A big thank you to everyone who attended our recent events to mark Greyhound Remembrance Weekend. :flowers:

On Saturday 22nd July we handed out leaflets to people entering the Swindon Greyhound Stadium & many people were shocked at the terrible cruelty endured by thousands of dogs.

On Sunday 23rd July we held a Greyhound Gathering & Dog's picnic in Bristol's Eastville Park.

Around 100 people and many lovely dogs attended the event and a minutes silence was held for all the dogs who have suffered and died over the years.

£269.47 was raised for Avon & Somerset Greyhound Action from the sale of cakes, books, raffle tickets & donations.

There was an article mentioning Jilly Cooper's rescued greyhound & the weekends events in the Western Daily Press newspaper on Monday 24th July.

Today's Western Daily Press mentions the neglect of greyhounds in the following article: http://tinyurl.com/nj4cr

Please send letters to the Western Daily Press http://tinyurl.com/h5dsm

and Bristol Evening Post http://tinyurl.com/cu48d mentioning the recent expose of the mass slaughter of greyhounds in Co Durham and the recent greyhound picnic in Bristol.

We need to keep this issue in the local press.

A press photographer took lots of photos of the picnic and the papers might use them if we get some letters sent in.

Letters don't have to be long - just a few paragraphs will do. You could even cut n paste something that you have already sent to your local paper or MP.

Thank you.

Thank you. :flowers: These letter really do make a difference! Just a few paragraphs can make people think about the issue and maybe decide to never go greyhound racing.

This is my letter to Bristol Evening Post & Western Daily Press (altered slightly for the Post) :flowers:

Dear Sir,

I was pleased to read the story of Jilly Cooper's rescued greyhound "Feather" (W.D.P. Monday 24th July). Jilly's dog is one of the "lucky ones", rescued by an animal charity who found him terrified and near death. At least he now has a lovely home. Many are not so lucky.

Last week an undercover investigation revealed the mass slaughter of 10,000 ex racing greyhounds by a man in County Durham.

And yesterday the RSPCA revealed that cruelty figures for the West are rising.

In June 2005, a former greyhound trainer, was banned for life from keeping animals and given a suspended prison sentence after neglecting his three dogs.

The RSPCA found the dogs in a terrible state lying in their own mess in dirty run down stables. How many more greyhounds are suffering across the west country we will never know as the industry is left to police itself.

We are calling on the public to boycott dog tracks & never bet on greyhound racing.

A free information pack is available from Avon & Somerset Greyhound Action, Box 53, 82 Colston St, Bristol, BS1 5BB or visit www.greyhoundaction.org.uk
