  1. Not the easiest dog in the world to train, our Jet! Lovely dog, no vices, but thick as pig muck! He has been a lesson in how to break down anything into the tiniest increments for him to "get" it I'm still impressed with him - he got extra rations tonight too!
  2. K9Fran has it - they give you "too much money" and then want it back... but their cheque doesn't actually clear... and now they have your bank details too...
  3. I cannot believe it - if I didn't have it on video, I'd swear it was a dream! I have had Jet for 2.5 years... and have been trying SOOO hard to get him to focus, stay with me and LEARN... frustrating isn't half of it! And now, I've got him weaving 6 poles! *does the happy dance* I've used the same techniques as my last two dogs, but these didn't work... I've tried channel weaves, weave-o-matic and finally! someone suggested the 2 x 2 method. Not sure I did it exactly how she teaches (as I've had to steal other people's videos from YouTube for info), but anyway - we have WEAVING!!!!! Week 1 Week 2 Week 5 and then because he was doing so well... Tonight, I've had the six poles all together... although wierdly, he's still better one way than the other Dogs and their inability to generalise! Anyway, enough of my ramblings... I is very, very proud
  4. Thanks for that chicky! No printable version sadly, but I'll cut and paste...
  5. ok... I need your help. Can you point me to info that I can print out and leave with the neighbour who owns a beautiful chocolate lab. She is currently on heat and they will not spay her until she's had a litter because that's what you do. Apparently. *in disbelief that people still think this way*. I need literature from reputable sources that explains why this is a bad idea and what happens When Whelping Goes Bad. TIA!
  6. Click to Calm is my favourite book atm - using it now in fact! Written by Emma Parsons and inspired by Karen Prior
  7. It took me a moment to get that... it's been so long since I went shopping in England... *sighs whistfully for Wilkinsons and Tescos!*
  8. Hee hee, in fact, I'm soooo far away, it took me nearly a year to get to this thread!
  9. Try dogstardaily for hints on pet dog training. http://www.dogstardaily.com/training/home-alone should help a little.
  10. OK, body language experts... if you look at the Prince, you'll notice he has a rifle under his arm and his hand is tucked in. If he were to be seriously laying into the dogs with intent to hit them, wouldn't he have given the gun over? It really does seem to me that all he's doing is making a lot of fluster to separate the two dogs scrapping over a bird (which is very naughty gun dog behaviour). Unfortunately, he chose to use a big stick to do that, but I'm still not convinced that the stick made any connection. Same as this guy isn't holding the sun...

    Flygility

This is video shot at the Kapiti Flygility Tournament near Wellington, New Zealand. There are only a handful of dogs competing in flygility and it is common for handlers to come up against themselves in heats if they have two or more dogs in the same competition. At this tournament, the open, intermediate and advanced finals were all battles between Rebecca Sidwell's two dogs Seeka and Mya. It was pretty amazing to see her handling both dogs at the same time - Mya was left by herself at the start, but knew to wait until the go command.
  12. I wish Raven wasn't so frightened of dogs. So frightened in fact, that if one makes eye contact with her, she'll fly off the handle and agress at that dog. :-(
  13. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? I'm not denying that hitting your dog with a big stick is a bad thing to do, but come on! Would anyone like to be accused of something you didn't do? I surely wouldn't! When I think of the times I shove my dogs about when we're playing together - imagine if that were misinterpreted by someone who doesn't play as rough as me with their dogs The photos imply - they don't prove. FWIW I feel more sorry for the shot pheasant than for the dogs!
  14. He seems to be fine - no recurrance of lumps or bumps yet. They monitor him for five years, so we're not out the woods just yet. He's back at work and cantankerous as ever, so I keep telling him there's nothing wrong with him!
  15. You know, I can actually join this thread! Here's my hubby after his lymph node removal surgery... he had staples too... 24 or so I think The red on his face is the radiation field - he's now left with an area that he never needs to shave :-) one bright side eh?
  16. It really doesn't look like he's hit the dogs at all - that reporting is terribly biased "appears" "allegedly" et al This photo did make me chuckle though If you look to the right, you'll see the naughty dog has got the bird again... LOL Prince too busy chasing the other dog to notice

  19. OK, first off I would say that her bite inhibition is fabulous, because although the mouth is open and the teeth are showing, she's not causing any damage. However, she is obviously distressed at meeting other dogs and is trying to chase them off. Try getting Control Unleashed by Leslie McDevitt http://www.controlunleashed.net/ lots and lots of exercises for frightened dogs. Good luck - it's not an easy problem to solve.
  20. Just a few photos of Raven, my GSD x Huntaway mix that was rescued by the German Shepherd Rescue Trust from the blue juice at Manukau Pound. She's 37kg of pure bounce and idiotic to boot! http://www.flickr.com/photos/kwozzie_nz/28...57603222826593/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/kwozzie_nz/28...57603222826593/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/kwozzie_nz/28...57603222826593/ These photos were taken at ACAC's ribbon trial two weekends ago. Raven came 2nd out of a field of around 50-60 dogs, the only maxi dog in the line up! All the rest were minis She was beaten to 2nd by 100th of a second... damn those electronic timers!!
  21. So what happened this week then? We had no-one come to our Open Home (sob), but the weather has just been so gosh darn awful, it's not surprising really. We have the woodburner going (no central heating here!), and the electric heaters. Plus Willow has decided her place is on my lap, so provided I'm sitting, my legs will be warm I'm trying, trying, trying to get Tui to present with the dumbell, but no success. She's so soft, she crumples when you try to presssure her... having a little positive with using other toys that aren't the dumbell and have managed to get her to drop a fluffy bone on my knee. Anyone else having training issues?
  22. Ah yes, although Wanganui is further south, it is actually drier than Auckland, which seems to have showers every 5 minutes I've already visited the local dog club and met with some ladies who do not only club obedience class training, but also private tuition, so hoping to get in there And we'll have a bigger, flatter section! Yay!
  23. Tui is getting slow... oh, it's just so sad. This poor little dog never deserved the ill health that she suffers from. Her ears are still troubling her, although a raw diet has helped to control the worst of it. She is now suffering from a problem that stops her heart rate from increasing when she is active. As a result, her blood doesn't get the extra oxygen it needs and she becomes fatigued very quickly. She can only do one agility run now, so she's semi-retired. I am trying to get her title from ADX to ADX Gold - just six clear rounds should do it :-) then I'll retire her from it. She still enjoys flygility, but because her speeds are down, she only gets the one run there. Still she has impressive qualifications nonetheless - she is Tui FD ADX CGC(Gold) - not bad for an illbred mongrel
  24. Oh, here's someone you probably don't know.... Luna She was in the local pound a year ago and suffering from weeping bald patches and swollen feet (you can see in the photo that her left foot is bigger than her right) - turned out to be stress related. She is a Black Tipped British Shorthair - and she's adorable. I have clicker trained her to high five and to "stick 'em up" where she sits on her back legs with her front legs in a "don't shoot" pose. She's a real honey and a delight.
  25. You've no idea! I'm completely flumoxed by this dog... I can get SIT, DOWN, RECALL and not a lot else! I've tried to train him in flygility, but his overwhelming need for the ball overides any learning it's more like an obsession than a drive. In agility, he's so focused on finding the ball, he jumps through hurdles... he just doesn't get it! In the UK sense of the word, I suppose so - we're about 10 miles away. In the NZ sense, no, we're nowhere near LOL
