  1. Just popping in to let people know that I have just taken on the role of Regional Coordinator on the Isle of Wight - and will soon be distributing posters and doing all I can to promote The Oldies Club here on the Garden Isle! If anyone who lives, works or visits the Island has any suggestions for places I can put up posters, knows of any businesses that might consider hosting a meet and greet, or knows of any events taking place that involve dogs/pets - please get in touch Thanks
  2. There is a mobile number given on our local Freecycle listings - I have texted them the details of the closest Boxer Rescue and suggested that they neuter the dog if not already done. None of the local rescues have any space What else can I suggest? Everyone I know who might be able to take him on are full to the rafters; so many dogs needing homes
  3. What is to stop dog thieves registering with this service, and then when they get a text, making their way to the area that a lost dog was last seen, in order to look for, find, and steal the dog? As a scheme, it has potential - but at present, it seems a bit too open to abuse for my liking; I wouldn't want to give a dog thief directions
  4. I've just discovered Ann Rule - I got some of her books through Freecycle, and stayed awake until the early hours lat night; I couldn't put it down
  5. I can't vote in the polls Do I have to be a member for a certain length of time before I can vote?
  6. They are very pretty - probably not talked about too much in the show world, though I have to say that since the Dogs Trust referred to a NSDTR as a collie-x (on national TV, no less!), my expectation of breed recognition by rescues has dropped somewhat
  7. Yes, it is on page 11 of the policy document you linked to It is the only policy I have seen that specifies vaccination each year. My vet won't vaccinate my dogs for all the the conditions AXA require each year, as he would be breaching the License of the vaccination if he did, so AXA is not for me
  8. There is a HUGE difference between M & S and AXA - and it is why I will never change to AXA. The M & S policy states that they will not pay "any claims that result from any illness that your pet should have been vaccinated against. For dogs, vaccinations should be for distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus." Compare that to the wording in the Axa policy: You must comply with the following conditions to have the full protection of Your Policy. If You do not comply We may at Our option cancel the Policy or refuse to deal with Your claim or reduce the amount of any claim payment. - You must ensure that Your Pet is vaccinated each year against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus They may look the veryt similar, but there are two key differences. One is that the entire AXA policy could be invalidated if you chose not to have your dogs vacciantd (even on veterinary advice). Secondly, my vet (like an increasing number nationally), follow a three yearly vaccination schedule.....which again, means that they qwould not be covered by the insurance, even though they have been vaccinated to the schedule that the vaccine is licensed for! Axa may look like a good deal - but if you try and make a claim, you may find yourself battling
  9. I've done this with a few BYB in the past....ones who churn out a couple of cross-breed litters a year, cos they own a random dog and bitch I'd always assumed that the bigger, licensed breeders would be registered with IR anyway......
  10. I'm having e-mail conversations with a number of Wandsworth Councillors about this; Cllr Lister still doesn't seem to understand the point I am making which is that there won't be any "pit bull types" to license as they are currently illegal! I have asked him to confirm what he means by the phrases "......more menacing dogs........" and "......pit bull type dogs and others not currently classified under the Dangerous Dogs Act........' and asked him whether he has considered campaigning for a sufficiently resourced and enforced dog license scheme which is equally applicable to all dogs
  11. I'm not sure I can see the difference between classified adverts and auction websites really; it was inevitable that someone would set up an animal auction site, because e-bay don't allow animals to be listed on it's uk site. I doubt the Kennel Club has any regulations that would address this - kennel club registered puppies are advertised on the internet every single day, and this is no different, is it?
  12. It strikes me that they are damned if they do, and damned if they don't Good on them for asking - at least if they have to go away without their pup at short notice (such as the family funeral that took us away from home when our pup was young), then they will have visited and checked out kennels so will know the score
  13. What's wrong with kennels? I use them regularly; I have no alternative emergency care arrangements and therefore I ensure that my dogs are familiar with the environment by using them for the odd weekend and longer holidays too (my pups first overnight stay was as 8 months old). It seems very responsible to be asking about kennels in advance of needing them

  15. I was thinking the same thing when I read the OP - we made arrangements and did our research We got a dog because we wanted a motivation to change or lifestyle - I wanted to go walking but couldn't motivate myself alone, I needed a dog to keep my company What I didn't expect was to lose over a stone in the first 6 weeks of having a puppy, just through the additional exercise I was getting getting up and down off the sofa and playing in the garden in the evenings instead of sitting on my butt all the time I hope that this pup has a great life ahead of him
  16. I know I've come into the debate late - but I do have one concern over the proposal for a compulsory training element to dog ownership and that is the fact that there are so many different training methods out there; who decides what the proposed compulsory training should consist of? There are very wel known and highly thought of trainers who use methods that make me shudder - how many people would be happy to pay to attend compulsory classes that apply techniques and methods that we do not agree with, or do not suit our dog? one size definitely does not fit all - but there would have to be a "standard" that any compulsory training was delivered within....who will set that standard? (when you consider which internationally renowned trainer is believed by the public to have most experience with fighting breeds, I suspect there would be an expectation from joe-public and many politicians that the "standard" would reflect his methods - imo, that would be a disaster )
  17. The parent company that make Pedigree dog foods test their products on caged animals.......
  18. This is the Pedigree campaign, isn't it? http://www.uk.pedigree.com/adopt/ I admit I am having a personal ethical struggle with this one - it is great that rescues are being supported, but the money is being raised through the sale of pet food products that are manufactured/tested using methods that I don't personally agree with
  19. I wrote to all Wandsworth Councillors in repsonse to this incredibly misguided statement from their leader. One has replied - he sent me a link to the document that was debated by Council and led to the statement being made last week: http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/moderngov/Pub...810.docA.ps.pdf I admit that it has worried me a little; if Wandsworth take the lead and other Councils in London and around the country follow suit and put pressure on the government, then it is quite possible that a Licensing scheme of some form could be implemented as a "vote winner" before the next election It is likely to be poorly thought out and have limited consultation - which will probably lead to the same loopholes and enforcement issues that there are with current legislation
  20. Hi! I think know a lot of Refuge members from other forums - I live in Southern England with my family and my two dogs. I take part on agililty, and also do long distance hiking with my dogs for company Looking forward to chatting with you all - my username (NP for short) is an anagram of my favourite breed
