been to Wanda again today and says she has only minimal soreness in her foot and should be ok by Wednesday so that's good news. If only I was sound as well things would be great, at the moment I can't walk never mind ride and am hoping for good stuff from the consultant on Monday. Wanda is very much on my mind at the moment as I am wondering if I will ever be able to ride again, I couldn't bear to part with her though!

Wanted : Right knee replacement, large size, new or used and a handy mechanic to pop it in for me!

 Poor you Glad that things are looking up for Wanda tho :)

That looks like lovely hacking territory Freya :) Hey - at least he only span for home and trotted - with either of mine it would have been flat out! :)

Poor Dexter - Rolo sympathises - vet came out on Thursday. She has injected him, but told me to shampoo him then apply this solution that she has made up herself - it contains Ivermectin amongst other things. This should get rid of the mites.

Pig oil and sulphur has not arrived yet, but will shampoo him again and apply that once it does - I would so like to be able to keep his feathers - if ever we do do a dressage test I think he would like quite eye catching if he was "traditional" (and less like a tank! :) )

Here's where I found out about it:

New Rider

My farrier has gone on about it before, so I am full of hope!

Hope Laddie feels better soon :GroupHug:

Bradders Thanks for the linky to Pig oil & sulphur thread. Do you know if it helps greasy heel? Not sure what it is but owner says Dexter has it. To me his heels dont have a problem although he does seem to be hot horse generally and his feathers are quite coarse. The scabby sore skin starts a bit further up and goes up to the next joint on his back legs and is behind his knees only on the front legs. Dont know if I will be able to persuade owner to try it.

Thanks for the best wishes for Laddie. Have never had a dog with cancer before although my dad died of a brain tumour and my mum has had breast cancer this year. His liposarcoma is derived from fat tissue. I need to ask the vet if he needs to have his other lipomas removed. Am hoping not as he had a bad reaction to the anaesthetic. Dont know whether to put him through it if he says yes. (Decided against removing them with last anaesthetic as we really didnt think they were a problem and he was already having 3 lumps taken off)

Rode Dexter in the school today. Was at bit of a loss what to do. So to give him something different I set up a barrel racing course but we only did it at a walk and trot. Dexter thought it was interesting and walked round with me while I was setting up and putting away. We also practised from our lesson and I managed to get him to drop his head so he had a vertical line down his face to the floor. Damned if I know what I did to achieve this though  Its what I am supposed to be doing but why it worked this time and not before I dont know. Is there any hope for me?

In the last few weeks I have been told by owner that 1 Dexter prefers to live out. 2 Dexter gets bored in the field and prefers human company. 3 Dexter gets bored in the stable. 4Dexter can live out all the time it wont do him any harm. 5 He usually stays out til after Xmas. 6 Perhaps I will start bringing him in next week.

I have been watching him and found that he doesnt like being turned out in the late afternoon. He stands by the gate and wont leave me to go to the other horses. He is eager to come in mid afternoon onwards. When the others go to check their horses he follows them back to the gate in the hope that he will get taken in by them or he is stood by the gate waiting for them. I really think he prefers to be in at night. He is bottom of the herd in the field and am sure he gets picked on. This may improve when bossy mare leaves soon and its just the geldings in the field.

Morning

Looks a beautiful place to hack Freya...and yes have to agree with Jen, Kane would of cantered home rather than trot so think that was rather restrained of Nookie!

Bobbysmum I use sudacrem on Kane's waxy bits on his legs, works better than anything else I've tried, and if it's not that bad it will soon clear up with just that. It's mess and leaves a yucky patch but if he's not being shown it's worth it.

Had a pretty awful weekend, saturday I didn't make it to the show with Lynn because one of the dogs got injured so had to go to the vets .Indy got a first in sports horse...(okay she was the only one in it!!) and 3rd in coloured so that was pretty good cos it was a big class! Anyway Kane's Evil brother returned, he was a handful on saturday not wanting to go out alone, and I had a major fight at the gate so ended up getting on and off 4 times on a 30 minute hack!!! Then Sunday had a friend and her little girl over, thought that as my neice had riden Kane recently then he'd be okay...NO such luck, I couldn't even get her near him! He was a prat! So I got on to try and cool him down...and he bolted across the field with me!!!!! Then took him out of the farm to try and meet up with Lynn and Helen, had to fight him out of the drive ...that was being led not ridden! And once we met up I go on...and he tried to bolt away from them!!!

This morning I had to trek to find him, we've moved them into the winter grazing so 5 horses on 20 acres!!!! Apparently they spent all night in the pouring rain standing near the mare and foal in the ajoining field!!

Bobbysmum There is always hope  (or else I am doomed  )

Norty Kane!!

Karins twatty brother really is a twatty git. One of their horses is clipped, so now wear 3, yes 3 rugs when turned out. What are they gonna do when it gets cold? It's not even freezing these days  ffs some people just have no clue.

Hope all goes well at the specialist today Pendlewitch :flowers: Glad to hear Wanda is feeling better.

Looks lovely hacking Freya, those ickle ears looking for horse eating tigers on the way

Sounds like things are as  as ever in Dexter land! Hope Laddie is feeling better, and has a full recovery :flowers:

Oh no Jacky sounds like you have had a hairaising weekend  Norty Kane, I would love to know what goes on in their heads sometimes

Sounds like Indy was a good girl

I am having a bit of a time of it with Loki at the moment. For the last two weeks he has been neurotic, whether it be ridden, lunged or in day to day things. I stopped riding him last week in case it was the saddle, as have had so much trouble getting saddler back out to check it, finally found a lady who is booked to come out on Saturday.

Get him out of his stable at the weekend and he is hopping lame behind, doesn't want to use that hind leg at all, walk him around the yard and it eases, so walk him around the school to see if that helps, he progresses to slightly unlevel in walk. Because of this decide to put him out, he comes in no worse, but still lame when trotted up. This morning he comes out hopping lame again.

The lovely vets I found have decided they now won't come out as far as WEC, it hasn't moved as far as I know

So now I am stuck, our big local vet practise is a bit hit & miss, I don't know any of the vets there well enough to trust them, but they can always come out straight away, I have called the vet that I used ages ago for a second opinion when his stomach was bad, he is a one man band, very old school, but been around for ages and I do trust him, but you have to wait a bit longer for him to come out. I have left it that he will come out on Wednesday, hope he will be ok to be left until then

I am at that point that I guess most horse owners get to now and again where I feel like I am in a big black hole

That made me laugh so much.

Pendlewitch. Hope all goes well with your visit to specialist and they get you sorted really quickly.

Claire. Hope Loki is just playing for the sympathy vote and its nothing too serious.

Was at a loose end what to do with Dexter yesterday. He had a big flap of frog yesterday. Didnt know if that was a problem or not and was on my own up there so no one to ask. (Only OH with me with his camera and he knows nothing about horses) Could get the hoof pick under it but it didnt seem to bother him and he wasnt lame so I used him anyway. He has got a small cut under his eye too. Probably stuck his head in the hedge after some tasty morsel.

I lunged him in the school. Wondered about doing something to make it more interesting so we did this. He got a bit excited after a while so we had to stop and go back to basics

IMGP8367.jpg

Sorry its a bit yellow. Its the lights from the school. The building behind is the end of Dexters stable block so we dont have far to go to get to the school in the rain LOL

Anyway left Dexter in last night as was unsure about foot. He seemed very pleased and contented with that decision. Especially as had found him huddled against the hedge as the others wouldnt let him in the field shelter.

Wow brill picture!!! He's certainly not lost his belly yet  . I wouldn't worry too much about the frog, it's normal for it to shed. I ( again...it's my favourite thing!!) rub sudacrem into Kane's frogs as he suffers from thrush and if he has flaps I just rub some under it to stop the thrush getting in.

Super picture Bobbysmum, He is a big lad isn't he!

Interesting day with the consultant, after waiting hours got to see the same bloke as when I had the scan for possible DVT, because the steroid injection worked so well last time he seemed to favour repeating it. I wasn't going for that because it only worked for two days before the pain came back so made the point that I don't give a toss what they do just stop the bloody pain and for more that two days! He then trotted off to look at the xrays from last time and came back with his chief who I know very well and who knows my knee very well. Outcome is MRI scan asap and probably a new knee PDQ unless the scan shows up an alien has taken up residence there! Got even more pills, I'm so glad I don't have to pay for them anymore, I would be totally broke! So will see how I do with them, I haven't been pain free for over a fortnight.

Then had a strange conversation with the OH, he said: 'which niece does your consultant know?' 'Err, wot', says I, 'you said he knew your niece' says OH, 'which one?', 'My knees, you plonker, my knees, not me bloody niece'! MEN!

:biglaugh:

Clare, how's the thumb?
