"Local services across England are coming under huge strain as a result of unprecedented levels of immigration, council chiefs said yesterday. They accused the Government of failing to take account of the massive influx of migrant workers, especially from eastern Europe, in their financial settlement for local government. Councils say there are not enough houses for the extra workers. Public services, including transport, schools and hospitals, are finding it hard to cope with the additional numbers. Yet official figures are under-estimating the scale of the migration. The alarm was sounded yesterday by Cheryl Coppell, the chief executive of Slough borough council, Berks. Thousands of workers from the EU accession states have descended on the town, which has high employment levels. Over the past 18 months, about 9,000 new National Insurance numbers have been issued in Slough, of which just 150 went to British nationals. Yet, in 2004, the Office for National Statistics recorded only 300 international migrants settling in the area. Ms Coppell said the arrival of thousands of migrants was hitting the employment prospects of people already living there and had led to overcrowding problems, with as many as 15 migrant workers in a single house." I was there from about 11.30 to 2.30. It was nice to meet Karen at the hearing dogs stand and Saskia and Ang at the DNB. I saw mary ray in the ring, Joe Ingliss at his stall and Teija in the companion best rescue but couldn't stay to see if she won. There was so much to see and some things were on at the same time so I was rushing around and was knackered by 2,30 and had to go home Ali

Good post. I only know what I've read in the press and I don't know what the correct facts are but I keep reading different accounts. I think they were wrong to leave their children and the agony and the guilt they feel must be unbearable. They need to keep up press interest so that Maddie is in people's minds and keep the chance of her being found alive.going. I don't blame them for doing this. I agree that if this happened to a family of a different class or one parent family the press would be more hostile and suspicious. Alison

I can remember when people were allowed to smoke in places like McDonalds! I don't smoke now but used to. I dont think people should be allowed to smoke in work places but I don't see what's wrong with having a seperate indoor area where people can smoke in pubs . Alison

Does life get any more ludicrous?
