  1. Happy belated birthday Beenzie So sorry, so wrapped up in my own woes, I completely missed this thread
  2. Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Bobby is getting around (in his normal wobbly fashion) but I may look into hydrotherapy treatment for him. Unfortunately the local pool has closed and I need to work out how feasible it is to get him for regular treatment at a pool further away bearing in mind my own work commitments. Someone on another forum has also mentioned 'Bowen Treatment' which I may also investigate. As far as wheels go, I'm afraid it's just not something I could contemplate for one of my own dogs. I'm more than happy for others to use them but, for one thing I think it would be a nightmare for him here with another 11 dogs milling around - and I don't think it would be good prolonging his life that way. That's just my opinion about my own dogs - I have no issue at all with others using them Bobby is just very wobbly at the moment - not incontinent in anyway so I'm hoping that he's got months, if not a year still but I'll take it all day by day, week by week. Gemma, on the other hand, is bright as a button and if it weren't for me staring at the scan and seeing what the vet was talking about, I wouldn't have believed him I'm hopeful that either what he saw wasn't as sinister as he thought or that she's always had whatever it is and there's not a problem I'll let you know later on Wednesday. Thanks again for all your positive thoughts - I'm sure they will be helping my little ones.
  3. I'm so pleased that she is safe . It's amazing how people work together for such a fantastic result
  4. I've only just seen this too Oh Cheryl, how horrible for you, Georgia and all your girls. I'm so glad that it was nothing worse than concussion but I can't imagine how frightening it must have been for you all. and so glad that Georgia is so much better now.
  5. I just seem to be going through a bit of 'patch' with some of my lovely collies. Bobby who is a lovely sable boy (never shown) and is now 9 years old, suddenly deteriorated in his movement in the rear legs. He's been to the vet. I thought they'd say it was a hip problem. Very sadly it's a neurological problem with a vertrabra pressing on his spinal cord. He is so wobbly, there's no cure and it's just so sad. He's deteriorating much faster than I'd wish too Today I took Gemma to the vet to have her scanned for pups. The vet can't see any pups which is fine but he thinks she has a problem - either with one of her kidneys or an ovary. She's back for more tests on Wednesday. Gemma owes me nothing - she has won showing and has been a fab girl, producing a lovely litter a couple of years ago and starting agility this year. She really is one of those dogs of a lifetime. Please, if you've got any positive thoughts to spare, wish them both well
  6. Great pics and looks like you had a lot of fun
  7. I am smitten with both your lovely horses So lovely to see them together. I'm sure they'll be the best of friends
  8. Yay! I tried to ring you tonight Kaos and when I heard you weren't in, I just KNEW you'd be round cuddling Muppet
  9. Be careful Dee, he'll think he's Mr Medallion Man
  10. THUD He's totally gorgeous and I'm so glad he's home with you at last (PS. Khan came 2nd today )
  11. My o/h is pretty good at golf (or used to be when he was younger) and tbh it's a healthy outdoor sport so I always encouraged it. Anyway, when you've got a horse, if your o/h isn't 'horsey', you need them to have a hobby which takes them out of the house for 4 hours plus otherwise they notice that you disappear to ride your horse for a huge part of the day I've done a bit of caddying for my o/h in my time and it is quite good fun, plus I love any sport where we stand a chance of beating the opposition
  12. You and your family will be in our thoughts. Good luck with everything
  13. How would they know? They could well be! They accept donations from anyone! (even people like me ).
  14. Why are you asking questions about profits? Why don't you just look them up?
  15. Actually (and I'm not trying to be awkward) but the KC is a non-profit making organisation according to their charter so apart from whatever the admin costs are, they do give very large donations to the Animal Health Trust, RSPCA etc. etc. I think if you're asking them to screen bad breeders, that's another thing - maybe they should divert their funds for that purpose. Their Accredited Breeder scheme does go some way to help though admittedly not far enough. It means they need to have people on the ground to visit every breeder who registers for the scheme which isn't a cheap exercise and even the RSPCA (with their vast donations) struggle to have enough animal inspectors on the ground so not sure how feasible that is. I agree that breeders generally think the KC just takes money and doesn't give much back but they really don't need government legislation (almost certainly more money!) to help. Governments rarely add value to a problem - they just increase costs. No responsible breeder makes money from a litter. I believe this discussion is one that we are unlikely to agree on (although I am interested in the health and future welfare of ALL pedigree dogs) purely because some of us are inclined to believe a very biased and edited programme which the KC co-operated with and then saw all their sensible attitudes on the cutting room floor - and statements from the KC which some of those who believe the programme find defensive and incredible (and I use that word in it's literal sense). It's just a question of who you believe and who you don't. For example, do you believe every complaint shown on Watchdog? Have you ever worked for a company featured on Watchdog and thought 'well, that's not quite true', even though other bits might be true? Same thing. Don't trust the media, especially sensationalist press. They have their own agenda and it's usually to do with their own profits I'm not asking you to take the KC press statements as true either. Just look at them with a sense of balance. Sorry Reds - this isn't all aimed at you - it's just I quoted you at the start and then I sort of continued
  16. In support of someone's post, possibly SB's, the reason we've got puppy farming is due to excessive legislation - farmers were told to diversify by ?? DEFRA I believe. Sometimes too much legislation is a bad thing. Now it's started, it seems no-one can stop it. In some ways, rescue is helping it by rehoming dogs that puppy farmers can't themselves sell. I've not got a sensible answer for that one so I won't try. I thought breed standards were set by the relevant breed societies and just endorsed by the Kennel Club? All of them are open to massive interpretation and that's why there are such huge diversities in the various breeds and also why judging is so subjective. Sorry, neither point is particularly relevant to the original topic.
  17. I'm not aware I've said it's ok in either case? In fact, I'm on record as having stated that people who destroy perfectly healthy puppies are far from ok. However, my comment is that the RSPCA DO destroy healthy puppies too, even if they don't do it at your local branch.
  18. Hope Joe is feeling lots better very soon

    Sam

Brilliant news - well done Sam
  20. In its usual manner, the RSPCA is showing its hypocritical self. On the one hand, it condemns breeders putting a healthy puppy to sleep yet it puts hundreds (possibly thousands) of healthy dogs - including puppies - to sleep each year. I know of instances where terminally sick, old animals have been 'saved' to gain publicity while a healthy puppy with a minor injury (i.e. a normally broken leg) has been destroyed on the basis that they don't have the funds to save both. On the one hand it has recently accepted a £48,000 donation from the Kennel Club for the welfare of dogs yet it sees fit to publicise a decision to withdraw from activities associated with the Kennel Club. Nothing much changes then I have a lot of time for the RSPCA at branch level but RSPCA HQ is inconsistent and generally extremely wasteful of money donated by honest members of the public (or so it would appear). I agree with SB. I think the RSPCA could present a better case by educating the public (at the various shows etc) but if they choose not to attend Discover Dogs and Crufts then so be it. I doubt that many people will notice anyway, other than via press coverage because I truthfully cannot remember seeing an RSPCA stand at either of the main shows in previous years. Who knows what the Dogs Trust will do but I would respect their decision because at least they are asking their supporters.
  21. How very, very sad Wendy I am just so sorry for your loss I don't have the words to express my sadness for you but the decision you made was the right one and made out of love, to give Dolly a new life. Sleep tight Dolly , knowing you were truly loved.
